Just in case portal 2 sucks...

ive been seeing more and more hype every day about portal 2, increasing exponentially. that concerns me. as our enlightened leader Yahtzee once suggested, the more hype builds up towards a game, the more we should be suspicious.

i wasnt very deep in the game community until portal came out, but im guessing the first thing YOU guys heard about it was from someone you knew. conversation. i certainly noticed a total of 0 advertisements before a close buddy pulled up one, simple website. after the game came out.

i know they want us to be excited about portal 2, and i certainly am... its just, there seems to be a big difference in advertising approach this time around. they seem absolutely confident that whatever is new, we will love. and i admire that confidence. because if it comes from a true place, we have found one of those rare super-brilliant companies started by Bob Dobbs retrospectively after he gained enlightenment and time travel powers.

but i digress.

how awesome was star wars at one point? think back, waaaay back to before those original 3 movies were altered with updated CGI. not the most recent update, i mean the VERY FIRST "specially remastered" thingimabobs. before they first thought it would be cool if we changed Han Solo to more of a decent and peaceful fellow, who shot Greedo in self-defense only.

how awesome was star wars at one point?

now how awesome is it? 3 horrible prequels and having to pretty much re-edit the original trilogy to make it all make sense. and ONLY putting out the original 3 with the heavy re-edit.

its like falling in love with a beautiful farm girl, than the father says we have to also have to take care of her "special" sister. and let that sister dress up and do make up for the beautiful sister. with mud. and bed them both. and the special sister has rabies. sorry, this is a bit tangental. point is i'd rather not get my heart broken.

valve, please dont pull a lucas on us. dont pull a Wachowski brothers on us either, i liked the first matrix.

and i want all of you to remember how absolutely perfect that little, simple, 2-3 hour game was and is.

just in case its sequel makes us think we are just being nostalgic.

am i worrying for nothing? :(

PLEASE, DEVELOPERS, PROTECT YOUR I.P. FROM INDIGO PROPHECY SYNDROME!

really, your going down this road huh?

okay, well this is valve were talking about, so i think your worrying is for nothing.

stop letting people tell you what to think, every single one of your 'opinions' is just the general flow of internet likes/ dislikes.

besides, they must have sunk millions and millions of dollars into portal 2, why wouldnt they advertise it as much as possible. at least were not dealing with EA who WILL blow things out of proportion to make an extra buck (i believe is the term).

Portal was more of the test, this will be a full game.

Honestly, I think you're worrying over noting.

And if all else fails, fon;t bother bying it. You want to only remember the first, just stick with the first then.

Well I'm not all that hyped for Portal 2 to be honest, so I'll probably enjoy it. It's strange how it hasn't really gotten me very excited.

Now Skyrim, on the other hand....

What do you mean our? I want no part in your little arse kissing cult. If you are happy to have your head so close to Yahtzees arse feel free, but don't be talking for people who still have their own voices.

OT: To many people are worrying for nothing, Valves track record is amazing. Why is length something that people keep raging on? Yeah the first game was short, you want this one to be just as short? Even though every time another game comes out with only a few hours of campaign everyone screams for blood. Its a sequel it is going to take and build and expand on what was in the first, like sequels are supposed to, to crack open aperture science like they are talking about would not be possible if only given a few hours, or at least would be very forced and cramped.

At least Valve is doing their own marketing. If EA was doing it, there'd be internet pop-ups on every website saying "The cake is a lie". They'd probably set up a contest where you win by baking a cake and throwing it at random bystanders.

I'm not insanely excided about Portal 2...in fact, I probably won't even buy it until the Gears 3 beta is over.

But, when I do pick it up, I'll be happy to hear GLaDOS and her pitch black humor once again.

Star Wars is not really all that awesome. Seriously. I watched those when I was a kid, and yes, as a child those things were awesome. Now when I watch them nostalgia clouds my judgement so badly that I just can't see the bad in them very often. But it's there. On occasion, when whiny Luke complains about getting power converters, or when Princess Leia drops in and out of whatever accent she's trying to affect, I cringe a little bit.

I'm not saying they were awful, I'm just saying they aren't as awesome as all that, and I can totally understand young people thinking the Prequelsequels are pretty good too.

As for Portal 2, I'm sure people who never got around to playing Portal will think it's a hoot. I suspect I will enjoy it. It's a puzzle game. It's not got some super deep story they can fuck up, character development that will annoy the shit out of me, or plot twists I can see coming a mile away. It would be kind of hard to fuck up what is in essence, a clever puzzle game.

If it sucks it'd be disappointing but I can't say my life would be affected in any significant way, I personally have high hopes for it because innovative puzzle games are rare enough as it is never mind ones with writing as good as the first Portal.

I'm not expecting Portal 2 to be that great. The first game was fun, certainly good enough that I'm getting Portal 2. But I never really understood all the hype. Half the time it feels like people only really liked it because of the end-song and the whole "The Cake is a Lie" nonsense.

Like, I genuinely believe that if Portal 2 doesn't have a bitchin' end song and near-constant references to cake, people will kill it.

I'm not very hyped out Portal 2, really.

The Co-Op feature looks (To put it short) awful, and it just looks like a sell-out so Valve can roll 'round in money like an American Scroodge McDuck.

At least Valve's doing their own marketing.

You know, its difficult to form an argument when using two completely unrelated instances.

Portal and its one sequel (produced by writers far more talented than George Lucas - and as much as I love Star Wars, that's not difficult) vs. Star Wars and its near-40 years of existence?

There's no point of comparison.

I find it hard to believe that we're all so incapable of taking a slightly more objective view of things. If you're saying, "the hype will ruin it", then its your own fault. I mean come on, I grew out of that when I was 13.

Yeah, stop making posts at all, theres no other way!
On topic: There are rarely any sequals that are good, but there are some. I personally dont think this will be as good and original as the first one, but I certainly hope so...

The first Portal was a pack in, Valve thought it was a neat project so they threw it in the Orange Box. To their and everyone else's surprise it stole the hearts of many and won an absurd amount of awards.

Valve now knows that they have something special on their hands and they are marketing it because they've actually put a lot of money into development and want to maximize the profit they'll be receiving because it's now solely based on Portals merits.

I'll probably be picking it up, not because I love Portal (I've only played about a half hour of the original) but because my gf likes it and I figure it's something we could play together. She hates playing platformers with me >.>

I didn't really enjoy Portal that much. That's not surprising, though, as I just don't like the first person perspective in games. I may pick it up way down the line if it's really cheap.

The OP seems to be taking the "It's popular, it could very well suck" theory, which I suppose is legitimate. My theory is that I have no reason to be any more hyped about Portal 2 than I do Resident Evil 6 unless I've played both, and Portal 2 turns out to be more fun.

This may be Valve we're talking about, but even they [http://store.steampowered.com/app/500/] make mistakes [http://store.steampowered.com/app/550/].

I stopped reading after you called Yahtzee "enlightened".

But seriously, Portal 2 is going to be fucking immense.

I'm not hyped for portal 2, I'll probably wait a few months after the release date to buy it. IMO Portal was a game that came out of nowhere and by that I mean that Valve tagged it along with Orange Box, thus not really expecting it to do all that well to deserve its own release. Luckily for them people fell in love with it, I liked the first one but I don't see why everyone harps on about it.

LALALALALALALA! I CANT HERE YOU!

Portal 2 will descend from heaven carried upon the backs of Jesus and Chuck Norris. It will radiate a force of awesome so strong it'll cure aids and cancer across the world.

It'll also be an incredibly epic game, with science!
