Almost all online games have assholes who beat down the noobies. MOBA's seem to have the worst reputation, and my first experiences with Dota 2 has been the opposite. Sure, there's the odd dick here and there, but of the 50 games I've played, I've had great teammates and opponents. Even if I've fed the other team with Centaur (0-17-10 and somehow still won), I still get encouragement. Sure, I'm a quick learner and usually listen to advice, but I expected starting Dota to be a hellish time. The playerbase isn't any worse than other online games, and is a lot better than games like Battlefield 3/4 (my go to shooters) and CoD Whatever. So what gives? Has the shitty reputation lost its truth over time or am I just super lucky/oblivious?

You're just lucky. I'm a firm believer that MOBAs aren't any worse than other games, that all games are equally guilty. But my beliefes aside, you will run into a lot of angry people. If you are as you describe, someone who listens to advice andlearns pretty quick, you'll avoid a lot of the flak, but some people will rage anyway.
So welcome to dota, it's a great and awful game. Keep at it and the game can eaisly give thousands of hours of fun for as little money as you want to put in.
And if you'd like some more advice: Focus on dying less. Centaur is one of (if not the most) tanky heroes in the game. If you work on good positioning and map awareness you should greatly improve as far as that goes. And not only is avoiding death a great way to avoid your team raging at you, it is a great first step in improving your game. So positioning and map awareness, great things to work on to start with.
Check out Purge on youtube, really good videos to watch for new players, and he is casting a lot of TI specificly for newer players. Good Luck.

Agreed. I don't play anymore, but back when I did (about 5 month ago), arseholes were an exception rather than the rule. Most games went by with hardly anything being said, people focused on the game and communicating with map pings. Even if an argument did break out, most of the other players would try to defuse the situation.
My experiences with LoL were somewhat worse, but still bearable. It became a lot better once I realized how great the Ignore button was...

It's a mix if sheer luck and the fact you're low-leveled. At this point, you're being paired with people your level. So they don't mind mistakes. Once you reach higher levels, the toxic players start to arise. I can only use league terms here, but you should get them. Miss one Stun, report. Miss one pull, report. Forget to ping, report. Forget to not die, report. I can't say how late game DOTA is, but LoL is not fun when you get higher level. Nothing but toxic, dicks who complain about their team, but suck just as much as them. A common saying is "I love League of Legends, but I hate playing it."
I've met some super pricks but most of the time no one says a peep.

It's basically just like any other online community. I'm not gonna pretend the game is some kind of safe haven, but it's not the cesspool others make it out to be either. I think you just need to get over the newbie hump. Once you're playing with people who have put in a lot of time in the game, you don't encounter many gamer-ruiners. There will always be jerks, but the mute button is a quick and easy solution. But I can't remember the last time I encountered a griefer or an intentional feeder or someone who actively tried to ruin a game. And I play a shitload of Dota, so that's about as large a sample size as a single person can have.
I've played LoL since OB and have about 4k-5k games under my belt. Maybe my experience is just wildly different from everyone else's on the internet or I just don't notice it so much but I really don't experience that much negativity in LoL. The number of people I've considered bad enough to add to my "Ignore" list is about 10 and I rarely have reason to mute anyone. Eve the last few times I've had to use it were for people who were spamming their emotes (/L, /T, /J etc.) and that actually isn't that bad.
I played Dota 2 during its beta and I thought that the community was horrible. Played as often as possible with friends, but I didn't know enough people playing active to fill a team of 5. So we constantly got some dude in our team yelling at us in Russian. One of my friends speaks Russian, so he could translate for us - mostly all of it being insults.
People even complained during my first few matches because of some minor mistakes like buying item x (and of course, not even mentioning the item that would've been correct. Because who would help someone to improve?)
Some times later, I tried LoL. Had some good experiences there, only a few trolls and complaining people. I did play a few dozens of matches and worst thing people called me was smurf, because I already had some MOBA experience and probably played like someone with a smurf account. People were much more friendly and you could almost have a normal conversation with them. But only (according to a friend), because I played to the 'right' times, when troll-kids were already in bed or still at school.

I've personally found the DOTA2 community to be generally better than other online games I've played. There aren't very many griefers or trolls, although there are still plenty of people who rage for no reason. I keep seeing people call for players to be reported because they made a mistake, which is fucking stupid. Not many people have perfect matches.
But on the flipside, I've made a few friends through the game already and I quite often find that there's some banter with the enemy team which makes the competitive aspect far more enjoyable. And on the rare occasions you do get saddled with a rage filled idiot, there's nothing more satisfying than winning the game anyway and saying 'WP team... Except for you, Mirana.
