It could be a coincidence. I bought an 360 Elite at its lauch and it red-ringed on me a after the 360 Slim was launched. I doesn't suprise me that old xboxs are failing now. They simply aren't built to last.
It is the problem I see more and more with consumers of today. When they buy something, they naively think it is going to last forever.

My policy these days is, if it is 3 years or older, and you have free money to spend, buy a new one, because the old will not last much longer.

I have nothing to contribute to this conversation.

I never bought kinect, and I won't unless decent kinect games come out.

OK I'm going to say this blankly, but before I do I would like to add the reason for this statement. There is far to many of these post being on the internet.

1. You are fishing for a responds. (If so, eh we all got to be feeders at one point)

2. You changed your line of thought halfway, and did not reread it. (probably unlikely)

3. You for some unknown reason(might be a only child, or had overly kind parents)feel that the world does in fact listen, and even care about your every fleeting thought. It is here i feel i must inform you, to the crashing reality it does indeed not.

TL;DR Overview

pointless post

Last of all. Yes i do realize the irony, of both not posting any thing to contribute, and ignoring the original idea that this post would be to the point(blank). I thought i would keep in fashion. (just in-case any one wanted to be a intelligent planet [points for in prov reference]
You listened.

Assume everyone cares about your post.

Posted something pointless knowing the irony.

Seems you're just as bad, if not worse, considering you took up more space than I did.

TL:DR

Pointless and hypocritical post.
You listened (good, but no i was referring to life in general not the post pacifically)

Assume everyone cares about your post (again close, but no only you. how ever i was leaving a kindly note to others to inform them of why i was making a replay.

Seems you're just as bad, if not worse, considering you took up more space than I did. (no, quantity does not beat quality in this environment.

A side note
if i am hypocritical by posting when i point out the irrelevancy in my own post , then you are as well

not a fan of motion gaming. It sounded like a fun idea when the Wii first came out, but i quickly learned it was boring. I dont want to have to act out swinging a sword instead of pressing a button. Yes it may get you on your feet and moving around, but the gameplay suffers (unless its like a dance game or something of that nature).

The media and public including this site has pretty much said that the Kinect has no real gaming value behind it.
Oh well. Good on Microsoft for making a money printing machine.
G4 and a number of other "gaming media" places reversed their opinions somewhat once Kinect actually released, and it performed much better than expected.

Also, there is NO POSSIBLE WAY for a piece of hardware to "brick" another piece of hardware. (Unless, of course, that it is so poorly designed that it creates immense current draw, but then it wouldn't work anyway and no consumer electronic device comes to market in such a crappy condition.) The only thing "bricking" Xbox 360's is wear and tear on the device to the point that the device no longer functions as it should. Not "awesome new game X" or the Kinect, or anything else.

As for allegations of MS taking forever to replace the device, my first Xbox RRoD on me and was replaced within two weeks. That may seem like a long time, but the majority of it is shipping time (at least 3 days on either end, likely more) in between you and MS. The actual repair time is typically taken care of within two days. Your experience may vary, but the plural of anecdote is not data. The only time the average time for return was longer than two weeks was RIGHT AFTER there was a huge influx of repair issues when the warranty was extended (and all those people that were not on warranty before sent their boxes in at the same time).

Then why post? Why even look at this thread?

OT:
I could see a string of logic in that the kinect would mean an xbox requires more energy so the console creates more heat, which is what RRoD's people (iirc)

I tried the Kinect in a shop with a friend of mine...we had about 10 people watching us as we configured the game so we were "recognised" by the system, and then we spent another five minutes struggling to make the "hand" on the screen click "CONTINUE" - we were laughing and so were the onlookers.

So my first taste of the Kinect wasn't too good :p

Looking it at from a perspective, this shouldn't really be the cause as there is a small processor unit which takes some load off the main resources from the 360.

The 360 already seems to be an unstable piece of hardware so how can these faults not be by coincidence?

Its most likely not the Kinect breaking the xbox 360s but rather the user.

The kinect has fans separate from the Xbox 360 and therefore cannot contribute to the heating up of soldering attachments which used to be the cause of the RROD for the Xbox 360 when it was first released. Also people may be baiting the "YOUR DOING IT WRONG!!!" line by putting in the wrong cable attachment for kinect in their old Xbox.

Or other possible reasons are insufficient power, they like banging the console to get it work and its that time of year when a console RROD since: A: It random. B:Solderings are Overheated or C: It wants attention.

I work retail and in my Microsoft paperwork that I recieved pre-Kinect, it told me to only sell Kinects to newer X-Box customers or recommend them upgrade to the slim. Microsoft does NOT recommend them on older X-Boxes and that's why they don't offer any guarantees.
Is that true?

I was under the impression that the only difference was that the standard USB port on the pre-slim consoles could not provide enough power and that's why a seperate AC was supplied with Kinect. Doesn't seem to me like a slim is required at all to me.

Why would it be an Xbox killer? It costs too much, there are no decent games out for it, and most gamers don't want it.

Like I said, "recommended". Just like everything else that is made for one thing specific, it might work on other things also, but you should expect some issues to arise. If someone makes an app for an iPhone, it might work on your Blackberry or Captivate, but there will always be that chance of it messing with your phone in unexpected ways.
