I don't care if it's browser or download-only, as long as it's free. So, escapists, do you know any great free PC games? (Regardless of genre).

You got Steam?
Alien Swarm's meant to be good. Haven't played it myself so I don't know for sure, but I've heard good things and it's free.
Not a lot to lose.

Interesting. I'll log into Steam and give it a go now :)

Alien Swarm is indeed a hoot, coming from me, who has gotten to the highest level(not hard, but it indicates I've been playing it a while).

Play it.

You've got to have a group of friends on Steam to play it with though... the online PUG's (at least in my limited experience before I gave up and uninstalled it) are downright dire.

If you ever get tired of Steam, and are looking for a good browser-based game, then you can't go wrong with the free MMO that is Runescape. I've actually left World of Warcraft after three years to go back to the MMORPG that started my interest in the genre.

Sure, you have to pay $5 a month for some of the later features and a good portion of the Member map, but if you are looking for a free game to pass the time, Runescape is a good choice.

Let's see:
Games that are free2play in the basic version with optional puchaseable parts:

Dungeons & Dragons Online (DDO)
League of Legends
Battlefield Heroes
Atlantica Online

Those are more popular games with lots of players.

Try looking for "abandonware" if you like classic(retro) games.

Well, I haven't got anything to suggest in the ways of Dungeons & Dragons or RuneScape or Alien Swarm, but I thought I'd post simply because I'm addicted to a game called Amateur Surgeon at the moment. It's kinda cartoony and silly, but it's fun, and a great time-killer. Also, the dialogue can be hilarious.

It's over at AdultSwim games if you want to check it out, but it'll pop up just with a Google search.

(Also, PACMAN :D)

Alien Swarm is great fun online, and playing Moonbase Alpha is hilarious.

I'll second Atlantica (which reminds me I need to start playing that again before I get kicked out of my guild).

La Mulana and Hurrican are two great retro games (the former based off Maze of Galius and the latter based off Turrican).

2d platforming:
Spelunky (Hard, random levels for good replay)
Cave Story (has a plot)

Multiplayer
League of Legends (DotA game with microtransactions, but if you don't pay you're not at a disadvantage at all)
Alien Swarm (Isometric co op shooter.)

Then there is an old school Point and Click Adventure type game called "Ben There, Dan That".

All of these are awesome and very free.

I have an unexplainable dislike for Runescape, and I can't imagine myself playing it now. I played it like 7 years ago or something with my friends in school. The one thing I really liked in that game though was the fishing, I spent hours on a dock on some island just fishing lobsters and whatever else, and a troll would occasionally spawn and beat down someone. In fact, I like fishing in most MMO's for some reason, even though it's usually grindtastic.

OT: I recommend Gunbound..

I haven't played it in a while but there is some crazy mobile that fires boomerang things, and some people pull off some crazy shots, but the whale with have to do because I don't remember its name.

Quake Live is worth looking into, browser based Quake 3 Arena.

FreeCiv is always good - I tried FreeCiv.net but the clicking didn't recognise properly, it might work for you.

MapleStory is MMO + 2D platformer, which is a rather unique combination.

Tribes 2 is available free from TribesNext.

www.liberatedgames.com is always worth looking into, as originally commercial games are often better than the intended to be free ones.

Look at Nexon's library of games, especially if your in NA/Austrailia, as they have some real high quality titles and also some shit ones, but try out Maplestory, Mabinogi and Combat Arms. Those 3 are also availible in the EU xD

Paticularly Jumper 1 and 2.
I wonder if 4 is done yet....

Also, Boxes is fucking awesome, but sadly, it only exists in the 2004 archives of the Game Maker Community Forums, my harddrive, my pendrive, and two of my friends' harddrives.

The latest patch added the standard server browser to the main menu (before, it was hidden away in the console, so there weren't many servers set up for it).
