Since GTA IV was a (I don't want to say complete) letdown gameplay wise, I started looking towards other games to relive the sandbox legacy...
Saints Row 2 did an okay job, but it was a little too over-the-top. While that isn't a bad thing, I still want to be able to do...Plausable things...
If you compare San Andreas and IV while completly disregarding the graphics, then you'd plainly see that IV was a catastrophic step down...
That being said, I set my sights on Just Cause 2.
Now, so far I've only played the demo, so I might not know what I'm saying.
But.
It's fucking amazing! I mean, have you played the demo yet? The landscape is orgasmic, and all of the extras, features, things you can just do are awesome. I'm surely going to buy this in the very near future, after giving it a final test over at a friends house tomorrow to make sure I'm buying a good game.
But I'd say that it's the new GTA, unless Rockstar decides get their heads out of their asses and make GTA V with all of the features they know that we want...
That is all...

I did love the first one, although it was very repetitive, it was still insanely fun. Jumping from helicopter to helicopter, such fun.

I'm going to get the new one, when I get a chance to get Windows 7. It's stupid that it requires it though.

I am one of those who thought that GTA4 was pretty bad. It was fun for a while, but compared to San Andreas, it was a total let down.

Which reminds me, I must play San Andreas again.
I'm right there with you. I have two copies of San Andreas on my computer.
One for multiplayer, and one completly modded version...

The first Just Cause was quite mediocre in my opinion, I did play the demo of JC2 and it seems better, but nothing really special, and let down further by the fact that I played the PC version and it seems to be a really crappy port.

Now hold up: though the demo may have been absolutely incredible, from what I've heard, the full game is extremely repetitive, essentially forcing you to complete the same missions in very similar areas over and over again.

Of course, I've yet to play the full game, so I can't back this up, but if these rumors are true, I'm afraid that all of the potential of the demo is lost, sorry to say.

Well, having played through all of the GTA games, aren't they also, in a way, repetetive?
Kill X steal Y and escape from Z...
Pretty much throughout the series.
It's not exactly a complaint, but most sandbox games are judged by the features outside of the missions...
You don't really see as many gamers judging games by their story or missions on the same level as features, graphics, and content...
Some people do, but most don't...

That's actually a very good point; I hadn't thought of it like that. Of course, I'm not much of a sandbox gamer, so I can't really say I have much to back that up on, but I'll take your word for it.

However, from what I've heard, the environments don't change much between location, making it less fun to explore. I'm just saying, you might want to rent it to make sure the full game holds up. I'll be doing that myself, because the demo is pretty kickass.

That's why I'm going to go test it out over at a friend's house.
He's already bought it, having given in to the hype, and I want to see if it's going to be worth my money...
As for the environments, well I've looked at some screenshots and there seem to be a lot of different ones...
I can't be too sure, but it looks like the island is pretty large, filled with hundreds of toys, and has a lot of different settings to go nuts in...

I don't think it will be like Grand Theft Auto. From what I've seen, Just Cause 2 looks like it was inspired quite a bit from the Mercenaries series and specifically Mercenaries 2: World in Flames. The premise is the same: badass dude goes around a tropical country and proceeds to topple an oppressive government by hijacking helicopters and tanks and blowing shit up. The exception is that Mercenaries 2 took place in Venezuela while JC2 takes place on some fictional 400 square mile island in the Caribbean. JC2 will not be the new GTA. Instead it will be the new Mercenaries 2, and by that I mean it may actually be good and be the sort of game that fans of Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction (myself included) were hoping for when the mediocre World in Flames came out.

Dunno what's with the GTA IV hate, it's a great game. The only complaint I read is "joo cant'nt fly planez", which I don't give much of a shit about because you'll just get completely shafted by buildings that pop up out of no where. I can play GTA IV all day long, I can only play San Andreas for an hour or so before I get bored of it. Besides, there's plenty to do in IV. The city, gameplay, graphics, story and feel are so much better than San Andreas'.

Back on topic, I've got JC2, it's very fun. The map is huge, I was waiting for a dungeon on WoW before and I spent about 10 minutes trying to drive to this tiny island in the middle of the sea. On the map it didn't look very far away, but it took a while to get there, even in the fast speedboat. There are some great jumps you can go over too, I loaded my saved game up 4 or 5 times to go over the same jump at different angles. When I can, I'm going to grapple a truck to a helicopter, fly as high as possible, jump in the truck and fall with it, it'll be dope.

I feel I should post this, if you don't wanna spoil this easter egg then don't watch. It is awesome though.

Perhaps I've been misinformed. Well, I'll be sure to at least give it a try then. Thanks for renewing my interest in it!
You guys are admirable.

That could so easily have become a heated opinion flame war. You two handled each other opinion with respect and open mindedness. You're kickin' arse and taking names!

Internet Cookies for the BOTH of you!

I've played it. 400 square miles, pretty awesome, except that I always need to sit myself down and have a chat about trying to use 20 square miles at a time. In a giant game like that, I catch myself always going from point A to point B, straight there, way-point guided, (usually airport on top left to airport on bottom left, city on far left to settlement on far right, ect,) which is not a problem or anything, but its the same as driving from Connecticut to Ohio, theres a ton of mileage with varying landscapes and all that jazz in between, but i've never seen anything past the highway.

I've got the game.

It's not bad. Basically, if you liked Red Faction: Guerilla then you will probably like Just Cause 2.

One big ol' nitpick though. The voice acting is among the worst I have ever heard in a game. Oh, and the vehicle controls are a bit dodgy, at least on the PC version.

1. GTA IV rocked.
2. San Andreas rocked.
3. Shut the fuck up about it already.

OT: I'm psyched for it. Sandboxers are my fav genre and I'm picking this up, probably this coming Tuesday.

I'm also psyched for Crackdown 2 and SUPER psyched for RED DEAD REDEMPTION.

I got it, and I love it. Terrible voice acting is hilarious to listen to, and the story is horrendous. But some of the most rewarding exploration and creative sandbox gameplay I've ever enjoyed, I highly recommend it. Yes, it is repetitive, but all sandbox games are, this one is no worse in my opinion, besides with the absolutely massive area, and multitude of travel arrangements, I've been quite pleased with it. Not perfect, but a damn silly ride.
