I sat down and watched The Hitcher last night and it was immense. Really creepy and dark without being too obvious. Rutger Hauer's John Ryder is without a doubt one of the best bad guys ever in terms of sheer unpleasantness.

Thing is, I was expecting a stupid slasher flick from the 80s that was a bit above average and that's what I was in the mood to watch.

So what I'm asking is when was the last time you sat down to watch a film that you didn't have a lot of hope for that turned out to be great.

I would have to go with death sentence...like with Hitcher i was expecting just a brutal bath of blood but it turned out to be one of the most emotionally wrenching movies...Bacon did such a good job and the whole movie was just really well done...it almost made me want to cry...which hasn't happened since Schindler's List...

Pan's Labrynth really suprised me. I read nothing about the film before watching it, and the blend of fantasy and the tragedy of civil war was really suprising. Great film :)
Also, Dancer in the Dark suprised me because Bjork's performance in it was simply stunning.

Don't go much to the movies, so I'll have to be obvious and say The Dark Knight.

Step Brothers. I had absolutely no expectations for it, and only went to see it because my friend got free movie tickets. Surprisingly funny, and some pretty good one-liners.

Yea that's what I was going to say. One of the best action films out there because it doesn't take itself seriously and does some very cool stuff.

One of my favourites. Now watch the sequel and weep.

I actually watched the sequel first and hated it so much I felt a duty to watch the original.

Last movie that surprised me... hm...

I was surprised at how genuinely creepy The Grudge was, and that was probably the most recent.

My thoughts exactly. Considering it had very little dialogue, it was immensely interesting and enjoyable to watch.

Yeah, DK was quite awesome, despite the fact that it was hyped so much

Talk about intense- Pan's Labyrinth was just crazy- in good, tragic and noble sort of way
The ending was killer, too

I love Wall-E..... He's like R2-D2, except not as mentally debilitated, and just as adorable.

That movie had a really great message, too....

REC.

Great film that actually had me creaped out which rarely happens. It's in Spanish and they're making an English remake called Quarantine. No doubt in my mind though that it won't even come close to the original.

Casino Royale I thought it was great for a bond flick(no stupid technology or horrible villian just a good movie overall). That and maybe the Bourne ultimatum I thought it was great for being #3 in a trilogy

EDIT: Also agree with the poster below me The prestige was amazing, if you liked that you also might like the illusionist

The Prestige, with Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Cane (both were in the Dark Knight, for you addicts) and Scarlett Johansson.

It's been out since 2006 and I haven't seen a better movie since.
The story is about two rivaling magicians in the 1890's.
Sounds a bit stupid, I know, but do check it out and you'll be pleasantly surprised.
