First of all, the nomenclature JRPG and WRPG is retarded and I refuse to use them. Second, I've played RPGs since 1988 (no distinction between those made in East or West, play them both, enjoy them both). I tend not to like MMORPGs. Third, Demon's Souls is more in line with the perceived precious "WRPG" style many here seem to go on about, so explain?
All right, a couple points:
1: I would like to know some reasoning as to why the nomenclature is "retarded." (Some argument rather than biased statement imposed as truth would be nice...)
2: I'm glad you've played a broad range of games. Well versed people make me happy and opinions can certainly differ.
3: JRPGs and WRPGs are different.
A: The storylines that you so find lacking I will grant is generic tripe. It does revolve around bad beings from a long time ago appear, kill all but the last hope to defeat them, and it is your job to find a way to stop them. That is used in almost all fantasy stories and games since forever, but that's what most action stories boil down to.
B:I: The diffenece between a Japanese (or other Asian inspired) RPG and a Western (or any other predominately white country)RPG is the focus on type of character development (speaking of story structure). In most JRPGs there is little personal input on character development. In WRPGs, there is a larger emphasis on a player's input on character development.
B:II: What this means is that, in the context of the story, the player decides where the story leads as dictated by the choices his/her game avatar makes (avatar meaning Player-controlled-character). I use this distinction to differentiate JRPGs and WRPGs, regardless of point of origin/production.
4: RPG does not truly stand for "Role-playing-game." I may be shouted down for taking this too literally, but I believe that a role playing game should be more than deciding what stat gets boosted or what armor your character should wear. A true RPG has you playing a ROLE. As such, I believe other games, such as Demon's Souls, or even Darksiders/God of War/Borderlands (games that are defined as RPGs simply because they have a game mechanic of leveling/improving characters) should not be considered so.
5: If you wish to discuss this further I would love to, but we should probably make a new thread for that. PM me with the new thread and we can continue this talk.
And now for the OT: My favorite moment from the game would have to be convincing Alistar to marry. Just the look of helplessness and the inflections by his voice actor were priceless! (God, that makes me sound horrible, doesn't it?)
