All I expect of Portal 2 is a few laughs and a bunch of Portal-related puzzles.

Considering what I saw at PAX East, it's already surpassed my expectations.

I'm not hyped for buying it, but I'm sure it'll be well worth my money.

I'm not hyped for portal 2, I'll probably wait a few months after the release date to buy it. IMO Portal was a game that came out of nowhere and by that I mean that Valve tagged it along with Orange Box, thus not really expecting it to do all that well to deserve its own release. Luckily for them people fell in love with it, I liked the first one but I don't see why everyone harps on about it.
They 'tagged it along with the Orange Box' because they were testing it to see how people would react and weren't sure how well it would do, not because they weren't expecting much.

OT: I understand what your saying and I have had this thought recently but I'm still really hyped for it's release and have it on pre-order and can't wait!

The OP seems to be taking the "It's popular, it could very well suck" theory, which I suppose is legitimate. My theory is that I have no reason to be any more hyped about Portal 2 than I do Resident Evil 6 unless I've played both, and Portal 2 turns out to be more fun.

This may be Valve we're talking about, but even they [http://store.steampowered.com/app/500/] make mistakes [http://store.steampowered.com/app/550/].
If making two very solid video games is a mistake then more companies need to fuck up.

@ OP: Have you watched any of the trailers / advertisements with Cave Johnson? I don't see how you could watch those and not believe the game will be awesome.

I'm not sure where all these, "portal will probably suck" posts are coming from.

its like falling in love with a beautiful farm girl, than the father says we have to also have to take care of her "special" sister. and let that sister dress up and do make up for the beautiful sister. with mud. and bed them both. and the special sister has rabies. sorry, this is a bit tangental. point is i'd rather not get my heart broken.
I.....what is.....HUh? What the fuck, man? Are your analogies always this messed up......and hilarious XD.

OT: I'm not uber excited like I am for Mass Effect 3. I think it's going to be a stellar game, though. As in one for the History books...

Honestly, hype doesn't make a bad game, it just makes the game seem less great if it doesn't meet expectations or surpass them.

Just realized something, I preordered this, and for whatever reason games I seem to preorder always turn out bad or mediocre, let's hope my curse doesn't ruin it for everybody.

i totally agree with this. i love Valve, i love Portal, and i'm still sure that Portal 2 will be good. but i am really getting sick of some of the stuff Valve and their representatives have been spouting about this game. i seriously think they need to STFU, keep making their funny commercials, and give us the game.

Yes, how dare a company make commercials to advertise their product. The nerve of VALVe. Their commercials are very watchable... I actually rewound to watch one last night.

glad to see you didn't bother to read what i wrote. i said they should keep making the commercials. what they need to STOP doing is their fucking stupid PR statements, like "Portal 2 is the most innovative game EVAR!"

I read what you wrote, but I haven't seen any "fucking stupid PR statements" from VALVe so I assumed you could only be talking about the commercials.

I'm still not sure why everyone is so inclined to hate PORTAL 2 before it's even released. Can we wait until it's released before we start hating on it because it's popular?

Frankly, I'd be MUCH more worried about Skyrim. Valve is the Pixar of game develoupers (if Pixar only released a movie every 3 years or so, but my point remains valid), I am near 100% confident in their ability to make a sequel that surpasses the origenal by a wide margin.

Now on the other hand, I'm much less confident the new Elder Scrolls will be up to snuff. It's been a looooong time since Oblivian, and Bethesda doesn't exactly have the same track record as Valve.

So I don't know.

Also, capitalization... learn it.

If Portal 1 was a complete game I could at least kind of see why people are worried... but it was like a two hour play through, as awesome as it was. I don't see how they could possibly not suprass it, to be honest.

Co-Op 2x+ the length of the original = hell yes
Single 2x+ the length of the original = hell yes
Humor seems up to par = hell yes
Additional gameplay mechanics = hell yes

Etc.

That was what I was trying to convey but turns out I wasn't clear enough, *apologizes* weren't expecting much in terms of consumer reaction so throwing it in with Orange Box gave people a 'free' game they could also try. The reason I say free is because I bought Orange Box for Half Life, I'm assuming other people bought it for that same reason. I'm talking about consoles here I'm not sure how they released it on PC.

This is a very big assumption but I see it being similar to the case where loads of people bought Crackdown for the Halo 3 beta and then realised that crackdown was actually a whole lot of fun.

I'd be amazed if anyone originally bought the Orange Box for Portal until it became popular. I bought the Orange Box for TF2 but I also enjoyed HL and Portal.
