That's right. The beta script of Katawa shoujo was found mere days ago.

User reports have noted that many routes were all around sub-par compaired to their finished conterparts, understandibly.

All exept one, that is. Shizune Hakamichi's finished route was regarded with an all-around 'meh' for it's slice-of-life aspects.

If you were one of those 'meh'ers, have no fear! Shizune Hakamichi's beta route would be much more interesting to you!

First two acts are pretty similar, other than the fact that you get a few options, some things happen in different order, Hideaki's character is completely changed but he's still not too important, I think there's some more Kenji ranting, etc.

Misha is more obviously depressed earlier in the game. She talks to Hisao about the same stuff as the normal route pretty much, but near the end of Act 3 it switches to Misha's perspective. Depressing internal monologue about how she was bullied in school, all of her old friends forgot her, Shizune will probably leave her behind, it's impossible for her to ever move forward without losing Shizune, etc. She believes she is only a burden on Shizune, and that one day she will also grow to resent Shizune.

Then she stops in front of a moving car and gets hit. She wakes up in the hospital, thinking about how she was never even able to hug Shizune. She puts on a smile to try to cheer up Shizune before passing away.

THAT'S NOT EVEN THE BAD END

Shizune spirals into depression. She reads Misha's journal, where she learns that Misha still loved her and wished she could speak more freely. She reveals that she has been lying and could read lips, and only Hisao knew. She regrets not telling Misha she loved her and that she could have spoken to her without signing.

Then the difference between the good end and the bad end is whether or not Shizune also kills herself. If she does the last scene is pretty much her stretching out her hand from the hospital bed, which Hisao interprets as a wave goodbye, and he just kind of leaves and she dies a few hours later.

As there are many ethical concerns as to it's leaking, I leave it up to you if you want to download it. I'll link to the reddit page.

http://www.reddit.com/r/katawashoujo/comments/vz41y/katawa_shoujo_beta/

So, Discuss. Is this leak a good/bad thing/Is Shizune the only route that improved/Did Shizune's route improve?

UPDATE:
1) They seem to have been in the middle in the process of altering the designs for Emi and Yuuko. The "emicas" (Emi in casual clothes) sprites are all updated, but only a few of the sprites for her school and gym uniforms were, and the CGs of her still show the old design. Yuuko has not yet been updated at all. Interestingly, Meiko -Emi's mom- has sprites included in Emi's old style; apparently she got updated at some point along this process, but that had not yet happened here.

2) The music which corresponds to the demo was still in place (the "GeoCities music" that TC mentions): either the piano player had not yet signed on or had only just started. There were a few other tracks that didn't make it to release, like the cello performance of Sarabande. Some other tracks, like Innocence, are completely absent.

3) The "Disable adult content" feature is already present in the engine, as are graphics to go with it. Some (myself included) have theorized that the block was a last-minute addition, but this would seem to prove that that wasn't the case.

4) Text for the H-scenes is present (though drastically different from the final release), but there are no graphics of any kind for them. Was drawing left to the last minute to prevent leaks?

5) The animated "super-CGs" of Lilly, Hanako, and Hisao in the tea room seem to have been done with a couple of "base CGs" containing no facial features, combined with transparent overlays allowing for a variety of expressions. The "base CGs" look REALLY CREEPY.

6) The title cards for the acts are totally different. It's worth noting that Hanako's title cards get increasingly ominous as her path (which, remember, was until very recently a trap) continues. There is no "hanatrue" title card, and Lilly's Act 2 and Act 4 title cards appear to be the same. I suspect that the hanatrue card was taken out before this build, but this doesn't explain the thing with Lilly's title cards.

7) There are backgrounds for locations that got cut, including dorm rooms for all of the major characters (even Kenji).

8) There's a movie of a heart beating in its owner's chest, and it seems to be live-action rather than animated. It looks like Hisao was intended to have some kind of nightmare at some point, and this video was to have been part of that.

