Bungie is "independant" in terms of their no longer being owned by a parent company. They signed a contract with Activision, but it's not a company buyout. Microsoft was kind enough to let them go free after Halo 3.

As for Kotick's comment? I think we can all agree that this man was a success for Activision, but it's time for him to leave.

Beyond Halo, Bungie's most critical success was with the Marathon series. A similar setting to Halo, but more complex. Perhaps not in terms of gameplay, but definitely in terms of story.

Bungie is an excellent studio with an almost unparalleled relationship with their fanbase, but they are certainly not the finest remaining independant studio.

As for the earlier comment about Bungie being let-go because they had nothing to offer Microsoft may or may not be true. But frankly I doubt that the studio that made Marathon, Myth, and Halo will make a crappy game. Halo was a landscape altering game in 2001. Now it's more or less a series of entry-level shooters with a few good ideas that were adopted by the rest of the industry.

Regardless of everyone's personal views regarding the companies or their products, one thing is clear. No one here likes Kotick.
