So I've been hearing really mixed things about The Last Guardian. Some people say the game is a work of art but others warn about horrible technical issues. I'd be playing on the original PS4, so how bad should I expect frame rates and studdering to be? Also, how bad are the camera and controls? I love good story and I like the team ico games, but if the story is the only really good thing about this game, I have to wonder why I would pay for it, rather than just watch someone's playthrough.

Because like with Team Ico's previous games the story really is in the gameplay.

OT: The controls are very loose and floppy, and the camera feels like it's attached to you by a bungee cord. It's very hard to fall off anything though, unless you straight-up miss a jump; The kid will stop in his tracks when he runs up to a ledge, and he auto-grabs everything within reach.

The framerate is a bit crap in outdoor areas, but it's not as choppy as in Until Dawn, or the Batman: Arkham Asylum remaster.

If you didn't mind the issues in Ico and SotC you'll likely won't mind them in The Last Guardian.

The framerate is decent enough for the vast majority of the game. Expect some stuttering at times adjusting the camera outside and on the occasional Trico jumps. The camera is fine for the most part, the camera isn't very good at times in small indoor areas, you can use L1 to refocus the camera on Trico. The main thing with the camera is that it has a lag to it so when you press say left to move the camera left, it takes about half a second for the camera to move. I've gotten pretty used to it and can adjust the camera pretty well without over-adjusting anymore. I think the controls are pretty good. This is real platforming and you just don't hit jump for a canned animation to play show you making the jump, you have to make the jumps and more games need to bring real platforming back. The boy has weight to him, he'll stumble a bit after jumps even just across a flat surface. This is a puzzle platformer so you don't need super responsive controls, you don't need to dodge an attack instantaneously or cancel animations and it's not like a Prince of Persia with moving saws that need to be dodged. I have yet to die because of a controls issue. You definitely need to play the game to get the experience as it's mainly a puzzle game, that's like saying you can just watch someone play a Portal game and get the experience. The bond you feel with Trico is also done through gameplay.

I had a couple of points where the framerate dropped to the point that it reminded me of Blighttown. The controls are from the PS2 era and the camera too (which is unfortunate for a game like this). If you have the patience and tolerance, you may find good enjoyment in the story, the puzzles and the visuals.

It's a great game, but it's also a Team Ico game.

So...yeah...bugs and weird shit galore.

Though, thankfully, I've run into fewer issues than many folks I know on the camera side.
