I'm curious what people think of LA Noire?

I'm not quite finished yet, but very close. I think it's a good game, something a little different and enjoyable. I thought they did a fairly good job tying in all the cases at each desk and then resolving it at the end, and I don't really mind that basically between the different case desks there's not much of an overarching story. It's still fun doing each mini story. I also liked the newspapers giving a little sub story that you get involved in later, and I liked the wartime videos to give some character development of Phelps and Kelso.

The problem I have is that later in the game there's a big plot event.
When Phelps cheats on his wife with Elsa.

You hear that Phelps has a wife and kids a total of twice in the entire game leading up to that, and only in passing. Who are these people? We never see Phelps hug his wife or children, have a meal, share a laugh. Why should I care about them?

And they give some very small hints that he might have some sort of infatuation with Elsa, but only barely. Suddenly you drive to her place and stay the night?! That was completely out of nowhere

I don't think that whole plot point was bad, but I think it was badly done. It would have been much more meaningful and added to the game, I think, if they had initially developed a little more of Phelp's home life during the Traffic and Homicide cases. Just little things - like parts of Mafia 2. Driving home and seeing the family. Leaving the house in the morning and hugging the kids goodbye. Later in Homicide maybe show Phelps being distant - too busy with work or whatever. Tension in the marriage. It would have leant so much more credibility to the this big turning point.

Anyway, that basically sums up what I thought of it. I like it, it's fun, it's a bit different. Yahtzee covers the gameplay stuff that is a bit... repetitive or silly at times, but overall I think it's a good game. It's really nice to play with my girlfriend as well, which is rare (she's not much of a gamer).

So what do you guys think of it? Am I right? Does it not matter?

I actually agree with you, It came completely out of nowhere and felt really cheap.
It makes me wonder if this happened due to running out of time. It seems like there's a few things at the end here that just make me go "WTF!?"... also, the end of the Homicide desk... what was that about? It's like "holy shit we got him!" Oh.. yeah.. nevermind. Now forget about it and move on.

I think that was a reference to the actual Black Dahlia murders never being solved, or maybe thats just me

I think you're right. The Dahlia murders were never solved but that makes for a cruddy ending to the cases leading up to it so you get the "Good job, but you can never speak of this again" ending.

Hi

I thought it was a brilliant game overall, because it works differently from a lot of games I d played before,

it was refreshing in that sense, and I love the LA noire atmosphere they built into the game,

The twist with Elsa was sort of forseeable though it was a nice twist which I thought totally worked with the whole setting

This game felt lke walking a chacacter through an Ellroy novel, with all of the slow paced uncontrolled event shappening around you without your being able to do much about them

I must admit though I'd never play it mor than once, and would never go trophy hunting on this one

Just my two cents :)
