I can't believe the verdict of this case, what the fuck is wrong with justice?

Edit: This is one of the cases I have been following since day one, and yes, this is the case that got me into being more interested into whether or not the "War in Iraq" was right and what was going on there. Still, I can't believe they actually "let him go" with this, it's almost like a slap on the wrist.

Well, feed him well US tax-payers.

The death penalty is inept and should not be used anymore. I agree with life in prison with no chance of parole.

Seriously, how the hell could you NOT come to a unanimous agreement? I hate my country.

"Jury doesn't reach decision, Soldier get Life without Parole"

Sounds like a decision to me. If they still can't make up their minds, they could ask whoever is in charge of justice in Iraq what the penalty there is for rape and murder.

if he was young black they would have given him the death penalty
No

On topic, I don't know what to think about this. While he is guilty of the actions he committed, he was also clearly suffering from psychological trauma. I hesitate to judge him as war time stress can really mess up a person.

I don't support killing him as the current death penalty creates more controversy and trouble than it is worth. So I guess a life in prison is the best choice. I just wish people wouldn't treat this man so horribly. I don't hate him, I pity him.

Life in prison without parole sounds good to me, as I don't support the death penalty.
Except it bothers me when people sentenced to life in prison without parole still somehow get parole...

The Iraqis wanted to judge him, in their own court. His punishment would have been way different, and well deserved.

I don't agree with the death penalty. Ideally, we'd want to reform them. There are some types of people who can't currently be reformed (psychopaths for example, which make up between 50-80% of prison populations), and prison does a crappy job of reforming people. Still, killing someone bad is more about vengeance than putting someone away - than keeping innocent people from getting hurt.

Vengeance shouldn't have a place in the adult world. We should be more mature than that.

The death penalty actually costs more than life in prison.
Giving him the lethal injection or frying him costs more than feeding and housing him for the rest of his life? Impossible.

Being in prison for life is much worse than a slap on the wrist. It basically means he can never live a normal life. You lose your freedom.

Legal costs, I believe. The lengthy appeal process is far more expensive for the state than housing and feeding.

Yes, because the legal procedures leading up to the death penalty cost large sums of money.

If the death penalty was quick and efficient procedure, then I really wouldn't care about it. I would still like to reserveit for only the worst of the worst. Call me horribly optimistic, but I believe some people in prison can be reformed. This man is one of them.

But this is a problem we will have to solve in the distant future.

This I don't. Murderer AND rapist, two of the crimes with the most reincidence? Not likely.
And I don't see lessening factors, like temporal insanity, use of drugs (admit it, combat shock is far too overused in courts these days to be taken seriously anymore), etc.
So, this guy was completely aware of what he was doing. Were he in Irak, he would be beheaded at the very least.
