I mean the show has been funny every season, IMO. It's not like a show can be ONLY funny or ONLY dramatic. The Blood Gulch crew always throw around jokes.
That's true. It's why season 6 is my favorite, because I feel it does the best job of balancing out drama with humour.
Seasons 9 and 10 just tanked for me however. The problems began in seasons 7 and 8, but I could live with them. With Freelancer however, for me, the humour was gone entirely, replaced with action and 'drama.' That would be fine, if I could be invested in either. When your action scenes consist of over the top stunts that are bereft of any tension for the protagonists, I don't feel invested, I feel bored. It's also tonally jarring in a series that's had action and "badasses" (e.g. Tex), but even Tex was the best soldier around by being set against an incredibly low bar, the joke being that she still gets knocked out easily by the alien, and the Reds still capture her in the first section. In Freelancer, she and every other Freelancer (well, least the female ones) become invincible.
