Depending on price that could either be okay or really horrible. Still, that's just the developers handling the model badly rather than an argument against the model itself, I've heard Tekken Revolution does things a bit better.
Not that mishandling F2P is a point in favor of the game, mind :V
I'm just worried that M$ might play this as "Spend more to win more!" and make characters seen as "Higher tier" more expensive as a result.
Besides, one of the main selling points of such fighting games was always the characters, each with their own style.
Limiting it that to one and hiding the rest behind a paywall could really hurt the game.

Captcha: Wide Berth.
I know Captcha, just as bad as Xbone is, I do want to see KI at least do well or at least not suck

In my honest opinion, F2P models ruin a lot of the games they're in by virtue of interfering with game mechanics/balance in order to get money out of people. And the worst thing is, it doesn't become balanced if you pay some money, it stays broken so you pay more. TF2 is about the only F2P game I've seen that does it rather well, and that's only because Valve don't entirely care about any profits made from selling it anymore, most of it's from hats, which are arbitrary. But if a fighting game gives you one, singular character, and expects you to buy the rest, that's stupid. It's not even the obvious things though. They could just make one of the more powerful characters paid instead of free (although in this case that's almost certain), or give you a limited range of combat styles (also certain - really, one character is just so stupid for a fighting game. I don't even).

I'm generally more of a "Don't knock it 'till you try it" sort of person, but that's an incredibly dubious setup. Double Helix, known mainly for terrible games, and Rare, a husk of the studio that people liked, which made Kinect Sports recently, team up to make a free-to-play fighter in which only one character is initially available.

So KI3 is now being made by a dev that forgot how to make good games and one that never learned how?

Splendid! Don't see how it could go wrong.

Yeah, from what I've seen it's going to be total trash, with about as little presence on the competitive circuit as Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game.
Hey! Atleast that game had like, you know... stuff...
Not just stuff, but things too!

Who doesn't want to play a low polygon, photo realistic version of Cammy, as played by Kylie Minogue?
Hang on, back up a step.

Is Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game an actual thing, or are you just being clever?
Oh, it's a thing.

It was most certainly a thing.
What in the name of fuck. Surely this is just some elaborate photoshopping?

Nope :D

Why are you people so eager to deny this amazing game's existence?
A thread where people have just discovered the existence of this game.

What a glorious occasion. Thank you Daystar!

I saw this arcade machine a lot as a kid. Surprised so few people know about it.

Having the option to only unlock characters you want to use, and then saving money by skipping those that don't appeal to you, isn't necessarily a bad thing. Or, well, it is if the balance is completely awful. I was about to say something about how bad it would be if the balance was awful and then the game got patched continuously, but then I remembered that MS will be charging a shitload of money for game patches so there probably won't be any. Still, if the balance somehow is on level with KOF13, Tekken Tag 2 or Persona 4: Arena, where all characters are considered competitively viable, this will be a complete non-issue.

The real problem is if you need to buy power-ups, new attacks and that kind of bollocks, which really WOULD ruin the game for the sake of milking the cash cow x_x

Alriiiight then. On the topic of Killer Instinct. We're talking about a series here that was never really a paragon of balanced games or solid design choices that has survived almost entirely on nostalgia being handled by a pair of developers whose recent works read like a 'Ten Worst Games of 20XX' list. So we're not off to a good start. Then the game is going to be on the Xbone which means that it's a near certainty (I don't care what the developers say on this matter I care what they do) that it won't become a staple in the fighting game communities tournament rotation due to no organizer wanting to deal with the 'must connect Xbone to the internet every 24 hrs.' BS.

If this was being handled by more competent people (or hell, semi-competent people) I would have some faith that they won't cock up the F2P aspect but I'm sure they'll find a way. I'm expecting something along the lines of Street Fighter x Tekken levels of douchebaggery and pricing. I'm a little more optimistic about how DoA5: Ultimate is going to handle this.

Lastly, to me at least, the game looks hideous. This is supposed to be a next generation game, yes? In short it doesn't look like one. I'm not a graphics whore but if you're trying to coerce/strong-arm/threaten me into buying a new console I'm going to expect games that don't look like mid-tier entries for the previous generation.
