While trying to fall asleep yesterday, for some reason I was thinking about this. I'm sure we all know that if a person were to be shot in the head and survive, there could/will be a dramatic change in his/her personality.

But if you were to knock your head hard against something, will it result in a slight decrease of intelligence, memory or even personality? I doubt that by injuring your head it would result in a change in personality but I deem memory being a possibility. What do you think?

Depends how hard you knock your head, I guess. You might suffer from concussion. And I doubt all those movie plots that depend on amnesia would be so common if you couldn't get amnesia from banging your head against something. Then again, who knows? Films aren't the most accurate of sources. And maybe if you lose some of your memories, you might lose aspects of your personality that were influenced by those memories. I don't really know how memory works. As for intelligence, people are always telling me that I'm losing brain cells every time I bang my head against something. (Yes, I do it intentionally, which leads me to believe that I wasn't very intelligent to begin with. No loss there.)

Well I can see why. Falling and bumping your head just means either you slipped, or your not care full. If you get shot you know your doing something wrong.

It's certainly possible. Knocking your head hard enough to be knocked unconscious does serious damage to the brain, it often recovers, but there is a high chance of losing function. It is also sort of dependent on where you're knocked, and therefore, how you damaged it. Basically a lobotomy by table corner is what I'm getting at.

small constant bumps over a significantly extended period of time would probably do the trick, but you'd have to be doing it ALL the time.

intelligance and/or memory... yes definately.

personality... thats a little tricky.... your personality is shaped throughout the years by your experiences, memories, intellect and the way your brain processess things... so yes if memory and intelligence were effected it would stand to reason that a persons personality could change...

also peoples personalities can change from traumatic situations as these can manipulate the psyche and peoples look on a certain priciple.. so it is plausable that a bad enough knock could change the personality..... but not dramatically i believe. i knock to the head to change a person to someone completly kill them would most likely result in death and the whole brain would have to be affected by the injury.

If losing intellect was a result boxers would be knuckle dragging morons. If memory was effected I am pretty sure boxers wouldn't be able to walk.

Comon boxers get smacked around by people who who always train punches, especially the heavy weights, who have serious punching power. So if there fine then you need one hell hell of a bang to cause any damage, like "your lucky to survive that" kind of bang.
