archos is coming out with a 10" android tablet this month, $300. that should do everything your dad would need. the screen is a good size, everything is customizable and theres a good selection of apps. http://www.archos.com/products/ta/archos_101it/index.html?country=us&lang=en
Asus has their T101MT "netvertible", netbook that flips into a tablet. It's pretty cheap and an upgrade to 2 GB ram is cheap as well if you get the 1GB US version. I have thought about getting that particular one if I ever need a netbook just because it's cool, cheap and because Asus has a good reputation when talking build quality. Not really impressive spec-vise but reviews have been generally favourable.
