So the other day I was driving and saw a marine sticker and a sticker below it that said "Kill Hadji" on a truck. I was thinking to myself about wtf that could mean. So I just looked it up and apparently Hadji is a term to describe Muslims/Arabs probably deriving its name from the Jonny Quest character.

I don't really think that it helps anything to make stickers that openly condone the killing of a people based on their ethnic/religious background. Just seems the same as putting a sticker on the back of your car that says kill niggers. Its all in bad taste to be honest. I just don't understand why people would want to propagate racism like this.
It's the expression of a psychological coping mechanism meant to dehumanize one's enemy to allow the expressing individual mental freedom to do what's necessary to harm said enemy with minimal guilt/shame. Also, it's an open badge and conversation piece with which to immediately identify himself so other like-minded people can gauge compatibility.

Oh, and racism, but that's the boring answer, isn't it?

If it's someone who's been to war and lost friends and had nightmarish scenes of bloodshed burned into their consciousness as an eternal psychological tattoo reminding them of the worst that humanity has to offer, then I certainly understand where they're coming from, and it's not worth trying to untie that knot unless you're a professional dealing with a willing participant.

This truth brought to you by a 23-year-old American serving as an Info Sys Tech (E6) in the Navy.

I know a guy who's a former US army ranger who has killed terrorists before and now he just calls all arabs ragheads. Guess that's what happens when you go through a situation where people of a certain race are out to kill you, you start to generalize and refer to all people who look like them by one name.

I wonder if members of Al Qaeda have bumper stickers that say 'Kill Steve' if they even have bumpers, or cars that aren't blown-up for that matter.

OP: That's just idiotic.

I wonder if there are any military personnel trolling the forums who has any personal experience with this. Be interesting to see what they have to say. I can understand killing people who are out to kill you but when you start generalizing and wanting to kill civilians too thats when shit crosses the line.
We don't care what they think or do on their spare time. When off duty, the military has no control over what stickers people put on their vehicles. I can understand where some people might get this gun-ho attitude in post-9/11 America, but when you see a sticker that does say "Kill Hadji" it's not necessarily referring to civilians. We have been using codewords and slang to describe and name our opponents, the Germans were Jerries, the Russians were Ivans, and the Viet Cong were Charlies, taken from the phonetic Victor Charlie. It's a form of mental conditioning that allows a soldier to dehumanize their opponent and perform his or her duty to the fullest. It's easier to pull a trigger on some nameless Charlie than to start thinking it's just a normal guy with a name, a family, and kids.

So does the military refer to the Middle Easterners as "Hadjis"?
Not all, but some. I have heard it a few times before, but some of us get by without using such nomenclature.

Ah, idiots and bigotry. I hate to say it, but while I can respect the US Marines and their willingness to give their lives, they are from a country that began with racism and has been moving away from how racist it was before very, very slowly. Most of the Redneck Americans will instantly count anyone who resembles someone from an enemy country as an enemy of America. In fact, I work with an guy from India, and apparently a couple of hicks think that India is in the Middle East, so they keep calling him "Jihad" and things along those lines.
that made me laugh XD
I can't believe they actually think that India is in the middle east.
apparently there has been some devolution on their side of the water.

Hmm...

I began thinking of the 'Haj', the trip Muslims are supposed to take to Mecca....

And I think Hadji may be a term for one such person taking this trip...

But I can't be sure.

That's a little sad. I mean you get racism in any war you come into with some nasty sounding names, but you'd think you'd leave that sort of thing on the battlefield rather than parade it around town. It seems a little silly of them to do something as inflammatory as that.

What? Wasn't Hadji from India? I'm sure India has muslims in it, but Hadji always seemed more 'hindu' to me.
Most racist military people I know call Muslims 'ahkmed' 'towel head' or 'sandn****rs'

Interesting... I thought it originated from the Marines, but oh well, still good advice. And the marines did kinda adopt it, didn't they?

I thinks its funny how wrong some of u r. A few of u were close to getting the 'kill hadjis' thing right. A hadji is a muslim who has completed the pilgrimage to meccah and back. They are considered an elder and counselor of their tribe. But to us marines, a hadji is any islamic person who tries or want to kill us. It is a derogitory word that allows us to dehumanize our enemy the same way they do us. It is a large necessity to stay sane during and after combat. This is coming from an infantry rifleman in the united states marine corps
