Fellow escapees! I have a question that has been bugging me for sometime now; What is the largest video game franchise by number of games in the series? This is sequels, spin off and the like, please help!

I think it's either Final Fantasy or Dragon ball

Surely it's got to be the Mario franchise? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Mario_video_games

Admittedly not all of these are Mario games, but still.

Define Largest, because if its number of sequels. Madden followed by FIFA.

If its for units sold, FIFA followed by MAdden

Street Fighter [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Street_Fighter_games] has quite an impressive library too, if you count all the different versions of each game that is.

I recall Megaman being hailed as the largest series at one point, albeit I think it has more to do with number of release titles than the variety of the games.

I think they'd count, too. After all, the Mario Franchise includes the other characters connected to "his" universe, so Wario, Donkey Kong and others, even if Mario isn't explicitely in their games, are still part of the franchise.

[edit]I just realised, going over the list again, that you were probably referring to those games where Mario is included as a kind of easter egg rather that a story character. Still, even without those games, it's a pretty impressive list.

If anything, Mario should be considered part of the Donkey Kong franchise :p

But yeah, I agree that it's probably Mario, through a combination of life span, number of games and overall sales.

What about Pokémon? In sheer number they may not be as numerous as Mario, but the main series itself is still going strong even now over 10 years later, and then there's the spin-offs, the merchandise, manga, television series, theatrical films, and an ice show. As a franchise that originated from a videogame, it's pretty big.

Yeah there's about 6 million different versions of SF2. I think it is Mario though. There's more Mario games than grains of sand.
