No one is saying doing drugs makes you a bad person. But at a young age I would be careful. Not saying this is you but if you can't go a week without smoking a joint, odds are it is an addiction. It's important to be able to know if it's gotten out of control. I know many people like you who "started when they were 16" (or younger) and ten years later they are the most neurotic people I know. If they don't smoke a joint 2 or 3 times a day they get very aggravated, violent, and irrational. Since they started so young and have been doing it for so long it just seems normal to them. Which I find scary.

So now its heroine. A hundred years ago it was fucking opium. Its the same stuff, just a bit more refined and maybe a little cheaper (does anyone know the 19th century street value of opium?). I think older generations need to get over themselves a bit and also wonder "are kids getting worse, or is this behaviour simply getting more exposed as the media gets broader and less censored?"

I heard one old bloke say that back in his day you didn't see kids getting hammered all over the TV to which his son replied that you also weren't allowed to say bum without incurring wrath.

Yes drugs are a serious problem, but they always have been. So is binge drinking.

The worst drug abuse I've ever seen was a bunch of Somalians children chewing the weed they stole from their dads. This was back during the quasi-democratic movement back in 2005 that totally failed.

One of my roommates from back at Junior College was in Moghadishu covering the whole movement. He wound up writing a few blogs about these kids and the average day in their lives. Think Compton, packed with teenage druggies packing Kalashnikovs and RPGs... or just think of the city in InFamous.

I think violent crime isn't being punished with severely enough by authorities nowadays
But as for the kids/teens themselves... They're all idiots (not all there seems to be a few with there head screwed on in this group) but its ok, because I was a teen once, n I was also an idiot

I just hate all children. Good or bad, they should be sent away until they reach the age of 17, then they can be brought back.

*sigh* Imagine how quiet aeroplanes would be...

There's no denying that things have gotten worse I'm 26 and you can visibly see a trend difference in the behaviours of people in gaps of about 4 or 5 years.

The common thing is to blame boredom or a lack of things to do, I disagree, I think for the most part you can blame parents/society. As people are busier both parents in a lot of households have jobs and there are more distractions the younger generation get somewhat left to their own devices, left in front of a T.V. for instance... (something which is also contributing to health issues) desensitization is also to blame, when I was a child if I were to say damn in front of my parents it would be a punishable offense and when my father was a child it was worse still... as things become more acceptable and part of society what was once unacceptable creeps up and becomes will be acceptable for the next generation.

This has created a generation of people who under developed in terms of common sense and life skill sets.

For those saying its always been the case, I suggest you see some small tribal villages perhaps in South America or Africa where western civilisation has played virtually no part in their day to day lives and think of them as a snap shot of what life was like several hundred years ago. The children in those villages are well disciplined and respectful and they grow up to make pillars of the community.

To people freaking out about drugs, get over it. Seriously just get over it.

Weed does not make kids bad, neither does smoking cigarettes or drinking.
sure there are disrespectful and violent kids but this has more to do with their upbringing and the culture they have been exposed to rather than anything else. It has become the norm for parents and the older generation blame drugs, cigarettes and booze because it is easier than blaming themselves.

I'v smoked cigarettes since i was 14 and have not had one for 2 weeks. I also smoke dope multiple times a week but have been invited to to honors in politics and history at uni. My dad told me the effects of cigarettes and pot and made sure i had a support should i get out of hand.

Point is kids should be raised to be informed about the negative affects of drugs, cigarettes and alcohol and be allowed to make their own decisions.

I agree with many other countries that once your balls drop or tits pop, you're no longer a kid. If I can actually tell what gender you are, you're a young adult.

Getting drunk or stoned, shooting yourself, & driving like a douchebag early in life are a few of natrues ways of skimming off the stupid people, unfortunately, many of them manage to reproduce before their long-term suicide finally does them in.

Ever since we started recording information there are two common themes. Kids are always getting worse and the end of the world/civilisation is always just around the corner.

Kids test their boundries. It is part of growing up.

Yeah me too, and I think a bit of physical discipline is a good thing. Just a little, my mother spanked me when I drew on the walls with my crayons.
My mother and father used to hit with any household object they could find. This stopped as I got older, and my father moved away.

I seem to have turned out okay.. Well, atleast I'm not psychotic or anything D:

Well done for beating your addiction.
I find the problem is tabloids like The Daily Mail. If they write CRIME HAS GONE UP THANKS TO TEENS,everyone will start believing that. They're judging a whole group of people by a few individuals.
Maybe that's why people avoid sitting near me on the bus...

Adults probably complain, not to be killjoys, but because they've done it all before. Think about it, the majority of parents for the current generation would've more or less grown up in the 70s, hence their generation probably invented the style of partying we know today. They're just trying to make sure the kids don't go awry with it. Also you think smoking dope at 11 is bad? When I was staying in Glasgow I was in an area where people as young as 11 were taking heroin, no joke.

What do I consider acceptable? Hell, anything as long as kids aren't going around in 'gangs' killing each other/doing anything else completely moronic, they're bound to experiment with drugs and alcohol sooner or later, it's up to them to find their balance.

absolutly nothing has changed, except what the drugs of today have been cut with.
This. The issues of today regarding youth can be mirrored back through the last 50 years, with different focus in different places.

Look at merry old England and it's opium wars.

Parenting has just got worse.. its not all of the kids these days. Just the ones with parents that can't be arsed to give them a good slap when they act like they do..

Nowadays you may hear adults complaining about "kids these days, with their parties and alcohol and drugs." And for the most part, I agree. Drinking at a party is okay in moderation, people who get sloshed every 3 days disgust me. As for drugs, I have recently quit being a weekend abuser and have been successful in completely weening off of it. My life improved and I saw a general improvement in my studies. Which begs the question, why do kids do these things if they see where this leads them?

At the bus stop today I was shocked to see a young African-American child, no more than 11 ask a group of teenagers for rollies (joint rolling papers), This was disturbing as the kid had the tough as nails attitude to go with it. This has been bothering me all day, What's happened to kids these days?

What I'm asking you escapists is your opinion on my story and your opinion on what is considered acceptable in today's society.
Nothing has happened to kids these days, if you went back to the 1940's during World War 2 and visited London, you would've noticed kids picking up shrapnel from bombs to throw at people.
I do wonder if kids do bad things because they feel it's expected of them, though.

I mean, old people who were treated like people and not "old people" were more mobile, smarter and stronger, for instance.

What if treating children like fully-capable, sentient beings and not "trouble" would make them act "normally"?
I mean, sure, you'd still have kids trying drugs and drinking, but that's expected, you've gotta experience things to gain an opinion on them.

People aren't sealed enviroments, they're being constantly effected and changed by the outside.

Exactly man. When we are out, nothing gets damaged or destroyed, nobody is disturbed. We all just partake in a activity that we all enjoy, which ultimately only affects us. The problem I think, lies not with the drug users but with the hard drinkers. They're the ones getting in trouble with the police, destroying things, interrupting peoples lives. It's the god-damned irony of public perception identifying the drug users as the bad people, while at the same time perpetuating the view the alcoholism is OK. It's acceptable, when really thats the real danger to society.

N.B When I talk about drugs, i'm generally referring to non-addictive substances such as weed, magic mushrooms, acid. Not highly addictive and dangerous substances like cocaine, heroin, crystal meth. This is because from my personal experience far less people do these drugs rather than weed or booze.