9) Almost every script has at least two versions: the *.rpy version and the *.rpy.bak version, the latter of which is several months older. In most cases, the differences between the two versions are minor, but Hanako underwent major revisions.

10) Minor change for Lilly's design: she apparently used to wear a yellow nightgown instead of the navy blue pajamas seen in the release. Sprites for this are NOT included; the only remnant of that design by this time is a mention or two in the text.

11) Earlier versions of the game contained more anime-isms than later ones. By this time all actual Japanese had been taken out, but although even the final version still feels a bit like a translation, the beta feels much more like one. If code comments are any indication, at least some of the devs wanted to keep the anime-isms intact and in fanboy-Japanese.

12) Lilly is much more of a Mary Sue in the beta. She also still has the cello, but the dog is in the process of being written out. Any graphics that might have existed for the dog are gone, but there are still a few mentions in the text, and the devs don't seem to have settled yet on exactly how she gets around without the dog.

For those of you not wanting to play to find out information, Hanako's endings are as follows:

Looks like there's a lot of missing text, but it seems Hisao had another heart attack, and Hanako saved him with CPR. Hisao wakes up in the hospital with broken ribs, and they plan to put a pacemaker in. Hanako is in a locked facility for mental patients. The doctors tell Hisao about how Hanako ran from a boy who confessed to her in middle school, and when the boy chased her he got hit by a car and died. I'm not sure what happened when Hisao had the heart attack, but apparently he was also chasing Hanako.

You can choose to disobey the doctors' orders to not see Hanako. Hisao and Lilly go to her room and find her mumbling "I killed them all." She sees Hisao and freaks out and shoves him in the chest and he starts puking blood and dies.

If you wait, Hanako visits you after the pacemaker is put in and the doctors allow her to leave. Everyone goes home but Hanako is unresponsive and just stares with her head down. Over the next few days, Hanako continues to act all zombie-like, barely conversing even with Lilly. Eventually she is in Hisao's room, and asks him why he loves her. Hisao can't really answer immediately, and Hanako claims that he wants her body and begins to undress, and lays down emotionless on Hisao's bed. You can choose to have sex with her or tell her to get dress.

If you choose sex, as soon as you penetrate her she freaks out about how Hisao really does only want her body. Hisao stands up quickly in shock, trips because of the pants around his ankles, and breaks his neck on the desk. He is paralyzed, and dies right after Hanako calls him disgusting.

If you tell her to get dressed, she does and leaves your room in tears. Hisao realizes that Hanako isn't the same person anymore and goes into her room and tears it apart looking for her pills. He flushes them down the toilet. The next morning, Hanako acts normal, claiming that it feels like the fog has been lifted from her mind. Hisao excitedly invites her on a date. They go to a park or something where they had their first kiss. Towards the end of the date, Hanako acts more depressed than usual. She says she's sick so she wants to take the subway home instead of walking. At the subway, she talks about how all she ever does is hurt and kill people, and that she doesn't want to hurt people anymore. She throws herself in front of the train.

EDIT: Right so, this makes me sound a little stupid for stirring all this up, but APPARENTLY a second script was found by a GameFAQ user.

This second script turned on a switch activated by playing though Hanako's path once. Once you did that, about halfway down Lily's path you could jump to Hanako's.

As it stands, I can't get the thing to work right on my machine (Linux), but I've been working to decipher the scripts. Of note is that there seem to be two different decision trees ("imachine" and "old_imachine"), and while imachine seems to be the one people have been playing, old_imachine has its own points of interest. If this thing is real, then it seems to have been a snapshot of a time when they were switching from the old_imachine structure to imachine, and they'd taken out many of the old_imachine scripts but not all of them.

For example, you can't access Hanako's fourth ending -her true ending- through imachine.

