Nowadays you may hear adults complaining about "kids these days, with their parties and alcohol and drugs." And for the most part, I agree. Drinking at a party is okay in moderation, people who get sloshed every 3 days disgust me. As for drugs, I have recently quit being a weekend abuser and have been successful in completely weening off of it. My life improved and I saw a general improvement in my studies. Which begs the question, why do kids do these things if they see where this leads them?

At the bus stop today I was shocked to see a young African-American child, no more than 11 ask a group of teenagers for rollies (joint rolling papers), This was disturbing as the kid had the tough as nails attitude to go with it. This has been bothering me all day, What's happened to kids these days?

What I'm asking you escapists is your opinion on my story and your opinion on what is considered acceptable in today's society.

It is a bit surprising when you see 11 year olds already getting into that sort of thing. But modern society allmost encourages it. It's just something easy and makes you feel good, because teenagers like everything instantly.

I don't like kids these days either, and kids these days are kids my age. So it's obviously not just old people being, well, old people. Kids these days are nasty little buggers who need more discipline and less cushioning of the real world.

Kids these days don't have any discipline! Let's bring beatings back, and go totally overboard with them! And while we're at it, let's have a fascist dictatorship opressing everyone who is not me!
I don't want to say that kids and teenagers are perfectly fine nowadays - because they are, indeed, getting slightly worse. I want to say that beating kids is a most extreme measure there is, not something you do every fifteen minutes.

We're not all that stupid.. Okay the majority are.
But the 11 year old is a of a surprise I have to admit, before that, the youngest I knew of would've started at 13. o_O

Yeah me too, and I think a bit of physical discipline is a good thing. Just a little, my mother spanked me when I drew on the walls with my crayons.

First off, congratulations on getting clean. You've just dropped a useless and time/money consuming habit, that will almost unequivocally lead you down the wrong path.

Secondly, i live in Australia, where drinking and gambling is a national past-time. It still confuses me how much gambling is integrated into our society, and how hard it is for people to figure out just what is the right amount to drink. I'm a social drinker mainly - i might have a beer with dinner occasionally - but i dont drink to get shit-faced. I drink to relax and loosen myself up, so i can find the confidence to talk to a complete stranger - something i wouldn't normally do.

However, the youth of today dont have that need anymore. They are already confident - they've had it poured into them by their sycophantic parents, who were led to believe back in the eighties that their children need to be told they are 'special' and 'unique'. Now loaded with the understanding that they are super-cool, these kids congregate, realize that they are all the same, and suddenly and horrifically realize that everybody isn't unique or special.

Cue groups of youths wearing B-boy trousers barely past their arseholes and young girls wearing clothes only a hooker would consider fashionable. Then, to really dull the pain, they drink copious amounts of alchohol and do heaps of drugs, because alcohol numbs the senses and drugs alter reality.

Now you have a heap of fucked up fourteen to eighteen year-olds, high on drugs and booze, with nothing to do but destroy stuff or make a mess, because they have nothing to offer the world except destruction and misery, because they have their minds wired to the fact that they are special and unique and, at that age, untouchable, when in actual fact they have the mental capacity of a four-year old throwing a tantrum because, deep down inside themselves, they can see what they are doing and they hate themselves for it, but because of their brainwashing by their parents, they wont admit that they have a fucked-up attitude on life, and so the cycle goes on until one day the money from their parents run out, some greasy scumbag wants his money paid back either now or in blowjobs, and they come to the sudden result that they have pissed away their childhoods when they should have been working hard to prepare for adulthood, when they can really have a good time because then they know how the world works!!!!!

*takes a deep breath*

...What we need, and i know this is harsh, is another world war, to show kids what true hardship is. What the fuck is a bad attitude going to do when some arsehole who wants you dead, not because of you personally, but because of where you come from? I'll tell you - a kid with a bad attitude, in that situation, would piss his pants and cry for his mother before he shows the balls to fight for whats right, instead of right now.

I have always thought this. I'm the same age as those who are being complained about, and I'm all for voicing my complaints too. It's taken me a long time to find a small contingent of people who are not interested in going out each weekend, at the very least, to get 'pissed'.

Not only is the act of intentionally getting drunk stupid and illogical to me, it's also physically, and even emotionally damaging. I just don't understand why people would do it.

We need to not bullshit around with drugs, tell the hard truth and describe the consequences. The fact that.....people who are not even TEENAGERS yet are doing adult activities is just......disturbing beyond belief. This is too much of a nanny state in the Western world. The hardships others have to go through is what needs to be shown.

As for me, never ever ever ever ever ever ever EVER EVER EVER!!!!!! am I going to participate in drug taking behaviour.

My friend started smoking when she was 8. although she was a ned, so I don't think that really counts.

And "kids today" are getting into drink and drugs for the same reasons you did. You'd be surprised how much history repeats.

Some kids these days are irresponsible. Since the dawn of time there have been irresponsile people. I'm 14 and I've never touched drugs, I've heard stories of people I know but it's proably horse shit. Don't throw out the bunch because of a few bad bananas I say.

I guess people have always rebelled against their parents, but when our parents rebelled it was against a stricter system. Because of their rebellion we have a fairer system to rebel against, so when we rebel we have to really push the bounds of what is acceptable.

Mostly, you do get over it, but there are some things (drug addictions, alcohol addictions,) that could turn out to be real problems in the very near future. The only problem is that if you keep kids from rebelling, either you have to effectively brainwash them, or they are resentful for the rest of their lives, which isn't healthy either.

They dont see where it leads them. Also the gap between the rich and poor has gotten much worse in the last decade or so. Leading to greater extremes.

It's the glamourizing of those behaviors. Nothing more, nothing less. It's what's in right now and unlike other fads drugs and alchohol are actually addictive, and unfortunately destructive.

When's the last time you've robbed/killed someone to get the latest Tomagatchi?

I just want to tell you that by taking such an extreme stance you open yourself up for manipulation.

Think about who tells you what is and what isn't "drug taking behaviour".

Be wary of generalisation. "Drugs" is a very flimsy concept. It can be everything from chocolate to cocaine to antibiotics. Any substance could be thrown in there. I'll bet there are environmentalist groups that would like to see meat become as illegal as heroin.

The notion that the youth of today are worse than the youth in previous generations is a load of rubbish. Yes, the youth of today are more likely to fall into drugs obviously - but the youth have always been trouble makers and have always been little shits.

There is also the other side of things. I think the youth today are more accepting than the youth of the past due to education and forward progress to do with things like race and disabilities.
