I'm just doing an assignment due in tomorrow and while proof-reading through it I noticed I am immensely kissing arse, half the stuff I right is there solely for the purpose of pulling at my tutors heart strings because I know it's exactly the kind of stuff she'll agree with. I knew I did it a little but heck I didn't realise I did it as much as I have, it's basically a tribute. Granted it'll get me a better grade in the long run more than likely but is it morally wrong to kiss arse like that?

So that is the question I leave to you Escapists, arse-kissing: yay or nay? Equally do you ever find yourself putting stuff into an assignment solely because you know it's exactly what they're looking for?

It's butt kissing if your being phoney about it. And since you havent told us what the assinment is, what you added, and how you feel about what you added, who's to say? If your saying stuff you accually don't belive, just to impress them. that's butt kissing. If you really do mean or feel what you say, if it's "genuine", then no, it's not. It's just the truth.

It isn't butt kissing to tell someone you admire them if you really DO admire them. (as an example.) Saying you do, when in fact, you just want a leg up on them, is butt kissing.

I guess
but I usually call it bullshitting.
No, bullshitting is just lying. Kissing arse is just a complete tidal wave of unwarranted flattery and sycophancy.

Kiss the shit out of that arse, what's the worst that can happen?

Edit: Eurgh. Actually, under no circumstances should you ever kiss the shit out of an arse. D:

Depends what subject the assignment is for. If it's a serious subject, I'd feel a bit dubious, but if it's a waste of time bullshit thing you're stuck with doing for no good reason where you're supposed to do stuff like that, that's a different matter.

oh and in my concept of bullshitting in usually includes adding to make it sounds more complex as well.

but nope I have never done a "complete tidal wave of unwarranted flattery and sycophancy"

Yeah, pretty much this.

If you agree wholeheartedly with your tutor's opinion, it's not butt-kissing. If you secretly disagree with your tutor's opinion, but pretend to agree anyway, it's butt-kissing.

Of course, that's not to say you should go out of your way to antagonize your tutor's opinion. Being contrarian isn't going to help you any either.

And if you glorify the virtues of conjunctions to your tutor, you're "but-kissing", and that should also be avoided.

when it comes to my assignments i generally dont consider who could possiby be marking it, i normally know the first marker but the second and third i dont know,
but i dont really putin ass-kissing material anyway, last year i had to do an assignment to do with women and prison, i know the first maker was one of the most out spoken feminist lecturers and in managed to put in it that the feminist researchers just needed to get laid ( i worded it slightly different) ha

I don't mind helping out with others or playing favorites with teachers, if I enjoy the teacher, you can bet that I'm gonna wanna play a bigger role in the classroom. Its those folks who go out of their way and act like an obedient puppy dog that can do no wrong that I can't stand. Just the way they talk tends to just annoy me, as they tend to brush up every single word in their sentence to hide anything that could be taken as an insult.

It just comes off as dishonest to me. You can't please everyone, but attempting to is like faking a yawn. You can try, but a lot of people are gonna know you don't mean the stuff you say.

If you're doing it to get ahead of your peers then IDE call it sucking up (or whatever u wanna call it) bur if you're doing it for the grades I think that's fine theres nowt wrong about playing the game once in a while. I don't think your sincerity on the matter factors into it :D

I let my work talk for me, I don't need to suck up. Actually, I pretty much insult some of my teachers. Except in PE. It's impossible to get an A if you don't suck up in that...

Depends. I've once written insulted a teacher...in verse. And she read it. I also recall my English teacher absolutely hating me, but I forget why.

For some teachers however, I liked standing out. Not necessarily as always agreeing, but showing that I've read things on the subject and the like. They appreciated that.

If it will get you a better grade, who cares? It doesn't matter in the long run. Granted, I'm not the most moral person, but it's just an assignment.

When it comes to school, I'd go with getting a better grade. Hell, you'll do the same thing out of school when moving into your future career. Padding your resume is just what you do.
