A fairly self explanatory topic. I just semi-impulse bought a PS Vita and so far I really like it, I havea few PSOne titles on it though I have a l ot of those anyway, aswell as Uncharted and Rayman Origins from PS+. I know Unit 13 is coming to PS+ next month and thats pretty fun from the demo, there's also Ninja Gaiden but I don't know if that's any good.

I have PS+ and a 32GB card coming, so I'm looking for recommendations of Vita games and PSP titles too, maybe even some more obscure PS1 games (I have the RE's, Silent Hill, Medevil, Crash 1-3, CTR, Spyro 1-3, Rayman 2, Pandemonium!, etc).

So, recommendations?

Oh and don't make this a Vita vs 3DS thread. I have both, I like my 3DS a bunch but I'm a grown up so I can has them all. The Vita feels better built anyway, just saying, it lacks the loose creaky backplate of the 3DS XL...

Ratchet and clank games from the PSP for starters
I believe I have a redemption voucher for size matters :p May give it a whirl, though I went of Ratchet & Clank after the PS2.

Disgaea 1-3 if you like tactical RPGs and JRPGs. 1 and 2 are the PSP versions available on the PSN, 3 has its own Vita version.

Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward if you like puzzle games and heavily story-driven games (it's a visual novel).

Gravity Rush if you like action-adventure games, though the controls do take a bit of getting used to.

BlazBlue: Continuum Shift EXTEND if you like fighting games (it's also a visual novel, and has some really excellent writing).

Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden, even if you've already played their PS2 versions. >:D

LittleBigPlanet Vita if you like 2D platformers.

Final Fantasy IX from the PSN.

Dissidia: Final Fantasy and Dissidia 012 if you like fighting games (though they're nothing like any other fighting games I've played before, which is probably part of why I had so much fun with them).

Muramasa: Rebirth for 2D side-scrolling ARPG (though I don't know if it's been released in the UK...)

Wipeout 2048 if you want a futuristic racing game.

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection (though the Vita version has Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater and doesn't include Peace Walker because you can get it separately on the PSN, I believe).

And others that I haven't played yet myself, of course.

Beat the first 2 Disgaes but got bored of the series after 3.

Not a fan of visual novels but if it pops up on plus or a demo comes along i'll try it for something different.

I have Wipeout and LBP from the bundle.

I've beaten the MGS games too many times on other things.

I don't know anything about Persona and nobody ever seems to tell me anything about it besides "it's awesome" but I'd like to know more details, like how the combat system works, whats it like compared to more staple JRPG's, etc. Definately interested.

Will look into Dissidia and also gonna be grabbing FF Tactics and Tactics Ogre.

Do have all the old FF games to replay, and got Gravity Rush of Plus and will be playing when my 32GB card arrives (I filled the 8GB one in like 20 minutes).

EDit!

I really wanna play Muramasa on the Vita but there's no date for EU/UK release because there's no publisher. We also don't have a date for Dragons Crown even for PS3 ): Which really sucks because they both look great.

Well, Persona kinda isn't like most other JRPGs. At least not when you're taking the 'typical' big ones like Tales of [Blank] or Final Fantasy.

It's a combination of life-sim, dungeon crawling, and classical turn-based combat that works far better than it sounds like it would on paper. They've got fantastic writing, and while the pacing still plods along at a slow pace, once it starts picking up it really picks up. I'll just put it this way: Persona 4 Golden is one of the few games over 30 hours long that I played straight through without going and playing something else in between.

Whats the combat system like? Is it just turn based like classic Dragon Quest? Is it a pseudo-real time thing?

Don't know much about Vita specifically except Soul Sacrifice looks pretty good, but for PSP, Monster Hunter could be good (you either like MH or you don't) and the Metal Gear games (Portable Ops, Peacewalker) are ridiculously good, they're proper games. Once again though you probably know whether or not you like Metal Gear.

It's fully turn-based, yeah.

The party except for the player character is controlled by the AI by default, but in Persona 4 (and Golden) and the PSP version of Persona 3, you can change their tactics around to allow you to control everything instead (which in my opinion is a lot better than letting the computer do half of the fighting, or potentially letting you die out of stupidity).

The one thing that might be a bit of a sticking point is that it does the whole "MC dies, it's game over" thing, but Golden is a little more forgiving in that regard than the original PS2 version was (when you die you can restart at the beginning of the floor you died on, from what I remember) or Persona 3. It was never much of a problem for me.

There's a bit of a monster-collecting aspect too, in that when you finish combat you can often obtain more Personae for the MC to use, which you can level up or combine together with other Persona creatures to create new, often more powerful ones.

You mean a JRPG where I actually controla full party and can therefor actually strategise and use my brain to win? Fuck me I haven't played one of those since the early 2000's. I'll likely have to pick it up now.

Though outside of pokemon I've never been big on monster taming.

Everything that Shrekfan said, especially about Persona. Seriously, you should try it. I myself was never into JRPGs until I accidentally downloaded Persona 3: Portable on my PSP.

Also, recently released Muramasa Rebirth is kinda awesome. It's more or less simple 2D slasher with INCREDIBLE graphics. Real fun.

Oh, it's not really monster taming, not in the same way as Pokemon at least. They level up separately from the player character and have their own unique characteristics and spells, but you don't have to catch them or anything, you just win them in a little card-selecting minigame after combat and they're part of your character's abilities. Everyone except the MC has one specific Persona attached to them, but the MC can have any number collected and can equip more and more as you go through the game, to a maximum of 10 at a time. There's no convoluted catch, train, please, evolve mechanic sort of thing, it's just an extension of powers.

Ah then I'll definately check it out, is it safe starting at Persona 4 Golden?

I could do with something like Mega Man X, is Maverick Hunter for the PSP any good?

The persona are summoned from the MC's consciousness so there's no taming involved. You just have to be at the in-game "mental" level to handle those aspects of your psyche, which is the whole point. They use the Carl Jung explanations for persona and the life-sim mechanics in these games; the persona appears as a consciously created personality or identity fashioned out of part of the collective psyche through socialization, acculturation and experience. The classical term persona, explicitly and originally, meant the mask which the actor bears, expressing the role he plays. Its a character mask in the classical sense known to theatre, with its double function: both intended to make a certain impression to others, and to hide (part of) the true nature of the individual. The therapist then aims to assist the individuation process through which the client (re-)gains his "own self" ? by liberating the self, both from the deceptive cover of the persona, and from the power of unconscious impulses.

And you use them to battle shadows which are another aspect of the human psyche along with the choice of just battling without summoning. You'll see a lot of the personas play out as the Demons from the other Shin Megami Tensei games.

Enjoy Monster HUnter but sinking my teeth into 3U at the moment. As for Metal Gear well, I love MGS3, and 2 and 4 are decent, but I didn't like Peace Walker ):

Well, Persona 4: Golden is easiest to get into, but I'm just afraid that it's TOO easy to get into. You just might not be able to cope with Persona 3 after that. And you should try BOTH games, for they are equally brilliant in different ways.
