It's not impossible to game with a laptop, but really I wouldn't. You saccrifice so much for the convenience of having a portable computer.
1. They're more expensive than desktops.
2. They're not as powerful as desktops.
3. They're not as repairable as desktops.
4. They're not as upgradable as desktops.
5. They tend to have heating issues, especially when gaming, which can shorten the life of a laptop.
Those disadvantages aside, its not impossible to game on a laptop. In fact there are specific "gaming laptops" like the alienware Area 51 or the Dell XPS which are buildt with the gamer in mind. However, they are a good deal more expensive than an equally powerful desktop, they also have a much shorter shelf life.
The question you need to ask yourself is why are you really getting a laptop over a desktop? Is portability really that important to you? I tell you what, when I first got to college i bought a laptop with the hope that I could game on it. I made sure it was capable of running halflife 2 and world of warcraft (as those were the only two games I cared about at the time) and I was happy... for about 2 years. The machine really didn't age well, and since its a laptop there's virtually no hope of upgrade.
If I had to pick between a new gaming desktop and a new laptop, being the gamer that I am, I would pick the desktop.
