Background: I joined the Navy not too long ago and went through all that training stuff for the last 5 months or so, and I am now at my first command, which is in Japan.

So, it has been 5 months since i touched a game, and for a couple of different reasons can't get my xbox shipped to me right now.

Issue: A guy here on the base sold me his 3DS for 5000 yen. I got the system the charger, Super Mario 3d land, Harvest Moon, Devil Survivor Overclocked, and Devil Survivor 2.

So, i don't know anything about this system, I have never been at all interested in handheld games.

Some of my favorite games on 360 are Super Street Fighter 4, Mortal Kombat, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, Red Dead Redemption, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. I am also really into old school games like from the NES and SNES.

so, what should i be looking for with my new 3ds. keep in mind, i am in Japan, so it might be hard to get American games other than the ones they have here on base, but i haven't checked yet, and i have only been here about two weeks.

I'm really enjoying Kid Icarus at the moment. There've been a number of complaints on the part of the controls, people suffering from hand cramps and the like? I haven't really had that problem, at all. But, it is something to consider. Also Resident Evil Revelations is some good cheesy fun, it isn't, however, a good horror game. It can be a little spooky but... I always found Resident Evil a little too cheesy to be scary.

I think there are actually a lot of good games you might like for the 3DS.

If you like Street Fighter, there is actually is a version of Street Fighter IV on the 3DS, if you just like fighters in general there's also Tekken 3D Prime Edition or Dead or Alive Dimensions. There's also Resident Evil Revelations and Metal Gear Solid 3 too, both of which are pretty fun.

If you're into old school games, you can download a bunch of NES and Gameboy games off the 3DS shop. If you liked N64 games there's also the remakes of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Star Fox 64 which are both pretty amazing, or even if you don't like N64 games those are both pretty good. There's also a new Mario Kart which is pretty fun.

Kid Icarus and Monster Hunter 3G.
There is also The Legend of Zelda OoT 3D if you didn't play the original. Super Mario Land 3D.
Star Fox remake. Was Fire Emblame released? I didn't follow the news.

Oh, I should also mention, there's some brilliant stuff on the E-Shop, so don't miss out on that. Really dug Pullblox, it's a rather neat puzzler, if you're into that kind of stuff.

I found Wario Land 1 in the E-shop, made my day. I remember that game when I had it on my old-size-of-a-brick-Gameboy. I played it all the time.

OT: Metal Gear Solid 3 is on the 3DS, in case you like the Metal Gear games, and as mentioned above, Super Street Fighter 4 is on the 3DS as well.

Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor: Overclocked.

Basically, Devil Survivor from the first NDS + voice acting (drooool) + 8th day expanding on previous endings based on your choices.

Ok, this sounds pretty good. If i can get old games, that will make it all worth while. My room mate has been having issues downloading stuff to his PS3 because of our location, but this is def something i want to look into.

Kid Icarus Uprising is damn good. I was genuinely surprised.
It has shockingly good multiplayer and very funny writing in its main storyline. The single player gameplay can get repetitive at times, but the production quality is rather high and it's still rather fun overall.

Combined with my Ambassador titles (which I admit are just ports), it finally justified my purchase. Though they are still charging 5+ bucks a pop for old NES/SNES/GB titles...

As for other titles, well, I hope you like the usual mix of Mario games and Remakes/Ports of older titles because that's what comprises most of the AAA lineup currently. Definitely shop around and try to find gameplay videos for any title first.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
Resident Evil Revelations
Dead or Alive Dimensions
Kid Icarus Uprising
Cave Story 3D
Super Mario 3D Land
Mario Kart 7
Star Fox 64 3D
Tales of the Abyss 3D

I would suggest keeping an eye out for
Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance
Luigi's Mansion 2
the new Zelda
the new Super Smash Brothers
the new Metroid
