So neither of you are going to assume that she learned from the mistake, that she's not going to do specifically because of the backlash she got last time? Just going to jump straight into accusations are we?
I get backlash constantly. But usually the backlash just proves my point.

As for the Bond thing, clearly both of them missed that point entirely. It wasnt about how talking about interests is unimportant, and if that is what peopel took away, they took away the wrong thing. Or am I a hypocrite for recommending the indie game Barony?

To comment on the R&P issue.

I admit that i frequented that forum at times and had some productive discussions.

That said, i feel the moderation could be better on some level in both moderating the conduct of people and moderating the dialectic to ensure that the debate is kept on track. I admit that I don't know fully how to reach that state of "better" but I would like the R&P forum to reach the point of the idealized Greek Forums: high end political and philosophic discussions done with strict adherence to the principles of debate with well done constructing and rebuttal arguments.

Ya know what? I'm not even gonna bother with this thread anymore. All we do is argue, and nothing is ever gonna get done. Maybe if things pick up... but I doubt it at this point.

Can we PLEEEAAAASE bring back R&P? Off-topic isn't even usable anymore. At least when we lost Gaming Discussion to spam it was funny, this just makes me want to leave the site.
Then make more Off-Topic threads: fill the forum with non-R&P discussion.

Not directed at you personally, but...

Be the change you want to see in the world, take responsibility for the content of your forums, etc. This is user-generated material. Why do so many people seem to think everyone else should be creating debate, and are unhappy when they aren't generating the "right" sort of stuff?
I understand where you?re coming from; we are each individually responsible for the livelihood of the forums and how ?on task? they stay relative to their title, but to be fair, that?s a bit like saying if your local library suddenly decides to host a no-holds-barred political debate, the silence of patrons expecting a library-like environment should drown out the noise of the loud, heated opinions being flung around with abandon.

R&P was a separate forum at one point for a reason, and the decision to simply shut it down and dump it into Off-Topic [I feel] was a poor one. I used to like popping into OT each morning and seeing the myriad flavors of interesting, fun or weird topics I might engage in, but for the past few months the most active topics are ?[POLITICS]? or ?Trump? flavored, and it?s disheartening. Why start a new topic if you know it?s going to be immediately pushed to the second page the next time Trump opens his mouth and says something invariably stupid or insensitive?

Do NOT get me wrong; I am myself very apolitical, but I am cognizant that politics IS an important topic and discussion is necessary, but for as little actual difference as is affected by the discussion of it here, it?s prominence in a once purposefully casual, easy-going and ?nonpartisan? forum is unnecessarily stifling.

Pretty much spot on- there's nothing wrong with there being political threads. But when they're utterly swamping the field of the rest of the threads with their same old same old outrage, it barely seems worth it creating new off topic threads when the slightest provocation in the real world will guarantee a new wave of political threads show up here in no time.

When Escapist forums had a good population, even with R&P separated, your thread could be pushed to the second page in OT quickly just due to the sheer number of people posting. I dunno if it will ever be that busy again, but would be nice.

While I do think they should be separated, I also do not think that excess forum activity should be the reason for it. Excess forum activity is what we want to happen, not something that should be considered a negative. "Too many threads and people posting" is what we actually want to have happen right?

I personally would like to see a Film and television section because having all "latest movie" discussion in one thread keeps me from wanting to read it or engage in discussion because you will have to wade through a single massive thread to find a movie you want to talk rather than having separate threads for different movies so you can just pick the ones you want to read about by title.

I feel the escapist really should just put their foot down on how they feel about topics of that nature and either create the R&P server or just say "no more"

They already said they think the discussions that are being had are fine, but due to the new editor actually saying that the Escapist primary focus is now going to be Games and movies, and we already have a games section the movies section just makes sense.

EDIT: In addition, Look at the size of the threads on film and TV in the Off Topic forum.. 930 posts in one 246 in another and we are supposed to wade through that to find the discussion we were having on a particular movie or series?!

Agreeable, that forum is way too massive. Some sort of cataloging or archiving would be helpful but a movies section would be nice. Plus, I admit that i'm not sure how many anime fans are still on the Escapist considering the lack of reception to the Anitube forum I made

It's not simply ?too many threads and people posting;? (agreed; the more activity, the better;) it?s ?too many threads that are divisive, exclusionary, partisan and aggressive in a once purposefully laid-back, ?for fun? environment.? R&P was separate at one point purely because of the fundamentally contentious nature of its threads; deciding it could share Off-Topic?s space was like mixing ground beef, pork and chicken in with the salad and tofu then putting the onus on the vegans to pick through it all for meal they expect to eat while visiting a self-proclaimed ?vegan restaurant;? it?s possible, but makes no sense given you?d turn off most vegans.

I and others could post more OT threads, but not enough to stave off the deluge of

Squilookle said:
?threads with their same old same old outrage?
and that?s the crux of it. One could argue that maybe OT simply isn?t active enough on its own, so ?our fault? I guess, but tasking us to essentially make up more shit to talk about in a once uniquely identified ?Off Topic? space just to shout over a din which flies in the face of the spirit of the forum (a din we?ve nothing to do with and cannot directly affect or control) is dismissive of a valid concern when the solution is as simple as giving R&P its space back. I know that sounds entitled, but it?s not intended to be; it just a matter-of-fact statement that Off Topic has been muscled out by R&P, or, to put it more cynically:

I completely understand; having non-stop, heated political discussion floating atop the Off Topic forum keeps me from wanting to read it or engage in discussion as well.

That IS great news!! And congrats on netting a Film and Television forum; that too will be a welcome addition!

And to my R&P thread frequenting Escapist friends, I hope you don?t think I or anyone was necessarily ragging on you; you simply played the hand you were dealt; you didn?t ASK to be lumped in with OT and were quite vocal in protest when your forum was taken away. I think we all wanted the same thing; hopefully you see this as a victory as well.

Do you get a sense of toxicity from the thread headlines? Or do you actually go into the threads to read them, and if you're not interested in them, why would you?

I don't think R&P has ever been nicer since it moved to Off-Topic. It's certainly contentious, but not toxic.

On the other hand, R&P was far nicer before it was merged into OT than it was 3-4 years previously, principally I think because most of the worst troublemakers had been banned by then.

So... if film and TV has a new home, and R&P has a new home (sort of, it isn't really clear what's happening there), what's going to be in off-topic? I think it's just going to be Tippy2K2's thread about sports (which totally deserve their own forum!).

(I used to quite enjoy the whirlpool threads, but I think it they come back we should have a volcano as the threat element.)
