I liked the first KH, but played 2 and I completely lost what was going on.
I mean why all the random new people and Nobodies? I don't even remember what happened in that game come to think of it. Other than somewhere must have been having a sale on black hooded cloaks.
Also, feel free to clear this up for me, I thought at the end of the first game they said it was impossible to travel between worlds anymore?

Kingdom </3, actually.

The KH series is a brilliant combination of everything the 14-19 demographic likes. Its a combination of Final Fantasy and classic Disney, with themes of stupid teen angst. So, all it really is is Disney's last ditch attempt to say "hey, we didn't REALLY kill all the wonderful classics you hold dear" while appealing to what's popular.

In case its not clear, I hate KH and FF.

The story in these games works more like an excuse to tie unrelated worlds together rather than a real story, so it feels a bit forced and uninteresting. The characters are run of the mill JRPG characters, nothing more to it, and the dialogue is frustratingly childish most of the time, as in for 6 year olds or less. The combat is also a constant, completely unrefined button-mashing marathon, possibly the worst combat system I've ever seen in a JRPG, I especially love how the reaction commands are assigned to the same button as the party combos and switch wildly and randomly, so you can never do what you are trying to. But the music is great, the graphics are cool, the voiceovers are fantastic, and the worlds are very well designed. I bought those games to see what they would do with the Tron and Nightmare Before Xmas worlds, and they were very well done, so I don't regret buying them.

Sorry, but what the fudge is Kingdom Hearts? From what i get,it's a whiny-dramatic jRPG with Disney characters... BLEUGH!
Oh good, another Yahtzee wannabe. Kingdom Hearts is indeed a jRPG but it has the best plot in it then most of the American crap they shit out. Oh look! Another Space Marine is blowing an alien's head into next week. How original.

Try playing the game before you bash it, douchebag.
First, you are not better than me,you prick. But well, this is the Internet.

Second,i dislike jRPGs not because Yahtzee does. It's because they kind of bore me to death.

And third... what's that? Another space marine game? AGAIN?! BLEUGH!

That is to say,i dislike jRPGs and generic brown FPSes equally.

Teen Angst? There's barely any teen angst. Most of the time, one of the main characters will get a bit down and then everyone will go "Buck up, chum! Let's trot off and fix the issue." at which point the guy who's slightly down will nod, grin like a fool and then they'll go off and hit things with giant keys.

In fact it's possibly the least angsty game series SquEnix has ever taken part in.

An evil conspiracy of people in black robes that have lost their souls who may or may not be evil but still act all EMOtional isn't emo?

Oh, I looked up the plot on wikipedia one day, and the whole thing screamed contrivance and forced drama.

Too FF7 for me. Give me some believable characters with believable motives, and I'll buy into it.
Organization XIII (with the exception of Roxas) don't have emotions because they don't have hearts. They pretend to have emotions, but that's about it to try to make them feel human, but that's about it. In fact they're pretty much the opposite of emo since they don't actually feel anything.

To get the full story of KH2 you really needed to play either Chain of Memories (GBA) or RE: Chain of Memories (PS2, not released in the EU) which gives you at least some introduction to Organization XIII. The Nobodies were new enemies introduced in KH2, but the black cloaks were first brought in at the end of KH1: Final Mix (Japan only), although they aren't really explained until CoM got brought out.

I hate it because I can't kill the Disney characters.

I heard a rumor that Hulk, Spider-Man, & Wolverine are going to be in the next one, now that Disney owns Marvel. (The only good I can see from that is a new Gargoyles comic).

I gave up on Kingdom Hearts around the time I was running around an island for hours looking for a single coconut that I'd missed. That dog won't hunt, monsignior.
Actually, I never beat KH1 cause I found the platforming in Wonderland too difficult. That said, My intro to the series was Chain of Memories for the GBA, and I loved it. (I couldn't afford a PS2 at the time.) Also, I found KH2 to be a lot easier.

Speaking of Kingdom Hearts, how many Escapists have played 358/2 Days?
I have. Sort've. I don't have a DS, so I watched the cutscenes on youtube. I thoroughly enjoyed the story. There is a thread on it here: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/jump/9.146402.3369314

I have not checked it for spoilers yet so read at your own risk.

Why do people love Kingdom Hearts so much???

I don't think I'll ever understand it... Well I get that the game will always win the anime nerd vote right out of the gate, but seriously... it's so emo, and it has Disney characters! How do you take a game with Mickey Mouse in it seriously?

