If the last game in the series I played was Assassin's Creed 2, would it be alright to skip to AC3?

Also: A NEW SEASON OF MLP STARTED!!! FNKIAIEFHNDSIFNHWIFNALN!!!... Ahem. I am truly sorry for that, it was very unprofessional.

Yes. There is a bit of story between 2 and 3 in Brotherhood and Revelations but there is a recap before the game and you can also find recaps online. I am going to suggest you play Brotherhood because it's a great game but you can skip Revelations. Out of all of Ezio's games Revelations is the one that adds the least amount in his story and Desmond's story.

At least Brotherhood, as some important things go down in Desmond's story. You could probably skip Revelations, though.

Actually, yes, you really could skip Revelations. All that really does is give Desmond a bit of a backstory, which isn't necessary for AC3.

Brotherhood is a pretty good one. I was prepared to hate it but I ended up enjoying it more than AC2 in spite of myself. You might not need it but it ties up Ezio's storyline sufficiently and is pretty fun.

However, Revelations tends to make me a bit...vocal.

Desmond's Dad has joined the party and everyone is now in New York.

Other than that, you should avoid Revelations. It really does everything in its power to paint Ezio as an uncaring monster who murder countless people and manipulate the grief of others for the stupidest of reasons. The last battle is completely stupid and Ezio ends up almost triggering a war because someone sort of insults him.

Granted, I can admit that I hate Revelations more than your average player. Still, it's not worth the time. AC3 is a lot more fun and a lot more satisfying.

IMO the only relevant thing about Revelations is the expanded view of Altiar's backstory. Everything else is very skipable.

I tended to be rather charitable to AC:R when I first played it (before finishing, that is), but as time went on, I found more and more crap about it that I hated (egregious busy-work in city recovery, the thin as hell story, the shit mini-game, the worst level of research (was glad they got some stuff from the books, but other bits were so far out *derp*) and one of the crappiest end-fights ever) that I kind of sideline that and AC:B, to be played when I want to fall asleep.

Revelations did give us the Armor of Ishak Pasha, so I can forgive it.
You may be able to forgive it, but I lacked the patience to get around to getting it... (only bothered as far as Janissary armour...) as did many others, I'd guess...

I would say play Revelations, because of Subject 16 and his ramblings that actually come up in III. I just beat it today, so I can faithfully say your fine without playing Brotherhood.

I think that in terms of game mechanics and character development, Brotherhood is actually the best of the series. I don't think Revalations was bad or anything per se, but the storyline just didn't feel as immersive, especially considering the rather bizarre epilogue concerning "the ones who came before".

The only reasons to play those games before AC3, is for the Desmond part, if you don't care about that, skip away.
I would say skip brotherhood because in my opinion it was the worse of the series, but this is from a guy who think AC1 is the best by the series and revelations was more more enjoyable then the dull and forgettable junk that 2 and brotherhood were.

Just read the plot summaries of the others; you won't understand what's going on with Desmond otherwise - but there haven't been any important changes to gameplay since then really, and they weren't that great, so yeah, skip 'em.

You could easily just skip to AC3. If you don't care about seeing the story first-hand, the opening video covers everything large you need to know.
