I will actually hold out some hope for this movie because of the fact that Keanu Reeves plays all of his characters similarly to Skipe and if he is a fan of the source material, I think he will try hard to live up to it.

Also, and this is just my own crazy idea, what if they forget about Vicious and just make it one of the random bounties that they went after in the series? That way the movie wouldn't feel so rushed by trying to explain the entire Spike/Vicious backstory.

I guess I'll go make some torches and sharpen my pitchfork. Off course, the movie might turn out to be not (entirely) bad, but that's as likely as me sprouting an extra arse. If it does turn out 'good', Hollywood will probably fold up in itself, because it just proved a natural law wrong.

You know what law I mean, that anything that's good as a comic, manga, cartoon or anime will never work in live action. Seriously, don't they teach you kids anything during physics these days?

Another problem is that I just KNOW some of the people working on it are thinking "This is a cartoon, let's make it cartoony!" It wouldn't surprise me if they insert fart-jokes and a plotline so thin you could use it to cut razors in half.

Since I'm here early I'll make my goddamn statement.

This movie has a 99% chance of sucking, Anime was NEVER meant to be turned into live action and the fact that they have cast an unpopular actor in the key role (there are FAR worse choices for Spike than Keanu, they could have cast Dane Cook, for example) doesn't mean he will ruin the movie. No, this movie will probably suck for reasons entirely independant of Keanu's casting, and hey, at least he likes the goddamn material, but that didn't save Billy Zane in "The Phantom" and Alec Baldwin in "The Shadow" so it probably won't save Keanu either. Since it's Fox they will likely lowball the budget as much as they can, make it as hip as possible and probably hire that asshat Tim Story to direct it.
While I agree with you on a in depth level, my gut feeling can be described as such:

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

instead of live action, y not make a cg movie like resident evil did, and use keanu reeves likeness, but then again y would you do that even, i hope this movie gets canned, but then again i think the Death Note movies were respectable...was i the only one who saw those?

I'm still crying after seeing that dragonball trailer...what has been seen can't be unseen.
I don't think live action movies should be made for Anime, at all.

Didn't the RE-movie suck ass? :)

I saw the first one, and I think it showed pretty well why this transition shouldn't be made. The series itself isn't that good either, even if the basic premise is clever.

I'm scared someone hold me please....

Also based on some late night otaku conversation I've had with friends I think Bruce Willis would make a good jet. Also if I thought he could pull off the martial arts aspect of spike I would go with Colin Farrell. If you seen him in the movie "In Bruges" you would know what I'm talking about. He can actually act and go between off the wall clever funny to brooding deep pretty easily, something that anyone playing spike would need. Then again this just a fan boy dream here and I'm sure everyone else has their choice for casting.

Oh no!

This is awful news, good old American film industry getting hold of whatever they can get hold of that has a fan base and making it into a film ...

Still can't they find anyone better than Keanu Reeves?

Live action Bebop? Really? Next you'll be telling me they're making a live action Thundercats film. Sigh. [/irony]

...[/tears]

I have no idea what the end product will look like and can't possibly have an opinion about it as such, but, I will anyway. And it's going to be awful.

Me of little faith.

It'll be crap, but it'll sell, and isn't that what our much vaunted capitalism is all about in the end.
It'll sell to who?

True fans of the show will probably be disgusted by it.
People who haven't heard of it will go to other Sci-Fi movies.
The concept is really awesome, but if they implement it poorly (Which is likely), I bet it'll bomb in theaters and only really become a cult classic to those amazed that it was ever created.

That said, I disagree with the casting of this role, and it pains me to see the writing on the wall that such a great show will be doomed to go down in flames because of this.

I admit that most anime live action movies suck. But I saw some good ones (Death Note anyone?) Ok so Death Note doesn't really count in this case since its from Japan, but still. Hopefully this movie isn't a train wreck (oh god I still can't believe what happened to DBZ) but it seems like they are staying true to the anime's roots, that has to count for something. Yeah it probably won't win best movie of the year, but that doesn't mean it has to win worst. If its treated right then this movie could be very good, it can't compare to the anime, but the more people that like the movie, the more likely those that haven't seen the anime will look it up. If we can localize anime with movie that don't suck, maybe, just maybe we can build a huge anime fanbase in the U.S. I mean lets face it, I am not staying up till 1 a.m. just to watch Code Geass on adult swim. The larger the fanbase the more anime we can get. So I hope that this movie is ok, and the producers of anime live action movies takes a page from it. Anyway that's my rant.

Come on, man. Death Note wasn't as much a good movie as it was a good blend of the first few episodes. The presentation style is in complete surrender, with bad methods for exposition, cheesy acting and an overall inability understand the difference between an animated show and an actual movie.

Yes, there were a few effective moments, but the considerable cheesyness of the actors and the script completely removed any tension they tried to build.

And just read the interview with Reeves: He says they are going to make the movie based off the first episode. The b-class writers must be jumping for joy, because they got "vials of red liquid" as a plot simplifying device. Their only regret is that it isn't green.

The way he said it the "main storyline" of the series will be tacked on as an afterthought. What we'll have is a generic action movie on the level of Mission Impossible 2 (if we're lucky)...

the resident evil movies is a different case, that's a videogame to movie transition, anime to movies.... i dont see it fairing as well... but i should have a little more faith after i saw the Death Note movies.... those were good except, they changed some of the story around and dramatically shortened it... the only let down

I dunno, this could be good... maybe? I mean, I read the article and Reeves sounds like he loves the show. I could see him as Spike. As for who else they should get on board, I've got a few ideas. Namely Alfred Molina as Jet, and Megan Fox as Faye.
I humbly submit James Marsters [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0551346/] for the role of Vicious.
I would use him as Spike, fitting don't you think?