I can sum up Kingdom Hearts in two words: Worlds Collide. If you hate Disney with the fury of a thousand suns, you probably won't like this game. If you hate Final Fantasy, they're only in it for about one world. Emo? Sora's friends essentially forbid Sora's attempts to be emo. Later, Sora returns the favor to his emo friend Riku and makes him laugh. Do you like parallel dimensions? You might like this game. Sora's world gets destroyed, and the next thing he knows he's getting woken up by a cartoon dog. Truthfully, as evidenced by many fanfics, yeah, the Disney worlds are essentially a side-show, you could replace those worlds with any other worlds and characters without hampering things too much. This gives them a chance to play and mess with your head at the same time. One thing I found amusing is the first time Sora meets Donald and Goofy, Donald essentially lies to Sora in order to get on his side and obey their orders from the king. How can I defend a game with Mickey Mouse? Possibly because this is the one time when Mickey really gets to shine and be awesome. In one scene, Mickey is led to believe one of his friends has been killed, sacrificing himself for Mickey. Mickey then dawns a costume change, draws his weapon, and vows to hunt down his friend's killers. "They'll pay for this..." In Chain of Memories, Mickey is essentially Riku's saving grace, helping him to forgive himself. In KH2, even Minnie Mouse is a powerful ally in battle.

For me, one of my favorite moments comes in KH2 in the optional world of Hundred Acre Wood. If anything about this game is childish, it's here. After helping Pooh bear and his friends, Pooh begs you not to go, not wanting to miss his friend Sora. Sora, missing his own friends, adds his own reflections to help Pooh understand, like a parent to a child. And that's precisely why it is not childish. And if you're too old to understand that, then I don't want you playing this game.
It's a fun game, it has its light and dark moments. I felt reasonably challenged and varied by the games I completed. And I love the story.

I agree. I would love to do away with all tutorials. If you can't figure something out then read a little bit. Plus if you ever want to replay it gets really tedious. But I loved 358/2 days. Really fleshed out Axel's friendship with Roxas, which I thought felt kind of forced before.
As always it depends. Sometimes they can have fun with tutorials, or hide them in a clever way. If you want to see the greatest of tutorials, check out any of the Spider-man movie games. Where the tutorials are narrated by Bruce Campbell. That alone makes the time worthwhile!

Looks like someone wasn't paying attention to Yen Sid, who explained all of this. http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/516587/19972
Also, if you see the ending of KH:ReCoM, you will understand why they wear the black cloaks, and where they came from.

I love unsubstantiated rumors! Did you hear this from some guy who knows things?
And btw, you can kill the Disney villains.

I hate Kingdom Hearts. It's annoying, the characters have yet to give me a single reason not to hate them, and it's a combination of a JRPG and a Disney game, which are two of the worst things ever.
Thank you for your addition to the conversation. So, what *do* you like?

The game is insanely awesome and has the coolest evil organization that is trying to use the main character for their own evil needs. That just screams extreme!

The gameplay's great and the plot brings you to many varied locations. Add that to the fact that all the Disney characters are from when Disney was good and you got yourself a great game(s).

Edit: The 1000 heartless battle is still one of the best moments in my gaming history

Whats not to love?

Everything you mentioned, I think the complete opposite of.

I love the soundtrack, the story is compelling and deep (actually made me cry in II), I don't see how you think its "emo," and Mickey Mouse kicks tons of ass, thats why!

One thing I WILL say about KH is the plot is convoluted and retarded. But then i've only played the PS2 games, not the PSP ones. Making me buy a 2nd console to get the whole story = failure tactic of failure, Squeenix.
I'd be surprised if you had played the 'PSP ones', as there's only and it's not even out yet.

On topic, the idea initially seemed dumb, as the first I'd heard of it was a trailer on a bonus disk that came with Final Fantasy X, after playing it I immediately fell in love with it , my friends don't really like it though as they claim it's childish.

It's a Disney story / game with the typical final fantasy over the top cream.

Oh, I created an second save file right before that haha I just play through that moment whenever I feel like bringing my PS2 out.
But really: KH (1 and 2) is an ACTION jRPG... it is so much more than your average turn based fighting gameplay. Still, the reasons for liking this game are different for everybody, but I am still concerned about all the people who state they hate it (yet they also say they haven't played it....)
