As promoted on the BBC this morning, the co-creator of the 1980s "space trading" game Elite has decided to use Kickstarter to try to fund a complete remake. At time of writing, he's up to £140,000 (out of a target £1,250,000) in one day.

So who actually remembers this game? Any big Elite fans out there?
(It was a bit before my time!)

It looks a pretty poorly done kickstarter. For a £1.25 mil break off point they have literally nothing to show besides a logo and David Braben's word. Which btw is not all that great (anyone know what happened to the outsider? The game he was supposed to be making in place of elite...). The fact that this follows in the wake of star citizen makes the whole thing fishy (tinfoil hat on). It's good that the space sims are seeing a resurgence but this seems to me like a cash grab and nothing more.

Sold!

Could do with a slight name change though, anyone else think "dangerous" is a bit, well... shit?

There's a lot of elite clones out there, not least the up coming X: Rebirth. They'll have to put a lot more on the table than some unbacked promises.

We want to see sub-orbittal flight, gravitational mechanics and all these other things that Elite had but were omitted in it's clones, while retaining the additional features the clones brought but elite lacked (Like X-series ability to build and operate entire trading networks and heavy industry.

Hell, would it kill them to make a space sim that simulates space combat properly? - things could get rather interesting and unique with sensor toggles, orbital mechanics, combat over extreme range (If this sounds dull, Subwar 2050 proves that tense standoff combat in a simulator can work too)

Having backed this project for quite a few bob, I'd suggest moseying over to the Kickstarter page now. We're thirteen updates in, and there is now quite a few videos and lots of concept art up.

I fully agree it was not the best launch ever, but maybe this latest info will persuade you to back it if you had any doubts in the first place.

Ultimately - it's Elite. To gamers of a certain age, that's reason enough to put your money on the table. If you're at all interested in free-roaming space games, I'd suggest having a look at Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen; either might well float your boat.
