B-movie flair of the old Devil May Cry games
That's was a positive thing?

I always hating how brain-desolvingly stupid the old games were, but then again can't tell you if hard and edgy 5 second F-bombs are any better. But the game has been made by the same guys that did Enslaved and Heavily Sword, and if anything could have been taken for those games (other than being "Meh" in every other catagory), it was the story and characters was pretty damn good. So not sure of your argument there.

=/
The thing is the lore of Devil May Cry in general is really stupid, and anyone who says otherwise needs to get a checkup. The charm of the previous games came from the way in which the characters handled the massive amounts of stupid the narrative through out at them, which is why I compared them to a B-movie as a positive thing.

Ninja theory seems to have some interesting ideas when it comes to making a coherent narrative out of Devil May Cry (like the demons controlling the world through marketing) but the execution is terrible, because they still want to keep the ridiculousness of the old games. They basically want to have their pie and eat it too and it just doesn't work.

I'm not opposed to rebooting a series and I honestly kind of like Dante's redesign (though I wish the art direction wasn't puking color so he could wear something other than black and white), but if they are going to reboot DMC they had to go all the way with a different approach. If they want to build a serious and coherent narrative the proper tone has to be there for it, and it simply isn't and I get the feeling it's because Capcom can't decide if Devil May Cry is a big and important IP for them or not.

It was okay. The dialogue was passable until the boss fight. At first it was kinda funny because it fit with the boss theme of being really putrid and gross, but then after a while it just became too much.

The button layout was a bit strange, especially the grappling mechanic took some time to get used to.

The gameplay was pretty good, although it's not quite as fast and smooth as the previous games, thanks to the framerate which was quite bad at times.

Overall this game looks pretty solid. They seem to have some interesting ideas and I really like the art style as well as the soundtrack. In fact, the soundtrack was a very pleasant surprise. As for the story, it seems interesting enough as long as they don't completely screw it up.

"You can call me dante the demon killer, has a nice ring to it" etc etc etc ruined any chance of this game having good dialogue. It wasn't badass, and if I was the boss I would have just flat out said "dude that was lame, I'll try to forget it happened if you come up with a better line"

The gameplay is pretty right, however I feel like they should drop an evade key for traditional lock on because perfoming key gap closers like stinger is a pain.

So wait "You can call me dante the demon killer, has a nice ring to it" is stupid yet "This party's getting crazy" and all the other stupid crap he spouts out in DMC 3 is badass and cool?

No. One sounds like an insecure douche the other sounds like a confident douche. Guess which one is which?

The "Dante the demon killer" line certainly sounds more confident to me. What with him saying it to a demon and all that jazz.

If you feel the need to announce that you are a demon killer in front of your target, chances are you are trying to prove something. It is like going in front of the audince and saying "Call me singer becasue that really turns me on". Audience would just shout "STFU and sing"

Dante the demon-killer sounds like something an 8 year old with an active imagination would come up with. At least, that's what it sounds like to me. When you hear "this party's getting crazy!" you know Dante isn't talking shit for the sake of talking shit. He's genuinely going to enjoy kicking 7 hells of shit into whatever floats onto his path.

To me, it looks like Ninja Theory is trying way too hard to emulate the original feel of Dante with their own character but they don't know how. Which is odd, considering they never thought Dante to be "cool" anyway.

OT: Haven't played the demo yet, might give it a go but I'm not expecting much. Sounds like the only interesting aspect of the game (the world shifting and changing) is an over-abundance of colour that nauseates people, and if the music is anything like the trailers, then that'll certainly not win me over.

Dammit, I tried really hard to be neutral with this post, but I can't help hating every single design choice they've made with the game.

I think, kind of like the late james bond series, this reboot is supposed to show the origins of a new flawed character, that eventually may become the Mary Sue everyone loves in the end.

I played the demo recently myself and it was as bad as I was expecting it to be so no need to dwell on that. What pained me the most is that I saw a possibly great game beneath the terrible controls, horrendous camera, and enemies that come from nowhere. If Ninja theory was looking to troll they succeeded. Instead of making the fast paced frantic hack n' slash it could have been they made bullshit like having to hold buttons to use weapons and forced platforming.

It is truly a sad day.

I don't mean to troll, but was the writing in DMC ever really good? I played the first one but it's been such a long time ago I don't remember it all that well. But I thought that like Resi Evil before it, they kinda embraced the silly and went for bad dialogue. Am I remembering it wrong?

It was pretty bad, but it was fun in a campy sort of way. Like watching an 80s film.
This is just worse, and cringe-worthy. Coupled with the fact that it takes itself seriously, it gets kind of worrying.
