the whole instant kill with a knife is more of a reward for the enemy allowing you to get that close to you than a realism, if you had to knife someone 4 or 5 times there would be no possible use for the knife...unless you needed it to stir a cuppa soup in battle or something

This thread made me think of how far we've come since the days of Wolfenstein 3D and doom with their "poke poke" style knife/close ranged weapons. We've come a long way since then for better and for worse as it's provoked an onslaught of rushes in MW2.
I don't mind them much (I did mind the dual-wielding shotgun nutters in the past before it was patched) and I tend to think of it as "they're not invincible"

Fact is, there'll always be somebody looking for that one cheap, repetitive kill "tactic" in any game. And it's their loss because it'll open them up to other ways they can be taken down by other players in the game

So I don't really get overly annoyed by it, I've even been known to mutter "Good shot" in admiration of a sniper (a proper one mind, one that doesn't spend the entirety of the game in one spot alone) Some people won't change; if there is a quick way to achieve a kill online, regardless of how annoying/cheap/samey it can be, people'll do it. I've just learnt to live with it and move on.

I spare my nostalgic i.e. hostile complaints about "press x for teleportation insta-kill" somewhere else.

Though I think Bad Company 2 has the best insta knifing ability. It's not lightning fast, it isn't bodymagnetic and you get a dog tag for every mofo you slice. Makes it all more satisfying. Melee combat in games is the scenario when to players engage and one leave victorious and other lie in a pool of humiliating blood. Though all this was destroyed with one particulur game featuring, mentioned above, teleportation knives.

I'm will not mention any names.

You can knife someone in operation flashpoint: dragon rising, but seriously though

...good luck trying to do that!

Due to game's realistic nature, you even freak out if a enemy solider is a hundred yards away from you, let alone right up close next to you to knife them.

Ever wondered why no good FPS featured weapon jamming? Far Cry 2
Ever wondered why no FPS( until around CoD2 time<b) featured breathing? Operation Flashpoint
Ever wondered why no good FPS features a mechanic by which your boot laces came undone*? O.K you have me there...

They all occurred to me, so I thought an extra clause was necessary!
Are you trying to say that CoD2 came out before Operation Flashpoint? Because you would be very, very wrong.

I do miss having to have a seperate melee weapon in FPS games because to a certain extent it does make shooting at close range somewhat pointless (when you can have an instantly lethal, extremely accurate, requires no ammo and has a suprising range for a knife).

My issue with knifing in games is not tied to realism, it's tied to the fact that it's often a broken game mechanic.

Why bother lining up a shotgun blast when you can just warp a few feet and shiv the bastard insted? The recent trend in melee buttons usally ends up becoming what I call the 'save me button', a get out of jail free card for people who panic when someone comes within their comfort zone (why bother with close range shootingwhen you can immediately remove a troublesome player by stabbing the air next to them, and then resume firing almost immediately?).

Melee weapons used to have their high damage and speed come at the price of range and long range vulnerability (they were weapons of oppertunity at best and emergancy weapons at worst), as it stands at the moment someone can snipe someone, knife you and then proceed to snipe someone else in the very next instant with no pause in between.

If you are gonna have melee as an attack usable with every weapon then I think that the Gears of War way of doing it was the best, that being, (namely with the chainsaw) getting shot will bar you from being able to melee for a brief period of time (this would keep melee as a usable option if done right but prevent people from simply using berserker tactics and witching classes).

Edit: Misread. These drugs are messing with my recognition. :(

STALKER has just shot you in the face for saying that, at least it would have if it had remembered to maintain it's SVU. Now the bloody thing's jammed again...

I didn't mind up till MW2 where it is quite easy to put Ninja/lightwieght, Commando, marathon, and a pistol with a tactical knife to make a knife class that can kill you from three yards away, though I did find it funny that I could fire three machine gun rounds at a charging enemy's chest and he kills me with a knife swing to the knees.

THAT WAS YOU?!

Hell, all I use is Marathon/Lightweight/Commando.

What I would like is a game where you see the knife and it's a one hit kill, (Although I think it's reasonable for a game like CoD to have instant knife action). This is just because I think it looks so much nicer to see the knife penetrate through their skin and flesh cutting vital veins and maybe even puncturing an organ, then watching the life drain from their eyes and the horrified expression on their face drain with it .

I miss games where you switched to the knife and it stayed out like in Battlefield 2142 and Bad Company. It was funner that way. But I don't mind the knifing in Bad Company 2.

Surprisingly, Call of Duty is not meant to be completely realistic. Other departures from realism include the ideas that you can regain your health by cowering behind a barrel for 30 seconds and the idea that a squad of five men can kill four dozen hostiles in two minutes.
