Screw runes. They only complicate the game and make it harder to choose Champions you actually want to play. Their bonuses to your Champion choices are only minimal at best. Sometimes I want to play Casseopeia. Other times I'll play as Anivia, Tristana, or Pantheon.

Having to switch and manage rune pages is the very kind of micro-managing that I despise.
You only really need two runepages, and you should only get them after level 20. You get one for AP champs, and one for AP. My AP page gives me 21 AP at level 1, without any AP items. How often have you had an enemy run away with 15 hp?

AP Quints
Mpen reds
Armor yellows
Magic resist blues

Health quints
Armor penetration red
Armor yellows
Magic resist blues

There's all kinds of game-play tips that are nice, but there is a great beginners section on the LoL site. Also, solomid.net is the best site for guides. There are guides of all kinds and you can see how popular and how recent they are. Many of the featured guides are done by some of the best players. Also, watching feeds from good players can be very educational, but the thing is, your games won't look anything like theirs for a while (or possibly ever).

The biggest thing I wish I was told when I first started playing, however is this: Don't waste all your IP early on, and don't buy runes until after level 20.

At level 20 you start being able to use the tier 3 (top runes). Buying runes before that is a waste as they aren't near as good as the tier 3 ones.

It is tempting to buy a champ every time you have enough IP to do so, but the truth is, runes can be expensive and you will want to be able to buy a bunch at level 20. They really do make a big difference. Without them, once you approach level 30 you'll get stomped in lane and may not realize why. So, save your IP as much as possible until you hit level 20. Experiment with free champs and probably only buy 1 or 2 unless you're willing to spend money to buy RP and get them that way.

Also, if you do start buying RP, do as someone said and buy the hero bundles. They are super cheap for how many heroes you get, and they give you a lot of the real popular ones and a bunch of variety.

Also, there is a LoL user group here on the escapist. We chat a bunch about LoL and sometimes newer players ask questions. I did a bunch when I was new to the game. There are some players who know their stuff in there.

http://leaguecraft.com/ is good for strategy guides and champion information, look for the guides with the most upvotes. Above all, play with friends or in random pickups to learn how you like to play and what champions you like to play. Find your style, then choose your champions and how you play them around that basis.

PS: Shen is a great tank and has good map control, his passive will give him decent burst dmg with a high enough HP and Sheen/Trinity, but really your goal should be CC with your taunt and tanking dmg. Not -everyone- has to do tons of dmg.

Or, on lower levels, you can play AP Mordekaiser and dominate.
HUEHUEHUE
(Not recommended since he was nerfed to shit, but I still got nearly 100% wins on my new EU West account)

that is such a shit joke, why on earth did i laugh so much though? lol, seriously i really laughed
Lol me too. It's "the obvious joke", but it's set up so stupidly simple that it's a laugher.

Anyway, good advice, watch the champion spotlights (to/,) get to know champions, MASTER the champion, build map awareness (call missing, blink when you spot a ganking attempt, etc.).

The next step is to master your build, and learning how to adapt your build to counter the enemy team effectively. An enemy team where 2 carries are magic-based >> build magic resist. etc.

A lot of great tips here, but one I haven't seen that was a long process for me is to learn when to not simply take harassment on the chin. All to often your opponent will harass you with 1-2 skills and the tendency is to want to run away from that, but this will only put you that much further behind them in terms of health. Sometimes it's better to stand your ground and smack them back.

shens a good tank is he? I thought he was just the guy who showed up to rape you out of nowhere.....
Most of Shen's skills revolve around high survivability.
-His passive, Ki Strike, scales with your *BONUS* HP (HP granted by items).
-Taunt draws aggro to you, and in a team fight, that means a ton of auto-attack damage headed your way. Items like Mercury's Treads, Warmog's, Frozen Mallet, Thornmail, etc are all incredibly good on Shen. I cannot understate the usefulness of Taunts, as they effectively work like snares and silences all in one go.
-Feint is a very strong dedicated shield effect.
-Stand United is designed to let you save teammates from anywhere, and close ganks.
Teleporting in and Taunting enemies to you works best if you're a tank. This also lets you join teamfights from anywhere on the map.

