I'd just like to take this opportunity to laugh at anyone who defended Sony throughout this entire debockle. Bribes don't sound too far fetched now do they?

As to any one still defending them.

The exit from the Free World is just over there.

Please take it. Because you don't belong here.
'cos this is where the massive hyperboles belong.

Seriously, what the hell is that? Oh no they have some Ip's they now know every single move you make and all about all your stashes of porn!

I would rather have fun games of multi player and not be pissed off by the hackers then have some daft illusion of privacy.
It's nothing to do with privacy.

It's the fact that they now have a basis for banning IP's from PSN.

So. Visit a site we don't like. You can't use our service anymore.

How much longer until that's just another tool large companies use to get their way?
Correct me if I am wrong 'cos thats what I have been hearing from verious places but this geo guy doesn't seem to be interested in hacking but his "work" allows people to do so ... which basically means he opened the flood gates.

Yeah, still don't actually care. I am not computer savvy enough to know how to hack with anything short of a step by step guide.

And potentially your email address and/or other potentially identifying data.
I'll send them an email with all 6 of my e mail address's in them if they want them, they can have any bit of info they like.

What are sonY going to do? Start buying things with my bank cards? I have a temp. min. wage job, they have far more money than me. I don't hack so they wouldn't want to sue me.

It's got nothing to do with what geohot did or didn't do. Or even what anyone else did or didn't do.

Say you followed a link to his website after reading a news article. Well guess what. Now sony has your IP and as far as they're concerned you could just be another hacker looking for the rootkey.

And like sony is going to check every IP as a legitimate threat before just banning them from their network if worst comes to worst and they can't legitimately get rid of hackers normally.

This is essentially cencorship. They now have the power to threaten you into not visiting a website they don't like. Freedom of information. Not anymore.

Also I stand by Geohot in this battle anyway.

I'm not a hacker. I don't want to hack anything, let alone my precious ps3. But I'm not happy about sony throwing their hefty weight around to shut someone up for doing something that is perfectly legal.
You think they are just going to carpet ban every single PSN account who has gone onto that site? Really? That would be most of the PSN network, they aren't going to do that.

I think were all just specualting on what there going to do with it, they may use it inline with other evidance to ban them. They may just be looking at numbers who support this guy.

There not going to use infomation to ban people going on sites they don't like, there not going to ban anybody for going onto a japscat site. They might ban them for going on sites which tell people how to ruin other peoples online experiance of PSN.

Do you really think there going to invade 50+ million peoples online history, constantly?

Whether they're going to do it or not isn't the issue. That's the implied threat.

In otherwords. Do something we don't like (outside of our ToS mind you) and we'll ban you.

That doesn't sit well with me.

They currently have access to information that they legally shouldn't be allowed to have.

That stinks of foul play to me.
If it stops dicks ruining my online play, I am all for it. Prevention is better than cure, yeah sony could have put more time into security blah blah blah but it's too late for that now, so there left with this.

People already bang on about how much better XBL is, which I have doubts on, if geohot wins then I suspect hackers will just run rampant on it as a "FUCK YOU SONY!.

IPs don't prove anything. Based purely on the websites I've been to I'd be a supporter of PETA, the Weastboro Baptist Church and every major political party in the US and Canada.

EDIT: Sony's behavior as of late is making me very glad I never got around to buying their console. I got very close recently.

Bullshit. Not true at all. People have been pirating 360 games since day one and, far from going bankrupt, Microsoft has made a lot of money on the console. More people will buy the PS3 with the specific goal of piracy in mind now, but those are people who wouldn't have bought games regardless. At least Sony will cash in off of them buying the console to begin with.
I'm willing to bet MS's success with the 360 has less to do with the games and more to do with the fact that they charge for multiplayer on a console that probably doesn't cost that much to make.

There is plenty that Sony can do in the here and now to help out legitimate customers.
Like?

Except that they were, there are even articles here on the escapist about people hacking the ps3 from before they sony removed the other os. Talking about stuff you have no clue about like this only makes you look like an idiot.
Taking that as fact, my point still stands.

Because of this whole issue, a far greater number of people now have the ability and will to pirate/homebrew on the PS3.

As a sidenote, there's no real need to call people idiots, when they could just as well be misinformed.

It's a minor violation of the right to privacy. I can't see trying to enforce it ever actually making it to court, and even if it did you'd never win, but there it is.

It's to argue jurisdiction, which I don't really see mattering.
It does...

If Sony stays in CA, it's much cheaper on them. If they go to New Jersey, it's a lot more expensive.

Think of the inverse for Geohot and he's the accused. He SHOULD have a right to his own jurisdiction.

I hope LG spanks Sony badly, and follows them all around Europe getting a prohibition of sale in every country, followed up by having to pay LG for each of the 41 million PS3s they sold using LG's IP that they tried to sue LG for using. And yes, the way they're dealing with the jailbreak situation is exactly why I hope LG owns them.

Amen.

Makes me wanna visit the guy's site just so they get their perverted little hands on my ever-so-dynamic IP.

And also, crack every piece of hardware they ever made :D

Wow, there are all sorts of issues with this, the biggest being that the U.S. has already created precedent in the Digital Millenium Copyright Act that allows circumventing security measures via root key/jailbreaking in order to use legit software and actions. Due to the judge's jurisdiction (or lack thereof) he has no right making rulings that subvert that decision. If someone, like Sony wants to debate the validity of that ruling that is the jurisdiction of a supreme court, not a civil court.

I've seen a lot of people saying they don't mind Sony's bullshit as long as they get a good online experience.

It boggles the mind how people are basically giving they own human rights away just so they have a marginally better chance of fair games.

Newsflash: hacks are the least of your concerns if ya want a fair game. Few people actually use hacks to cheat, most exploit the game's flaws. And seeing as games are becoming more and more complex, rest assured, we'll see a lot more flaws with time.

Also, who in their right minds would spend countless hours developing a "hack" for one game? This isn't done overnight by an Average Joe, people that do this kind of shit usually have better things to "hack", like porn sites and TV terminals for free satellite TV.

It would be nice if people would stop spreading their asscheeks for an insignificant amount of extra comfort. Be glad some people are fighting the good fight, putting their asses on the line for ungrateful little brats like you.

Get a clue.

FUCK SONY!
