So. who else opened this story thinking that it would be the exact opposite. you know actually punishing players for swearing at their games/other players, but no.

this game is rewarding people for swearing, and by nature reinforcing that it is ok, and I can just see it when even the less conservative media gets a hold of this. "games might not cause violence, but they do reward swearing" granted I can see where the game is already rated M, but seriously.
I'm right there with you, I thought this article was gonna talk about the game punishing you for swearing. I think this kind of concept could be awesome if done differently. Like in a survival horror setting you actually have to be quiet and not make loud movements or else you will be f*cked. In fact...that's how dead space should be, wouldn't it be a good idea to be quiet? Noise would surely draw in the necromorphs kind of like it does zombies. I'm disappointed, they could've done something very cool and immersing instead of rewarding potty mouths.

Inb4 people use this game that is in no way for kids to say that it encourages kids to use profanity.

And with this, I've all, but completely lost interest in the Dead Space franchise. Which is a shame seeing as how I loved the first game and enjoyed the second game.

Next on CNN:
Many high school kids are now being forced to see a psychologist by their parents when they were overheard swearing repeatedly at their Kinect. Next up is a panel discussion between myself, a leading expert on violence and videogames, and a priest.

See I've never played a dead space, but the way I read this, if I say "oh crap" or its less family friendly equivalent, then the monsters will begin flinging fecal matter at me.

Dropping an F bomb will result in a big nasty attempting to mate with my face.

This might not be the innovation we want, but the one some of us deserve.

Yes, cussing is clearly the worst thing in Dead Space. Everything else is sunshine and rainbows compared to the game incidentally reacting to the player saying the word 'shit'. Wasn't there a necromorph that could kill you by barfing into your mouth which caused you to puke your guts out and die?

Dead Space has never struck me as a particularly circumspect and subtle franchise, at least they're using the kinect for something interesting.

Whatever, they're free to keep trying and testing ways to make Kinect at least serve some purpose for those who bought into it, the gimmick that it is.

I still find it funny how people first invent new controls and THEN try to find a use for it.
Metal Gear Solid did it with the rumble function in the PS2 controller. Hey lets use a function designed to increase immersion to break the 4th wall by having the psychic villain deliberately vibrate the controller!

What you've described is basically how a lot of innovation and scientific progress works. You have Maxwell Clark writing some equations for some strange phenomena he's observing which turns out to be electromagnetism, then you wait a while and boom someone else has made a device for wireless communication. Imagine how hard, expensive and time consuming it would have been to work back from the idea of a radio or television back to that basic physics.

I guess the same can be said for touch devices like Iphones and Androids, though I daresay touch capability was a more flexible field for innovation than voice commands when it comes to video games.

For once, I kind of like this idea. Swearing aside, the whole use of voice to interact with partners instead of controls. It seems like a really cool idea, that is, if it works properly. Also, I am dying of laughter of the possibilties of the use of swear words in the actual game... Oh dear lord it will be hilarity at its finest.

First this,

<youtube=nKkPFDEiC6Q>

Now swearing at the screen as part of the game. Goody.

Seriously, I really liked the first game. A lot. Now the creators and marketing department are just wallowing around in extra chromosomes.

I don't see how this is a good thing. It's not like this is a big deal or anything, but the idea of a game reading my swear words and using them to perform actions is just kinda...stupid. As if they couldn't have made it do anything else using any other commands.
I liked Dead Space 1 and found a lot of enjoyment in the second one to, but it's like everything I hear about the third just makes it seem so...off putting...like it was made for a different crowd.

Then again, the Dead Space 2 commercial above is practically yelling that I should've seen this coming.

Why the fuck does this feature need a fucking Kinect? I'm fucking sick as shit from games pushing that sodding thing on gamers just for the functionality of a fucking microphone!
I was swearing in order to get into the spirit of the game, but I think my point still stands.

It says things will "behave in a way that you want it to."
In those situations I yell "Come on!"
I hope that has the same effect.
Anyway.
I don't know how to feel about this.
I guess it kind of fits for the Dead Space universe but it just seems... I don't know, wrong, to make swearing a functionality part of a game.
But then again, I'm sure they know that not every Xbox owner has a Kinect, it's probably not going to be a big part of the game.

really? swearing at my game? i suppose my mom will hate this game too, now. EA and visceral, you need to get your fucking act together. this weird shit is NOT helping the gaming community be accepted by other people and i have no doubt that this feature will be brought up in a discussion about video games leading to violent behavior.

so thank you for that, you fucking dumb-asses

I concur. If this was the kinda thing that was done in Dead Space 1, or a real survival horror, then I think it could have been very effective, y'know, if you make noise, it attracts the attention of your enemies. But no, this sounds a lot more like the same level of maturity of that 'your mother will hate this game' advertising campaign.

Dont get me wrong, I've done my fair share of swearing at games, but to integrate real world reactions into a game sounds lame. And a total immersion breaker. Games are losing enough immersion as it is.

I really enjoyed the original Dead Space. It was a genuine sleeper hit. Then Dead Space 2 happened. Sad to say, but I'm glad the franchise is going to end with 3. Because I'm done with it.

Considering I tend to use creative explicitves (mostly refrences to the Norse Gods, "In Odins name!", "By the Allfather!" "Fangs of Fenrir!" "Sweet Lady of Grace/By the Goddess of War, Freyja" I doubt I would get much use out of it. Still I like the idea.

"We actually have some commands that people will need to figure out,"
Welcome to Bad Design 101. Here we have an example of something to NOT do.

They should just make it so the thing registers a swear as a correct input to a QTE but it then has a cooldown of about 10 seconds so you can't swear your way to game completion, however hilarious that would be.

But to make some commands REQUIRE the player to scream at the game? That's just TERRIBLE design. Then again, most of these new motion/voice activated functions get shoe-horned in, the designers are told to make use of it by the producers because the marketing department convinced the producers it would result in more sales. Talking about the tail wagging the dog.

I cuss when I am absolutely frustrated, not when I get a shock. If I reach that point playing a game, that means one of two things: Multiplayer, or the developers made a shit game.

I don't see how this will work here. If I have to say something because the game requires it, and I can't get by without exhausting every other option, I'd feel like a tool.

Is this really the best use of the developers time? Making a system that makes it a requirement for you to swear loudly at the Kinect?

Hi this is Drift0r and welcome to Dead Space 3 In Depth, today we are looking at the "turdmonkey" insult, turdmonkey grants .287 seconds reaction time to bosses with a range of of 12 feet from the kinect, what that means to you is that you don't need to type "turdmonkey" using your controller.

I hope you learned something useful.

This is really childish.

I guess they've been brainstorming ways they could outdo "Your mom hates Dead Space".

Mission accomplished, I guess.
