i don't know if you guys have heard it, but in north korea a couple of days ago a man was sentenced to death. you know why? he talked on his cellphone with a guy from south korea about the higher price on rice! yes, he talked about rice and gets death sentence.

i guess this is because he talked with a man in south korea, but still! This is an example of man's cruelty. isn't it weird how low someone can go just to keep his people isolated from everything in the world.

It's Kim Jong-Il.

It would be nice if I found this surprising, but I really don't. Kim Jong-Il is at the centre of a cult of personality; he can pretty much do whatever he wants within North Korea with effectively no consequences. Besides, in terms of horrific things done to others for political control, this is nothing.

Kim Jong-Il certainly is ill. Mentally of course; N. Korea is one of the most brutal dictatorships in the world.

You probably could've worded that better...

OT: Kim Jong is a nutjob and needs to be put out of power.

One way or another.
To the S.A.S. mobile!

Nah, someone equally or more crazy will replace him.

What's left to fix?

Everyone in North Korea is so indoctrinated that they would die of shock if they found out that their beloved leader was captured by America or the UN. I guess it would by worth it to help all those starving people who are living in the mud.

Why would anyone do that? I mean, they actuallyhave weapons of mass destruction, and could therefore do some serious damage! How would that help America's image of bullying the smaller children who can't fight back?

Besides, I'm fairly certain North Korea has bugger all for natural resources.

And let's not forget the so called Joy Division he has. (Though that's probably the one sane, if narcissistic thing he's done.)

Glass the entire place.

My reasoning?

1) We would only invade because of the humanitarian issue.
2)During the invasion hundreds of thousands of civilians would die (rendering point 1 redundant).
3)If we don't invade those same civilians die, albeit more slowly, from starvation.
4)If we don't stop the regime in NK we still have to deal with a reckless, incredibly dangerous nation that relies on brinkmanship to further its foreign policy.

There are, therefore, no positives to doing nothing about NK.

Invading would be incredibly costly in terms of our own soldiers lives etc. So to have a very high chance of removing the "problem" (and remember I'm not talking about the humanitarian issue here) the only option is nuclear weaponry.

Everyday, powerful states do nothing to stop conflicts and overthrow regimes where civilians are killed en mass; morality is no issue in IR.

N.B. - I'm not saying that this is a pleasant solution, but it would work; though it would anger China.

examples of how this policy might end up fucking you over: vietnam, somalia, northern ireland, iraq, afghanistan, hezbollah, rhodesia, there are many more... put simply only UK and the US would be willing to send troops, and both countries are massively over stretched as it is.

P.S. yeah, kim yong il is massively insane though... still its the old phrase "power corrupts, absoloute power corrupts absoloutly"...

Sadly, he can even do pretty much whatever he wants outside of N. Korea. If they are low on food/medicine/whatsoever they just conduct an a-bomb test, say "Oops, nearly gotcha. Oh btw, what about sending us some of your stuff?" et voilà.

I'd vote for a Sam Fisher & Solid Snake invasion, but unfortunately his assassination would only lead to him becoming a deity for the brainwashed koreans, another crazy dictator's rise to power and probably some retaliations if the new gouvernment feels like it.
Just like the USSR chances are good they'll one day collapse on their own affairs anyhow.

You know an odd journey to take? Reading his Wikipedia page. Everyone in Western and most of Eastern society have come to view Kim Jong-il as a depraved amoral monster, but then you read that page and it says he's a big fan of movies from the Friday the 13th series and Godzilla, and that he likes Basketball. Jesus Christ, the man's insane, but hearing things like that are equally disturbing, because it shows there IS a man behind the monster.
