If you are going to play, play your own way. The people who just do whatever has been pre-determined to be the best build are some of the annoying jerk-bags who made me quit.

Play a shadow to level up the priest. Disc/Holy is for healing. You need shadow to be able to kill stuff at a decent rate to level up.

Yeah, good luck lvling holy/disc priest. Your friends probably told you to be one because they need one, considering there's very few in WoW. That class/spec is a ***** to play.

-Wowhead
-Thottbot
-MMO-Champion

Those are the main three third-person sites that you want to go to regularly.

I notice everyone is missing the all time biggie... worldofwarcraft.com *Gasp*! Yes, it's true, worldofwarcraft.com does have soem good information on its game. For instance, you can go to the class forums and read about the different classes, and advice from other players about how to play that class.
But as to which class you should play, try each out and play what you like. And as for your priest, if you want to make a holy/disc, I suggest you have a friend level with you, preferably a protection warrior or Paladin (tanks) so you can get into a lot of groups for instances when leveling up. Of course, that's a lot more work :)

To be honest i would pick another class if your just starting out. Holy/Disc is fun but unless you know the ins and outs of wow it can be a ***** to lvl. And as for learning how to play, the best way isnt to follow a guide step by step its to try it out first then work on it from there. By all means check guides but play around a bit to find the best way for you, some people might go for speed lvling others like to take their time. But thats up to you. But i will say this Following a guide step by step on how to play a class is a bad idea and it get very boring as well, best and the way thats more fun is to play the ol trial and error way.

But as for the sites you could try the official WoW site forums, theres a forum for each class thats bound to have a lvling guide on there as a sticky. Anyway! Welcome to WoW!

FOR THE HORDE! <3

Edit: Shadow for lvling is fun ^-^ good idea to swap to holy/disc later on

I'd tend to go with WoWWiki [http://www.wowwiki.com/], it's pretty comprehensive and there's a massive newbie guide... which I have to admit was a bit tl;dr for me. But if you feel like learning a bit rather than jumping in blind, have at it.

Oh God don't try to level disc/holy. It's hard enough leveling a shadow priest. Priests are a harsh class to play.

Do yourself a favor, play a bunch of classes and different races, see which you have the most fun with and plat that. It can take a long while to figure out which class fits your play style, making yourself choose one class or another because your friends told you to will just make the game seem like work.

And definitely check out wowhead.com. It has everything.

Yeah, what others have said. You should go Shadow at first, because shadow is about killing things (which you will need to do) and Disc/Holy is healing spec. Lots of people use Disc/Holy for healbotting.
There's one of your first terms too - Healbot. As you can probably guess, it means you do absolutely nothing except heal other players, like a robot programmed to do that one thing (healing) and nothing else. Honestly, it sounds like your friends told you to go disc/holy because they want someone to just heal them all day, and not because they think it'd be a fun class for you to try.
Priests can definitely pump out the damage as shadow, but sometimes there's social pressures that come with it, and some people will refuse to party with you unless you are a disc/holy healbot. If you don't like the idea of being a main healer or being pressured to become one, you may want to think about rolling a class that does not have a heal button at all. I.E. something other than a Druid/Paladin/Priest/Shaman.

yes. even if you're shadow you can still be able to heal well enough to get by.

Get Questhelper. Its a freakin' godsend.
He's right.

Here's the link:
http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/quest-helper.aspx

Download that and extract it to your World of Warcraft\Interface\Addons folder. It'll make questing a whole lot easier.

A similar question to all of you WoW connaiseurs:
I love playing like a sniper in Battlefield games, and would like to do the same in WoW.

So I should go for a Hunter?
Or is a Rogue better for stealthily killing off bad ass monsters from a distance?

Maybe this'll help, but in the Diablo games I really like the Rogue and only use the bow's and their associated spells (multiple arrows, guided arrows etc.).

I also enjoyed playing as a spammer of Hydra's on other playthroughs, but the killing from a distance with arrows is my favorite ('Kiting' in WoW speak?).

Another question: Is it even possible to zoom in with weapons at all? :)

Sorry for being a n00b, but please answer... ^_^
