Not sure if that will work.
Why would you bother looking for a solution if you were just going to ignore it anyway?

And why would you bother asking for help if you were going to ignore the majority of the responses?
If you read the rest of my message, it says that I will use this method, but only after I try using other methods.

I'm not saying it won't work at all, I'm just saying I'm a bit unsure about the solution, but I will try it anyway if it gets the game to work.

But why in that order, why not do the quickest solutions first?

1. Go here on your PC.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\deus ex - human revolution

2. Delete the files "steamapi.dll" and "dxhr.exe"

3. Verify game cache. It will re-download those files.

4. Tell me if it works/doesn't work.

Edit: As a side note.
I had that same problem when I tried to play it. It took me less than 5 minutes to google it, read a thread, and fix it myself.

If the game has been out more than a couple of months, chances are the problem you are experiencing has been found, and solved by other people a dozen times before.

GOOGLE IT!

You will always get a better result, sooner.

Also use the Steam User's Forums. They will usually be 10x more helpful than these ones.
Just tried those steps, and it still doesn't work. Just no idea what's going on with it.

Try lowering all the graphics settings in the config file[footnote]Google where to find it because I'm not entirely sure right now...[/footnote] It shouldn't be too hard to work out which ones you need to lower etc, I had a similar problem in that the game would only run on the lowest settings. Might be that...

The game's been out for ages now; Googling the issue should net you a result in about 5 seconds.

I know you're looking for answers and all but Google really would benifit you far more than asking on a forum.

If you typed your question into google you would have your answer faster and far more fixes for a wider range of problems.

As it stands, go directly to the Deus Ex folder, delete the Deus Ex folder, have steam re-install, and if not google the problem.

I'm not trying to be an ass, this would just help you better and get your answers faster. Hell youtube might even have the answer.

Well I appreciate the help and advice, but I have tried every solution that I've been able to find on Google, the Steam forums or other websites and forums, and nothing has worked.

So I'm done. I've had it. Tried the solutions, it won't launch at all, the game is just broken (or at least the exe file or something is broken). I mean, I'm able to run The Missing Link DLC just fine, but not the main game, so I doubt it has anything to do with driver updates or any kind of system requirement update. I also doubt it has anything to with the anti-virus blocking it because it it was that, I'm certain that the anti-virus or some other program would have let me know because it always does whenever I launch Killing Floor (Kaspersky believed it had keylogging software in it, can you believe that?).

So that's it, I guess. I'm not sure there's anything else I can do since I've tried everything to get the game to work. Might as well un-install the game and be much better off buying it for the 360.

Thanks for your help guys. I really appreciate it, but I'm afraid this time it has been unsuccessful.

Have you tried restarting Steam? I've needed to do it a couple of times after installing games with Steam.

What do you think I did first?

Seriously though, yes.

The antivirus thing isn't exactly true, avast blocked Section 8 for me without saying anything. It literally put a file in quarantine that was required for the game to launch.

When I bought the Witcher, it wouldn't let me play the game for a good week because Valve didn't have enough CD keys. It's apparently happened a lot before, so try it again in a few days.

Has anyone worked this out yet? I seem to have the exact same issue as the OP, the only difference is I'm installing from a DVD so uninstalling and reinstalling didn't take me long, and I don't have the Missing Link (which he was able to run the game via) I have I've tried everything else mentioned here, to no avail. I'll summarise

Disabled UAC yes
Verified Files yes
Deleted the exe and steamapi and verified again yes
Disabled antivirus yes
Checked latest drivers installed yes
Uninstalled and reinstalled game yes
Restarted computer yes
Looked for clientregistry.blob... doesn't appear to exist on my computer

Whether I try to open it by running the exe file launching through steam, through the shortcut on the desktop, through the DLC pages on steam (which I think is a shortcut to steam anyway) or through the launcher dialog that appears when I insert the DVD, the same thing happens; basically nothing at all, more specifically, doing this with task manager open, the process dxhr.exe *32 appears uses 73MB of RAM and 0% of the CPU, does nothing, then disappears.

Disabling UAC did get it to download DirectX before then proceeding to once again do nothing, then disappear.

And people should lay off the OP, I have tried Googling the answer to this problem, that is how I found myself here. All I found in Google was a whole bunch of people posting exactly the same problem and esteemed forum members just replying to say 'Google it noob'

Weird, if you've loggoed on to Steam ever, it should be in the Steam install directory. With that said, I doubt it'll help, though, that has mostly to do with Steam failing the authentication.

That's weird. OK, this is a long shot, but try killing the process before it terminates naturally, then launch it again. I had a somewhat similar issue with several games - the process would just hang after a second or two (before the game even launched a window) and killing and starting again fixed it. No idea what caused it and it went away by itself anyway. I doubt it's the same problem with you but it doesn't hurt to try.

Other than that, I don't think I can help you more. Try posting on the Steam forums and/or the official forums for the game. They usually have people with more in-depth knowledge of how to fix it.

If you have a xbox360 or a ps3 buy the console version. This will make the game work for sure.

(Sorry couldn`t resist)

This is the best part of owning a PC; the arcane rituals you must go through every now and then to prove your worth.

Ping an email to Steam they may deign to help you.

Thanks for replying. You were right to be pessimistic, terminating the process didn't work.

There was a moment just earlier when I tried to open it and instead got the 'this application has stopped responding error', more that I've ever got from it before. I thought I'd made progress as the next time I tried to run it I was told Steam needed to update. After that I ran Deus Ex again with a slight amount of optimism only to find that nothing had changed.

Looking in the game directory, there is a memory dump for each time I've tried unsuccessfully to run it. I think I'll go to Steam support and mention I have these in the hope that someone there can diagnose the problem by looking at them.

I feel somehow that this is what I get for being a mug and deciding to start buying games instead of pirating them. I've had nothing but trouble from legally bought games. I bet if I'd pirated Deus Ex I'd be playing it by now.
