I'm just waiting to see what the Zords look like and how the trailer looks before I give my opinion.

My gripe is that these look like Bad Guy suits instead of Good Guy suits. That's the vibe I'm getting from them.

I will grant that if there's a decent backstory for why they look that way, I'd be okay with that, too. If these are some kind of reverse-engineered prototypes using technology that's not fully understood, that's fine. Then it makes sense for them to look kind of slapdash and patched together; the suits are works in progress and may yet be pulled apart for improvements.

But the suits in the past have nearly always been the capstone products of advanced alien beings, magic forces, or the embodiments of mystical concepts. Naturally, this lead to a very clean, simple aesthetic than demonstrates their highly refined state. If they're going to break from that, all I ask is that they throw me a bone!

Is it me, or do the Pink and Yellow one have high heels?
Also, can't say why, but the helmets don't really mesh well with rest of the suits.
Yes. Upon closer inspection the Yellow and Pink rangers are, in fact, wearing heels. Somehow the costumes got a little worse. But hey, at least they ditched the skirt! Half a step forward two steps back.
The female actors are quite short compared to the men, they may of added that for some extra height.

OT: Honestly i like them, it's clear this a CGI photo and not actual people wearing suits/armour. I'll judge this more when we get a trailer and see them morphing and moving. I would also like top point out that this film is a year away. Anything could change by then.

MMPR is cheesy, sure, but I don't think that oblgies the movie to follow suit.
Sure, they're ion no way obliged, but there's a level of inertia when you try and make something as naturally silly as MMPR into something else. This isn't to say they can't, or even that they can't do a good job, but the odds are pretty long against it.

I know. I just wanted to make an April Fools crack. >.>

Or a fossil?

I don't get a bad guy vibe from the, though. Unless Michael Bay counts as a bad guy these days. If anything, they strike me as very insect-like, which classes with the Dinozord aesthetic and the helmets. Even then, it's mostly that I find the suits ugly. Like, fair enough that you think they make decent villain suits, but they don't even do that for me.

This isn't to say they can't alter the look or that it will displease me if they did. The Super Sentai footage used for MMPR was already dated in the 90s, with sort of a 70s vibe to it. Even a lot of the other sentai suits look cooler, and they're still largely spandex. And I imagine a large part of that comes down to mobility, since one of the big complaints from the 90s MMPR movie was that those suits were heavy and hard to move around in.

Still, I mean, we've seen examples of costumes being updated a lot of late, and they don't necessarily suck. Spider-Man's seen several suits, all of which are pretty cool. Black Panther looks awesome, and I even think Daredevil looks pretty sweet. So it's not like I'm against changing it, either.

I just find these ugly. Alien is fine, different is fine, but these suits just...I can't even explain why these ones strike me as ugly, but they do.

Geezus, that boob armor. I mean, it's really close to like... vacuum tight, innit? Overcompensating for the original yellow ranger being played by a guy in the suit?
Teeeechnically, the Pink Ranger's suit actor was a guy, too.
It's just that the acot was a stand-in for a woman in Japan, whereas Trini's was not.
Ahh. Didn't know about pink ranger. Weird.

I mean, I don't mind looking at them, but they seem a bit much?
Ironically, it'll probably be easier to defeat them with a punch to the chest than Zed's putties.
I don't know,

A lot of the suit actors for the women were men. There's a rumour, not sure if it's true, that this is why the female characters wear skirts: to help disguise their genitals. Not sure if this is true, like I said, but it's an amusing thought.

I don't know,
Owowowowowowowowowowowowowow....

I was referencing the whole season two Lord Zedd putties thing where you had to hit them in the chest, and more the way boob armour would probably lead to being impaled by your own sternum, but owowowowowowowowowow....

Not a big fan but I'll wait until I see them in action before I judge. My bigger issue is that they just went with a Mighty Morphin reboot as they always do, instead of drawing from other seasons or making up their own for the movie.

Makes sense I guess. Kind of a shame, though, since there's pretty amazing women that could probably handle such roles.

... Ooooooohhh, I see. I forgot about that until you mentioned it.
Eh, I'm sure the armor is probably like soft kevlar or something in nature. Doubt it'll lead to that sort of mishap with the impalement. It'd probably be a blessing to get impaled vs boob slapped.

Yeah, I'm not exactly sure why this is a thing. I am just aware it is.

Things may also have changed. I'm aware a few of the PR seasons, and thus the stock Super Sentai footage, have had skirtless female rangers. And they're either women, doing a remarkable job tucking, or both.

The thought came to mind in part because people in other comments sections had brought up the "realism" of boob plate,. as in hard metal armour. The problem being that it makes the sternum a focal point.

Kevlar might actually make things worse on the boob punch front, because it tends to distribute the force better. The result is that it saves your life, but you can end up with bruises that are like, a third of your torso. That means you don't even need to get hit in the breast to feel it there.

...maybe the sternum impalation IS the better end result.

So the Power Rangers raided Tony Stark's basement?

Was anyone really expecting the costumes to look good? Aside from the whole 'gritty hollywood re-imagining' thing, the Power Rangers costumes have always looked goofy as fuck.
Goofy is good but goofy whilst pretending to be serious will just be insufferable. Definitely worried that this is going to have all the fun and silliness sucked out of it. These costumes seem like they'd be very difficult to go crazy acrobatics in. Power Rangers is the most ridiculous thing to make a gritty "realistic" version of.

I don't understand why modern films think that super-advanced or even magical costumes that are skintight and allow free movement are somehow too implausible and they have to put everyone in body armour.

Does anyone know if we're getting a black guy as the black ranger and an asian women as the yellow ranger... I assumed they have enough self-awareness to avoid doing that but then I saw these costumes.
