So why is it the media is allowed to get away with such irresponsible generalisation without being caught out by someone about it? Why has it gotten far enough to actually become an issue?

The older generations will always shake their fists at what they feel is dangerous in possibly polluting the minds of the younger generations. The Baby Boomer generation (our parents) were once accused of Rock'N'Roll music being the music of Satan and Elvis being the Devil's helper. They thought then that they would never act like that when they had kids, but they do and probably the next generation will too. Whenever there's some new form of technology/entertainment there will always be a majority out there that fear the unknown.

However some factors elevate minor concerns into overblown fears. The Columbine Incident was linked to a video game and the majority of parents flipped out. WHY, b/c the media plastered that factor all across the news reels. The majority of News Channels left out the fact that the two boys who killed their fellow students were shunned by their classmates and grew up in poor households. Like former President Bush, all problems began to be linked back to one primary source as the cause i.e., video games. In reality, the News only cares about ratings and if any tragedy has any relation to video games then its big news. Of course your parents will watch the news, read the paper, or talk to other parents and hear about the News reports on video games' relation to youth violence. Try talking with your parents about this and explain to them about video games, because they are in the dark concerning this topic.

Another thing: DON'T BECOME DEFENSIVE TOWARDS ANY NEGATIVE THINGS ABOUT VIDEO GAMES. (Not saying you do, but just don't). Any major game site is filled over the brim with ignorant, angry, and hateful little trolls that get butt hurt every time someone has an opinion about negative effects of video games. If someone has a different opinion, like all topics, you should let them give their opinion and discuss it with them in a mature manner. If your the mature young gamer you say you are, then show it through a knowledge of facts and communication with your parents so you can tell them that they don't have to worry about your mind being polluted by the evil video games like the NEWS NETWORKS and Politicians claim. By using facts it will put your parent's minds at rest and they won't be easily swayed by the slander that stagnates in the NEWS and on Washington D.C. If you do that it'll show your level of maturity to your parents and they will trust you more in your game purchases. Shalom.

It's because of the "with age comes widsom" argument. Made completely invalid by Gordon Brown.
Soon to have the inverse of that statement proved by David Cameron.

Screw it. I can't find a way to phrase that joke correctly. Forgive me.

Most adults wish to forget that they were ever kids, because they did some really outrageous stunts in their time. They then think that all kids are like what they were, and treat "kids" (ages 14 to 25 approximately) with distrust. When an adult says, "Kids just don't know any better", it means that they didn't know any better back when they were young.

Congratulations! You are more mature than most adults. Unfortunately, we do not live in a true meritocracy, and thus "kids" have limited power to change things.

It's because alot of people pretty much treat whatever the media says as the pure and unadulterated truth, and most of it is, but when someone steps up to the microphone and says something, truthful or not, there will always be people who believe it because "It's on the news!".
