I had a virus that stopped me using my mouse and keyboard. So I couldn't log in, or reach safe mode.
But I am SUCH A PRO I removed it, without killing any of my own files.

Well, I can't tell much, cause I don't know what happened.
It's killed MS Security Center, and my old AVG has disappeared.
I'm running Vista (I know, that's part of the problem.) on Safe Mode.
The virus seems to keep running a program called "U1", and it takes up all my CPU.
Since I'm in Safe Mode, I can no longer run Task Manager, so I've lost my only way to see what it's doing.
I'm re-installing AVG, but I need something more effective.
Any help is lovely.
Operating system reinstallation is a good way to get things running smoothly again, you just need patience. I did it recently just to unclog my PC.

If you can access the internet on the computer try downloading Ms security essentials it actually is pretty good at getting rid of shit and free for now.

As it's late and fixing a problem like that takes a considerable amount of time and mental torture, format, start again, learn from your mistake.

Or install Kaspersky.

Combofix doesn't work on vista. Reformatting is the easiest fix. If you don't want to reformat, you will spend a LOT of time fixing it, with no assurance that you got all of the bad stuff. Try HijackThis and remove everything. Run Spybot S&D and Microsoft Malicious software removal tool, IF the bad stuff is now gone, you may have to run Taskmanagerfix.exe and lspfix to fix your taskmanager and internet connection. Then re-install the good programs that HijackThis removed. Good luck!

If you know the location of the file, download file assassin and you can remove it with no problem thats the manual way of doing it.

Dunno if it'll be of any use to you but when my laptop got a virus I went into the bios and rolled it back to the last update which thankfully was only a few days previous. Everything was fine after that and there was no sign of the virus ever again.

...I might reword that last bit, it reads too much like a fairy tail.

Vista has nothing to do with it. I've run Vista for one and a half years, and I'm constantly on my laptop. It still works just as well as the day I got it.

But anyway, I'd recommend a different anti-virus. In all that time I've used Norton 360 and it works brilliantly, so if I was you I'd try that. For now though, do a full System Restore and see if that helps. Worst case scenario you'll need to take it somewhere like PC World (or non-UK equivalent) and get them to restore it to the factory settings, which means you'll lose every file that wasn't on there when you bought the computer. However, that's only in a worst case, final resort, scenario. As I say, just get a better anti-virus and do a system restore for now and hopefully that will sort everything out. Good luck anyway :)

Well... It's gonna get worse before it gets better. Soon, very soon, it will make all the paint peel off your walls. It'll make your keyboard all sticky. Give your poodle a hickey and invest your cash in stock in Euro Disney. Then it will tie up your phone making prank long distance calls. It'll set your clocks back an hour and start hogging the shower. Decide to give you a permanent wedgie. Legally change your name to Reggie. Even mess up the pH balance in your pool.

Kudos to whoever gets the reference. But seriously... I think you're gonna have to reformat your PC. Looks like you're out of options really.

Fuck, fine, I'm gonna find the Vista disks.
In the mean time, any way to prevent the virus hopping onto a flash drive, cause I wanna salvage my shit.
What you want is a Linux Distribution called KNOPPIX. It's a Linux Distro that boots from a CD. You can download the ISO and burn it to a CD on another computer. Boot using the CD (you can change boot order in your BIOS), and back up your files.

http://www.shockfamily.net/cedric/knoppix/

Here's a good website.

Alright people, I used System Restore, went back a couple days, looking good.
Slower than shit cause of the AVG and SpyBot and such, but it works, so fuck it.
Thanks again, people!
