I judge their competence also on their ability to program for other systems besides the PC and 360.
I think that's ridiculous, to be honest. BioWare hasn't done anything for the PS3 or the Wii, I suppose they're in the "minor leagues" too? There are tons of developers that are similar to this.

It's fun I guess, some of the puzzles are a little hard but it's nice to use your noggin a bit. But ultimatley the fun I had doesn't distract from the faults, like the dumb AI. And the fact that the gunfights are pretty boring and that the story is confusing and improperly handled. I say it is by no means bad, it is quite decent but I wouldn't say it's AMAZING. Worth praise for sure but not the insane level of praise it gets these days. I can see why people like it, i just can't see why people worship it and kiss the ground that Valve walks on because they made it. I mean I liked the Vortigaunts and Alyx Vance but other than that it wasn't the most amazing shooter I've ever played. My own opinion at least, I can see how it's fun but I didn't think it was the greatest thing ever, but I respect the opinons of those who loved it.

I feel somewhat similar. Personally i found there to be of a decent level of enjoyment, but i, just personally didn't find it excellent or superb. If you're into FPS's, then i suppose it's one of the better ones. Here's how i felt about the game. The pro's were; excellent physics engine that wasn't too buggy, great mod community, nice graphics that could still run on medium-end pc's (unlike other PC FPS's that slaughter your machine), some nice cinematic moments, decent guns etc. I found the con's to be; weak story, vehicle control didn't feel the smoothest, no ironsights, of decent length but still not quite as long as the original, friendly AI particularly in the Strider levels was pretty weak, very linear (though i suppose that's part of the formula, like a COD game), i don't find the silent protagonist thing particularly interesting etc.

My favourite vehicle section ever is the airboat level in HL2. Such a fucking pity that Ravenholme, one of the most hated levels in the entire Half-Life series coming second to Elevator Zombies in HL2 Episode 1, came after it. It's had some of the best vehicle sections I've ever seen in a game.

The rest of Half-Life 2 though wasn't anywhere as good as Half-Life 1 but it was still a fun experience and anybody who hates it is an idiot and must be shot, that's fact not opinion. Episode 1 and 2 were smegging awesome if you're into Half-Life already.

Nova Prospekt, the airboat level and the jeep level were all awesome parts of Half-life 2 and it had superb story telling and as Razorback0z said, the level of detail in the scenery at the highest settings is phenomenal.

I have yet to see 1 pure FPS game that rivals HL2. And Fallout 3 can't be compared to it, because it's not a pure FPS, and thus doesn't really focus solely on the FPS bit.
I see the Halo trilogy as a good rival to HL2. In fact, I prefer it.

Better vehicles, better story, better characters, and better weapons.

I'm sorry, but I can't find any other reason why HL2 doesn't draw me in. And as I said 2007 was a turning point in gaming for me, HL2 is a 2004 game.

It's a great game, but I've always like Halo more.

Any sapient being can see that HL2 was influenced greatly by Halo: CE, just mentioning.

Is there still room in that flame-proof bunker?

The reason it is so good is that it is still relevent.

No one has so much as mentioned killzone 2 in a post since about a week after its release, as I predicted. I likewise have not heard anything about any other shooters more than a week after their release.

Except for:

Half life 2,
team fortress 2,
left 4 dead and left 5 dead,

and halo? and that one is mostly in derision.

Great games have staying power, and that is why you see super metroid in the top 10 games of all times, and not killzone 2 (to belabour a point)

Theres other shooters out there, many of them are successful, some of them a lot of fun and really great...

but none of them TRULY compare to half life.

It was gushed over when it came out and rightly so. It fires on all cylinders - gameplay, graphics, story, music, atmosphere. I still jones to play it today.

RARG!

BUNKER!? I HAVE BUNKER BUSTER!

