Well, it is an excuse, sorta. The creators know that they can sell crap, so why bother putting the effort into it?

This hardly applies only to kids movies. When people don't have to try, they won't.
true (and I know Ive alreay said this a million times) but If I were a starwars fan and then Lucas turns around and says "yeah well....they were for KIDS!"

I would be like "Fuck you Lucas!" because its probably the stupidiest excuse ever, and also your being insulted almost

Dude kids films, like any movie can suck. It's all about personal preference.
*Points you towards the Toy Story DVD's*. Now shut up and enjoy.

Yknow, I find it sad that most kids movies are better in almost every way that "adult" summer movies. They usually have Better than the average plot and character development, they often use more intelectual humour than the "Dur Hur guy got hit in the nuts" type that seems to be par for the course in more grown up movies.
This isn't by all means all movies, but I have just seen far too many come out with unlikeable characters, terrible plots and an entirely immature and bland sense of humour. Its pathetic when a cheap marketing ploy like Cars 2 has more likeable characters, more intelegent humour and is more memorable than the allegedly adult movies I saw immedeately before and after it.
(bad teacher and I can't for the life of me remember the name of the other)
I think thats definetly due to PIXAR

but hell whats great is that Dreamworks is (hopefully) stepping up and lifting their game, after shrek after sherk and then (sweet Jesus) Shark tale they come out with awsome films like Kung Fu panda and how to trian your dragon

I mean at first Kung fu panda I thourght (oh great jack blacks a panda..this is gonna be crap) but no its actually a VERY good film and has some surprisingly beautiful moments

If he didn't say anything, Star Wars fans would still look at the movies, feel insulted and yell "Fuck you!".

Though, I'm not a big fan, and I still feel that way. Hell, I never saw Avatar, because it looked insulting. Not due to the racism, sexism, anti-technology, anti-capitalist while raking in the millions stuff, but if the makers think I'll accept a society that can build spaceships is going to have trouble fighting people in the stone age, then they are insulting me.

You are correct...a bad movie is a bad movie.

As for your example, I still think the Prequel Trilogy gets more crap than it deserves.

I wasnt a fan of AVATAR because its messgae was so obvious and stupid, as in "weve been here a million times before" it felt like an adult patronizing me and expecting me to feel bad....because duurrr I didnt know destroying the evironment was bad and that humans are dicks

persoanlly I'm a little sick of the "omg look at us we are such dicks" theme

and when it comes down to it District 9 had similar themes but its better BECAUSE its done a million times better, the humans are dicks but they are dicks in a way that feels more realistic and beliavable (oh and the aliens get up to their own share of dickery)

also I DO NOT belive the story should get a free pass because "it isnt based on somthing" (no way in hell Ill call it original)

also you mention sexism, Im interested where exactally did you get this impression from?

EDIT: also in the end I wasnt thinking of the Na'vi or the people who stayed behined, I was thinking of all those people on earth who were suffering, what was the movie daying? they were a lost cause?

mabye, but as far as I'm concerned they SHOULD have been better, theres simply no excuse (even under the layers upon layers of...well all that stuff that comes with rabid nerd fans)

Bearing in mind I have avoided seeing it, I did see bits of an interview Cameron did for Playboy, in which he discusses making the female alien sexy, in great and rather disturbing detail, and how he creates one-dimensional fanservice because real women are too hard for his audience to understand.

Also, as I understand it, once the main guy is an honourary alien and plugs into a monster, he gets to choose his wife, and she has to agree to this, regardless of being an actual alien and also plugging into things?

Yes, they should have been better. Jar Jar should have been toned down in Phantom, and Anakin...well, I know good child actors are kind of rare, but they should have found one. Anakin should have been a secondary character in Clones, cutting down on the angsty romance and focusing on Obi-wan's clone army spy story. Sith...well, it mostly was just wounded by how the previous movie set up Anakin, but I think Dooku should have lived longer and been more involved in Anakin's fall.

They should have been better, but they weren't. They're not as good as the Original Trilogy. However, despite their problems, they were still good movies. They weren't among the best films of their time, which they should have been, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy them.

ah k fair enough

I dont remember much from the movie soo....

the female alien didnt come across as one dimentional..I mean she was your standard "tough" charachter who was tasked with the responsibility of teaching Jake (the guy) and they warm up to each other blah blah you can guess the rest

I mean I guess the Na'vi are a tribal culture so I mean they are going to have customs that reflect this, I know that they are monogumous for life...I'm not so sure about the women not having a say, but I guess that might be tru, liek I said I dont remember much

There's a massive difference between a great kids movie, and a great movie. However there have been some great films, that just happen to be kids movies.
I may have just confused myself.

No, simply being a kids movie isn't an excuse.

Its the same issue with Summer blockbusters and AAA games: "its just meant to be fun." Well yeah, that doesn't mean it has to be overtly stupid or just plain bad.

Thor is a simple, big-budget Summer film. Its also well acted, well written, well directed, humorous and fun.

As for the Star Wars examples, I don't think either of the trilogies has a specific target audience. Certainly they're suitable for kids, but I don't think they're particularly aimed at either them or adults. I can see how it may apply to Episode 1 considering it revolves around a child, but RotS definitely isn't squarely aimed at children. As for Jar Jar Binks, whilst a poor decision, simply having a character for kids doesn't make a film squarely for them.

I think I'll just end this by saying Pixar and Toy Story.

Cause with kids all you need to sell is a gimmick. Look at cars 2. made more then toy story 3. But is jut a movie about talking cars. An put in talking animals and you got a world wide phenomenon with you.
And star wars for kids? In the third film anakin brutally kill little kids, chokes his pregnant wife and nearly kills his father-figure.

No it isn't an excuse a bad movie is a bad movie, and there have been several good kids movies: Toy Story, How to Train Your Dragon, Lion King.

Edit: Thanks Monoochrom for the spelling fix.

well one about a penguin thats shit at singing but he can dance like a boss can be excused as 'just for kids'. an annoying wanker created for marketing purposes cannot be justified. ever.
