Knifing in FPSs. What happened?

So while playing a match of CoD4 I was wondering how the hell do game devs now explain pulling out a knife and stabbing in all one motion that takes less than .5 seconds while in the middle of shooting?

It seems that this has been the trend in recent FPS games where knifing is insanely fast and totally unrealistic. What happened to games like Counter Strike where you at least had to hit 1 to take the knife out before using it? It seems that if you have to hit 1,2,3 etc to change guns you should have to with a knife as well.

Nowadays military operatives have their combat knife in a chest sheathe that means they can pull it out and stab with it in one motion, to increase speed. It takes a second or two to put back in, but added speed in taking it out and taking down a threat is far more valuable.

I have felt this way about FPS's in general ... mainly MW2 ... nothing like entering a game and being ninja'd the entire round ... sorta reminded me of zombies ...

In COD4?

Do not complain about COD4. That made sense. There was literally no way that you were close enough to knife someone without them being in a coma. That game has the least knifing problems.

Less than Counter Strike, actually, because the knife was so underpowered in that game. If you have enough ninja skills to get close to someone in a game where you can kill someone with a pistol across the map, you deserve a 1-hit kill, or at the very least, a fast 2-hit kill.

also stop with the "unrealistic" if you want realistic don't play call of duty

Its because in the singleplayer campaign it is very useful to be able to kill something close to you and they have gotten a lot of complaints about the fact that the butt of a gun hurts things more than .30 ml bullets

I like fast knifing. If it was as quick as using a gun, Id use the f'ing gun.

I sometimes like being able to carry the knife around. Good for knife fights.

In Day of Defeat: Source, it's made pretty realistic (I think it's similar to CS).
1. You have to switch to your melee weapon.
2. A single swing of a melee weapon can't kill you, with full health.
3. If you are behind a still enemy, you can cause massive damage, as you are able to charge your blow in such situations.

It's also fun as hell to beat the life out of your enemies with your shovel.

I'm fine with it. I hated switching to it in Bad Company 1.
That's the thing I miss most about BC 1 when playing BC 2! It's so much more satisfying to stalk people with your knife out, and there's none of that re-sheathing BS you get in the likes of COD. I'm not particularly opposed to Halo style melee, but I wish having a knife out was still an option.

CoD4 got it perfect, was balanced in a way which in no shape or form made it more powerful then firearms.

But then MW2 came along and Jesus cried.

Yes, because in real life there are knife fights every five seconds, and men can absorb bullets like styrofoam.

Ever wondered why no good FPS features a mechanic by which your boot laces came undone*? O.K you have me there...

In CoD4 i just hate the motion that screws with the view ;[
Oh...and the fact that two point blank shots with a pistol to the heart does bugger all, when a knife slash across the chest is instant kill.

The way Snake in MGS holds a knife is the method why they do it so fast. I do admit the split second it takes to instantly kill someone with a knife is abused too much, especially in MW2 with all those with the knife class. That's why I prefer Halo melee over most games, well not including that the auto-aim assist makes it possible for someone to assassinate you when they are in front of you when all they have to do is jump backwards.

I take objection to this, as Far Cry 2 was intensely satisfying to play. Granted, online as dominated by loads of rocket spammers, but that is besides the point. Weapon jams in the single player (remember single player FPSs, guys?) forced you to think about more than just what enemies were around you and how many grenades you had left to spam with, and kept the notion that you are just as vulnerable as the NPCs firmly planted in your head at all times.

God I really wish I had that game right now....