The script for the last part of Hanako's true ending (the "hanatrue" path) remains in the text files. The trick is that in old_imachine, you could never get it on Hanako's path: going directly to that path would get you a bad ending. But you do have to go through Hanako's path at least once first, because a certain scene in Hanako's path triggers a switch that stays with you through subsequent playthroughs. This switch will let you jump into Hanako's path from the middle of Lilly's path, and this is how you get Hanako's true ending. And, oh yeah, she's pregnant.

It was dummied out before the beta, but remnants -including the script for the last part of the ending, and a decision tree that would have gotten you there- weren't removed from the package. They were still cleaning it up.

Incidentally, Hanako's pregnancy isn't actually presented as a bad or depressing thing. You don't find out until literally the very last line, and at that time there's a clear path to an ever-after with these two. In fact, she seems to be happy about it (you never see Hisao's reaction).

Reports have been sketchy, but it seems that would allow you to get the 'True' Ending. Where she gets pregnant.

I implore other downloaders to share their insights.

HOLY SHIT THATS DARK, I know they made alot of changes to Hanako's story but I didn't know they had changed THAT much! I don't like this way though as it seems very unrealistic for a game that is mainly grounded in reality and makes it sound like School Days (look it up) glad they changed it as Hanako's story was my favourite path!

I think Shizune's path would of been so much better if they went with the original idea, that sounds awesome and depressing, Shizune's final route was average at best and these changes cold of made shizune's route the best in the game.

Well...I...uh...wow...just wow, tragedy for tragedies sake much? The Hanako endings in particular are just awful, I can handle some darkness in games and sad events can add real wight to a story but this just makes it seem like at one point the whole game was nothing but hopeless soul crushing despair from the third act on, and I prefer the endings in the finished product by a massive margin.

Holy freaking crapballs that's dark. Both Hanako's and Shizune's.

Makes me appreciate the stories and endings of both characters that we got much, much more.

I had a discussion over in the KS group about me trying to justify Shizune's changes. I'll...make an attempt at playing devil's advocate for Hanako.

For the bad end: It's not like even the finished game will shy away from doing something extreme if you screw things up.

"Good" end: Well, if she honestly believes she was to blame for the fire that killed her family (Which she may have, you know), combined with the fact that Hisao isn't exactly the smartest interpreter of emotions, her fate would at least be plausible.

I thought dating sims were like... happy? Haven't played it myself, but from what I understand there's some bad stuff in mid-game and the bad ends are usually depressing but... jesus damn.

I don't know what's going on, but I'm excited. What is this, a comic?
...No. It's the original game files and their scripts for the girls.

They're vastly different from the finished game.

Wait, I think I may have read a synopsis for this before...
Is this the one where the protagonist can get one of the girls pregnant and she ends up hacksawing his head off?

The thing that disturbs me the most is that people are actually saying that they prefer the old Shizune route to the finished game! Seriously, how fucking dark do you want the game to be?! Yeah, Shizune's route was relatively low on romantic content, but at least it's endings made sense in the context of the characters and their motivations. The very idea that Shizune would do something like THAT is fucking ridiculous!

What's next, an Emi route where she snaps and murders Hisao? A Lilly route where she cheats on Hisao? A Rin route where she gets depressed and kills herself? (lol, oh wait)

Yeah

And then its revealed that the girl was never pregnant and was lying to get the guy she wanted.

Oy, those are really dark. Needlessly so, almost. T_T I'm glad they altered them, at least. Dunno what I would have done if those characters had died as I was reading. Holy hell would I feel responsible for that.

Right, well, This is much easier than justifying Hanako's beta route.

Misha already looked ready to off herself in the released game when she told Hisao about her feelings for Shizune. Put that on top of a bullied backstory and a presumably less seen and thus interacted with Misha, and you have a motivation to end all the pain.

Shizune's bad end, as I'm pretty sure it's the same choice that sets the endings off, is already very emotionally damaging for Shizune. As I'm told she dies of dehydration in her bad ending, so it could be that she decided to just...stop.