*Aims the laser at the anti-flame bunker*

I just got off playing HL2 earlier tonight for the 360 and I was blown away. Playing it on a 52 inch LCD TV made my eyes orgasm in delight. While I had to go through Ravenholme I enjoyed fighting the Combine along the coast in what is possibly one of the best vehicle sections in an FPS I have played. I was happily surprised when I found my enemies actually attempting to flank me, surprise me, and creep up behind me. Compare this to a title such as Halo, the enemies there just stand around waiting for you to put a round in their skulls.

The thing I liked about Half Life as a concept are the variety of every single life in its universe. I loved the uniqueness of headcrabs (back in the days). I liked the concept of the Combine Advisors and the simple, yet effective form of the Striders.

In concept, I liked Half Life 2. Hell, I even gave FPS a chance in my playtime (i get nauseous in what i would like to call "doom 2" syndrome) just because of the Orange Box.

Yeah I agree, Half-Life 2 is actually the best game I have ever played. I don't use that term lightly as i've played a lot of games, especially first person shooters. It's not about the graphics for me though - they're good and they have a better artistic quality than most games, but are far surpassed technically by newer games.

People keep saying the story in HL2 was weak. I'd like to know why they thought so. Personally, I was absorbed by it. The characters in that game mattered to me when I played, and I relished any chance I had to run with Barney, or Alex, or just to run into Kleiner of Eli. And of course, the ever-present mystery of the G-Man has kept me interested in HL even after waiting this long for Episode 3.

What I liked most about HL2 was how fully realized the game-world was. Not touching on the plot, I could see how much thought went into just how Earth would change when aliens from another dimension take over. The environmental impact of introducing Antlions into the Earth's ecosystem, with no natural predators save humans, was nicely detailed. The Combine's system of control over humanity was also nicely fleshed out.

What was best about all of the above was that Valve stuck to the "show, don't tell" principle. No intro movie or speech gives you the details on how Earth has changed. Everything is done via exposition, whether it's the newspaper article pinned to Kleiner's wall, random snippets of conversation between NPCs, or just details fitted into the background scenery. Which means you're free to ignore it if you don't care, but it's always there to enjoy for people who pay attention to these details.

Not this topic again.

It was awsome, the technology is better now (loading screens fail etc) it still looks very good compared to other games from its gen. its still good but for a pure FPS experience its outdated. still much worth playing.

They're both two completely different games that do different things to eachother. Half-Life 2 focuses more on storytelling and it was innovative for it's time (physics that was GOOD, amazing graphics for 2004 etc) as well as scenery and it's epic vehicle sections more than it does it's gunplay and violence, which're both still there it's just Halo was better at them, and it's actually possible for you to DIE on the normal settings which is surprising because I'd gone through Halo when I was still interested (Before they released Halo 2 and it sucked harder than a vacuum cleaner) on Normal and I'd only died once, to my own grenades... Although, most of my deaths in Half-Life 2 are attributed to Ravenholme (I FUCKING HATED THAT LEVEL) and the part in the mines shortly after that.

The only real similarities I can see in HL2 and Halo is the shields, although they don't recharge in HL2 and you instead need to find energy dispensers in walls, oh and you can actually die when you have your shields on from enemy gunfire, as well as the fact they're both FPSes with guns and things exploding.

Seriously, haven't we passed the fucking "LOLOLOL HALF LIFE VERSUS HALO" stage and moved onto "PROTOTYPE VS INFAMOUS ROFL ROFL ROFL" era in Escapist history?

Oh, and Halo didn't have better vehicles (in singleplayer), characters or story. The vehicle sections weren't anywhere near as good as Half-Life 2's were, in multiplayer they were pretty fun though but we can't compare multiplayer since Half-Life 2 is a singleplayer game if you don't include HL2:DM which didn't even use vehicles as far as I know. Halo's story telling was pretty good, not as good as Half-life 2's was, Halo 2/3 killed that down to average and the storyline was... well, aliens and humans are beating eachother up because... they disagree on something?

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Halo: CE I was just very disappointed with the sequels.

edit: I didn't like HL2:DM either.

Is there enough room behind there for me? I hope so after you ninja'ed me and all.
