North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has died at the age of 69, state-run television has announced.

His death was announced in an emotional statement read out on national television.

The announcer, wearing black, said he had died on Saturday of physical and mental over-work.

The BBC's Lucy Williamson in Seoul says his death will cause huge shock waves across North Korea.

Kim Jong-il has been the leader of the impoverished communist country since the death of his father Kim Il-sung in 1994.

He suffered a stroke in 2008 and was absent from public view for several months.

His designated successor is believed to be his third son, Kim Jong-woon, who is thought to be in his late 20s.

Oh Crazy Kim. What will North Korea be like without him? It will be interesting to see how the country will be run without him. I wonder if the son will rule like his dad or take North Korea in a new direction.

So... yay?
I try not to celebrate death as a rule but... well... Kim jong il. I've not paid attention to North Korea, but wasn't he evil? Really evil?

Whatever, one of his sons are going to take over I understand it. They're probably going to be fairly similar, having been raised by him and his ideals.

Damn laggy Escapist, I posted this as well but I didn't appear immediately.

OT: So, what exactly is now going to happen to NK? Who's going to be the leader, his crazy son? I doubt that really much will change.

I don't mind celebrating the death of a tyrant, but it would be easier to be happy if this meant any real change for the North Korean people. An awful monster died on the throne and the next monster gets to take over now. Not too much to celebrate.

Holy shit. This can either be very good, or very bad. The military will almost certainly take power from the way it looks, but when were talking North Korea, no one knows whats gonna happen.

Maybe its just me, but maybe its kinda good he died?

Eh, supposedly his son is crazier than his dad was so for all we know this whole thing could be much much worse and we'll wish we still had Kim.

...

Or not. Either way, decently good news

Its about bloody time!

Now lets hope that his son hasn't developed a taste for the big red button.

Its about time. That guy was fucking insane. I usually don't rejoice in someone's death, but Kim Jong-il was a crazy son of a *****.

That doesn't mean he won't have a healthy respect for what pulling crazy stuff on the world scene would mean for him and his country. They view him as crazy because he doesn't follow any of the national societal norms. Which could be a good thing .. or a bad thing. We'll have to wait and see. But since hes a gamer, I fear the love of the big red button.
