'Knytt' is a very good Freeware advertised by Yahtzee on his 'Extra Punctuation' great exploration and platforming.
I have Knytt Stories, and it's a pretty sweet freeware game. It takes virtually no space and it's browser based. You can get custom maps for that game made by other people and some of them are incredibly fun and creative.

If you have Half Life 2 Episode 2, there's a great source mod named "Research and Development". Awesome physics puzzles.

EDIT: Company of Heroes Online is coming out soon. If you never heard of the game before or if you don't have it, it's a great WWII strategy game with a cover system, fully destructible environment and good gameplay. And it's going to come out for free.

Member fees were like $15 dollars last time I looked :p
...It's $6 a month. In most countries, at least, or on PayPal for $7.50 no matter where you are.

I'd suggest RuneScape as well. It's free, it's Java-based (so as long as you have a browser you should be able to play it), and if you want to, Membership adds onto the game by a factor of at least 10 if not more.

People complain about the graphics, they haven't played it in a while. They complain about the grind, they forget it's an MMO. People complain about the community, they have a valid point.

I like it because the world is so... open, especially if you get Members. The map's huge and there's so much stuff to do.

EDIT:
Also, this.
