Both games are incredible. Might as well start with KotOR, then go with ME and ME2 so you can appreciate the technological move forward.

To me, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic seems like a relic of the past. It's boring and also has a boring story, at least in my opinion. The beginning is boring as all fuck and Star Wars itself is a boring universe. It probably picks up after getting off that horrible Sith starting planet but I can't be bothered to complete all the quests there to find out.

Mass Effect on the other hand has a modern story, well fleshed out and interesting characters, a decent combat system(2nd basically taught third person shooters a lesson if you ask me), a very interesting story with an extremely interesting backstory. All in all, Mass Effect is the better space opera here, at least in my opinion. I might be wrong as, like I've said before, I've never fully played KOTOR.

Play KOTOR first because it's harder to go back once you've played Mass Effect. Believe me, I recently replayed KOTOR2 and it was a real chore to get through, despite the fact I used to love it. That said I enjoyed the original KOTOR much more; but Mass Effect will spoil you.

here are my funny equations:
Mass Effect D&D < Lord of the Rings ,,
Spectres + Light Sabers + Force = Jedis.
...
So you pretty much get the same atmosphere in both games.

Characters are interesting in both games. ME1's story is a little too long and is full of small tedious parts, just like KOTOR1's. You'll also get the same feeling of epicness after completing both games.
Mass Effect is more or less everything KOTOR is, except it's more action-focused and prettier.
I'd say play Mass Effect and fuck KOTOR, because you'll probably get bored after playing the two, no matter which order.

KotOR because it, in my humble opinion, had the supperior story without being to bogged down with text and it linearity allowed for intense concentration on the matter at hand.

I would probably go KotOR first. Assuming that you mean to play both eventually, it's a bit easier to go from an older, less great looking game to a newer, good looking game than it is to go vice versa.
