Nothing even compares to what I am going to link following this sentence.

...and there is plenty more where that came from.

Now if you excuse me, I am going to sob into a pillow in regards to how far Rare has fallen from the majesty that was their N64 days.

A lot of my favorite game music comes from Alexander Brandon and Michiel van den Bos. By listening to the games they've produced the music for you can really see how their music has evolved with the technology. For those of you who don't know who I'm talking about, they did the music for One Must Fall, Jazz Jack Rabbit, Unreal and Deus Ex. Not sure what they're doing now though?

Best music I've heard lately though comes from breath of fire IV. Yeah it's an old game, but I only got round to playing it recently. It does a really nice thing where depending on what continent you're one the music is either the more classical operatic type of stuff we're used to in RPGs, or a sort of Drum and Bass music with indian instruments used.

Just check out this final boss music. It's pretty damn cool.

Most of my favorite musics come from jrpgs. Some have Very good orchestral soundtracks.

But in them is a very unique one I love. Ar Tonelico 2 (there are two CDs as far as I'm aware, one is superior)

Then there's Grandia. It's pleasant and good bg music for certain occasions.

And then the normal No More Heroes and stuff I like.

Castle Crashers hands down has the best soundtrack for me. Very diverse to help set the mood, that doesn't mean the pieces for Dawn of War isn't good.

The songs in Borderlands DLC: Mad Moxxi's Underdome. The only good thing about that DLC tbh.

Grand Theft Auto 3 had some incredible stuff. Rise and MSX were the best, it even had epic classical music!
Starts to get good around 0:40

All of the Legend of Zelda games
All of the soundtracks to World of Warcraft are pretty good, but I feel like they get progressively better as the expansions come out. The one for Cataclysm is amazing.
The Mother series
Also, who could ignore the Mario games?

As for ambient music, Yume Nikki. The songs aren't exactly pleasing to the ear, but they work wonders for making me shit myself.

VVVVVV and Super Meat Boy both have stellar soundtracks, I even bought the latter, paying $10 for 73 tracks over 2 hours. And it's totally worth it.
Did the same thing. Got myself the Collectors Edition CD [http://dbsoundworks.bandcamp.com/album/super-meat-boy-double-cd-special-edition-soundtrack] of Super Meat Boy, and the regualr digital soundtrack for VVVVVV
