So after 72 days of being married, Kim Kardashian is divorcing Kris Humphries. [http://marquee.blogs.cnn.com/2011/10/31/report-kim-kardashian-files-for-divorce/] Apparently she's wanting a divorce for "irreconcilable differences," most likely due to her lawyer telling her "because the script said so" would look bad in the press. Seriously, this is bull, and everybody knows this. Apparently there's even a new trending Twitter hashtag, #ThingsLongerThanKimsMarriage.

This video [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=da7CUl5gK3o&feature=feedu] pretty much sums up my feelings on this. It's a scam, and everybody fell for it. Apparently she even registered and received wedding gifts. I mean, who does that? I'd be asking for my money back from her if I got her a wedding gift. I understand that there have been shorter celebrity weddings, but the fact that she has a show and then she has the nerve to complain about privacy just gets to me. And you know that's exactly what this was for--the show. They got a nice long storyline out of it, and now they're breaking it off because divorces make better television than happy marriages.

So, discussion value: How surprised (or not) you are by this and the sad, and the sorry state the Kardashians have gotten themselves and television into.

Did anyone actually take it seriously? All I remember from it was the commercials that constantly hyped if they would even get married....after they had already been married (about a month in between the show and what happens IRL, still tried to play it as some suspenseful thing)

The amount this surprises me is an integer greater than -1 and less than 1.

Yes, that's right, it's "fuck all".

I'm not sure I understand your comment about "who does that?" regarding registering for gifts. I mean...everyone who gets married registers for gifts. I think I just don't get your specific context.

You sir have won this thread. *fanfare and confetti

The title might as well be "Stupid people do stupid thing... seriously?" I will go on not caring about her and all the other untalented people who resort to embarrassing themselves because that's the only hope they have for fame.

I mean it's quite obvious this was all for the show, and yet she still registered for wedding gifts and people bought them for her and her husband to use in their wedded life. And she still went and got divorced after three months. She cost them money to celebrate her wedding, and then threw it all away. It takes a lot of fucking nerve to do something like that (though it is likely they were aware of it, it's still a rotton thing to do).

72 days? I can beat that.

I'd like to formally propose to whoever posts next on this thread. You're in on on this thing too, now.

Didn't they spend 10 million on the wedding? That's like... $14000 for every day that they were married. Or something. I'm terrible at mathematics.

And yet this isn't even one of the shortest three marriages I've heard of. I hate Hollywood.

Not to sound old or anything but who are the Kardashians and why are they relevant?

Aren't they one of those things that will just go away if you stop paying attention to them like a 3-year-old having a tantrum or genital warts?

Bah. You beat me to it.

I feel a need to second this. And third it.

I hate that Right Wing pundits will say day and night that gays are destroying the sanctity of marriage when celebrities who's only claim to fame is being a whore get married and divorced as fast as they change diets.

This is bullshit...

Well, I'm glad to see that the 10 million dollars they spent on the wedding was worth the investment.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to get back to my unpaid internship and surviving by eating mostly rice.

The Kardashians basically invented the modern "reality show." They came out of nowhere with their show "Keeping Up with the Kardashians," and officially made themselves famous doing absolutely nothing. Their show follows them and their "lives" as socialites. Kim helped bring a lot of attention to the show at its start by having a sex tape of her and her boyfriend "leaked." They really do nothing but bicker and party, and everything is so obviously staged it's almost hard to comprehend why it has such a huge following. But it does, probably because of the spectacle, and the Kardashians are officially famous for being famous. It's sickening.

It doesn't surprise me. I've only had the misfortune to watch one programme involving that thing that passes for a woman but I know enough to know that she is a waste of food, oxygen and space.
