Considering how I like to play characters, rather than just play the game, it's happened. Surprisingly, not very often. And I play each gender roughly equally.

But, given the accounts here, it (Getting hit on over the interweb) still happens. Often. Either my S.P.E.C.I.A.L. Perception score of 2 is getting the better of me, or I don't play the right games.

I'm male, by the way. Maybe I should have said that closer to the top?

The weird thing is, I even played WoW for a little bit there. And the only thing that happened was when I joined a Guild, the leader jokingly said something about it. I actually thought that getting hit on over the 'web didn't happen anymore. Mostly because I thought there were a lot of women that play games now, thanks to how accessible games are, these days, amongst other things. I also know that there are still more guys than girls, and a lot of the "women" are also guys, but still. That (There being a lot more women that play games) rings at least partially true.

Happened a little bit on EverQuest. Though for the first few years I didn't have voice chat, so people only knew I was a girl if I told them. And since generally I was playing along with my boyfriend, if they knew I was a girl, they also knew I was spoken for.

Once I started using Ventrillo, it was immediately obvious I wasn't a bloke. I had a few comments from people surprised that the raid leader was a woman, but beyond that I guess I was lucky. I got a few cheeky comments about my plummy English accent, but beyond that I got off fairly lightly.

Made some good friends though through playing, and had a blast. Whilst there's a few creeps out there, most of the guys playing were decent blokes having a laugh.

I tried being a girl in a MMO once. You know, girly name, female toon. It was awesome. Gotso much free stuff in such a short amount of time!

Seriously, to all the women in the audience, take advantage of it. If a guy is stupid enough to offer up his shoes at the hint you have IRL boobs, the idiot doesn't deserve to have shoes.

Unless I open my mouth, most of the people assume I'm a guy. I'm okay with that, as I have had a number of guys hit on me once they hear me speak (I can't help it; I swear and shout when I game). I usually just lie and say I'm taken if guys start to try to start something with me, though. I mean, dating a gamer would be awesome, but I'm the kind of girl who likes to get to know someone before trying to start a relationship. Call me old-fashioned.

I actually stopped playing online because of it. Note I'm a guy - I got annoyed because I would play NWN online, have some fun, then suddenly find that everyone is dropping absolutely EVERYTHING because a female char comes on the server. Whats that? You're half dead and need help to get back safely? Well screw yourself because someone playing this game just happened to tick the "female character" option.

The worse part was that 9/10th's of these people were guys just playing female chars. In fact, some were openly admitted guys playing female chars and this shit still happened. I actually did a test once were I made an ambigious account name and made a female char - people were literially getting killed over me (and I do mean that literially. Characters were rushing out in front of bigger monsters they wouldn't handle in their wildest dreams just on the off-chance to impress me, guys were having their characters duel each other etc). I took some Screen-Shots, showed some of the worse offenders their desperation and hypocracy and then rage-quit forever.

I don't think it helped that some of the female chas (including those female IRL) where sometimes encouraging this crap. Particularly frustrating when a girl I know RL actually got stalked by one of these weirdos despite never even hinting she was interested.

I now no longer play NWN online and generally only play online at all with friends.

Wow, yeah, seen this happen a few times.

Once I was told to stand in as a "boyfriend" when every kid on the game was hitting on this girl. Cue mayhem. And mental kiddies.

Hitting on someone over the internets is just...

Well I'll call it creepy and hold onto that point forever.
No matter what your gender is, you are still trying to romance someone who you do not meet physicaly. And even though that this is fine when making friends, it's a bit difficult while trying to have a relationship.

And I'm not talking only about sex even though that's a large part of that.

While I a guy and this thread isn't aimed at me, I can honestly say I've never persued women online. Not in my WoW days, not in my WAR days, not in any of the other MMOs I played, not in LoL or other online games. Even for people I was 100% sure were actual females, I never went there. I come there to game, not to hit on girls. That being said, if I met a girl while gaming and we hit it off (and if my current girlfriend was abducted by aliens), I might see myself persuing someone online. But just flat out trying to pick up chicks while gaming? No way.

meh im a bloke and while i do admit im more likely to chat to a random lady online than a random lad its more because alot of my fellow sex take the game too seriously (e.g tf2 I always do what your supposed to do: have fun so I experiment with the classes loadouts etc. for some reason this pisses off people of my gender. how ever lasses dont or get much less peeved at this in general. heck once some even joined in when I gliched out the map as an engy and built a outpost in a useless spot (total people who chilled in my "break room" 2 lads (me included) 4 lasses (team speak was on and EVERYONE had mics, fun times))) so I dontflirt i just speak casualy, still it is funny to watch a bunch of lads hit on a girl and expect to be taken seriously from the word go

I get it often, but only because I take advantage of my own gender in MMO's with attractive avatars in order to get free stuff from them/powerleveling that I wouldn't get otherwise on a male avatar. And why yes, I am a manipulative bastard in online games! How did you know!?

Although otherwise, I use Ventrilo for most of my MMO playtime, so everyone on there knows I am a guy. And I openly admit the above, no less. As for flirting with people online, however, I usually only do it when the other person gives me the pretenses that they enjoy it as much as I do as well. Have had two people online give me that scenario in the past two years, one of them I still play the game with, the other got pregnant and moved in with the bloke (sigh).

I don't get many encounters with genuine female peers that enjoy video gaming as much as I do where I live, so I enjoy the occasional "promising" chatting with that certain individual when the scenario arises.

I don't tend to have that too often.
Partly because I am mistaken for a boy a lot.
Online and in real life...
I also tend to be protective of images of myself. That tends to help.

Someone I thought was a girl decided to hit on me once. Because she thought I was a boy. Turned out they were male after all and did this "for fun".

I was thinking more of desktops, laptops can be moved around, even though I think it's weird to store your PC in the kitchen. Also, havent you ever heard of the "Women back to the kitchen" jokes?

It's the reason why I don't play Modern Warfare 2 online... .-. It happen's alot and I'm used to it by now, but it still annoys the fuck outta me and I hate it >_<

Now, if it's non-creepy hitting on me, I tell them that's sweet but I'm not interested. It helps.

Nope, but I only play with my (female) friends. If I were in a situation where there was a risk of being hit on, I just wouldn't use a headset and would go for a male avatar and gender-neutral name (much like this one). I don't deal well with being flirted with, and especially online I'd rather avoid that possibility entirely.

On the other hand, my dad always plays using female avatars, and I've seen guys hit on him. Hah.

I'm not exactly a geeky boy but just a casual gamer, but for some strange reason people think I'm a girl because of my name. Personally, I don't get it. But it does bring quite a few lulz with it when I play along and then tell them I'm a dude. :D

Well, I try not to scream, "LOOK AT ME GUIZ IMMA GAMER GURRRRLLL!!1!1" like a lot of gals I've seen. That, and because I'm not as attractive as Lisa Foiles, say, so very rarely.

Apart from the, "You're so hot!" *turns away to another girl* "You're so hot!" *turns to another girl* "Mmm, smokin'!" sort of guys.