Ok, let's break it down.

1. Play the tutorial. Then play Coop games against Easy AI. Then play Coop games against Intermediate AI. This should adequately teach you the basics of the game and how it proceeds. Intermediate bots are more cmpetent than quite a few human players I've seen, so there's that.

2. DO NOT DIE! This is your first priority. This is the basic lesson you should learn. Focus on it. Focus on not getting killed. Everything comes from that.

3. Not losing is more important than winning. Or in other words - avoid risks if you want to win. I can't stress this enough. Play safe, play carefully, avoid suicide runs, focus on not losing your lane instead of constantly trying for kills. Don't be totally passive, but don't go chasing people under their towers at level 2 because you just HAVE to get that kill. And if you're being pushed back don't try to kill soe minions while at 2 HP, losing those few minions will hurt you less than getting killed.

4. Win your lane (or at least don't lose it). That's your job early on. Park your arse in your lane and make sure you get more money than the other team. Try to kill the tower if you can, but don't get killed trying.

5. Learn to last hit. You may have noticed that only the last hit on a minion gives you money. This is called lasthitting and it's a crucial skill to acquire. Might seem small, but 20ish minions is worth one kill. That shit adds up. Also, constantly autoattacking your lane pushes it towards the enemy tower which in turn means it's easier for their teammates to come in from the river and kill you from behind. There is a time and place to push, but not all the time.

6. Don't worry about builds too much. Follow the reccomended builds at first until you get comfortable with the various items. The default builds for most champions are pretty solid. In time you'll see what you need (more damage? more health? etc.).

7. For advanced training, watch streams. Go to Own3d.tv or Twitch.tv and find a popular livestream. Just watch and you'll learn tons. Some streamers are better, some worse for this, but you can see a ton of advanced strategies and subtle things, like how to use wards, how to control the minion line, when to push, when to hug your tower, when to harass, when to be passive, etc.

Most important is experience, though. Pay attention to other players, especially the ones who are doing well. Don't get pissed when you lose, but try to see why you lost. What did they do that won them the game. If someone on your team is doing great, try to see what he is doing. It doesn't matter if he's using a champion you don't play, a lot of the general behaviour can be applied to any champion.

And finally, have fun, that's what really counts! :)

This is a great response. I've linked my friends to this thread to have a look. My mate that I usually lane with plays Tristana. We can really gank well since I usually take exhaust and ignite spells, he has that rocket jump stun and I also have my feast ability to lay down the pain fast without letting them go anywhere.

My other buddy usually takes mid and either plays this free to play normal llooking dude with a gun or an angel he bought named Kael I think.

Quick question I haven't been able to find out. Is there hot keys for items? It can usually be too late when I go for the health potion mid fight.

I'd say just learn your own style as you go and try ever champ whenever they are free to see who works well for you. Especially different roles - if you pigeonhole yourself as an AP player then you often end up fucking the team over by refusing to go ad or tank when its needed etc.

Also not using the builds pro team websites give every map as well. It's important to build for your situation - you aren't always best with the same build over and over.

I bought chogath the bug man who eats people and I quite like him so far. Though I worry he will be a target in pvp due to people not wanting him to get his stacks. I'm thinking I will also save up and buy xelrath the Mage ascendant. Since he's f2p right now and I like him.
For cho really just build a rod of ages early then going full tank, based on the situation is often good since that one item gets him all the damage he will need with his durability. Other than that just get practice with his rupture and build feast stacks when you can, but still make sure feast is off cooldown for ganks/teamfights (that true damage is invaluable)

I'd also recommend not going for 6300 IP champs till later on as again you are restricted what role you can go and there a lot of much cheaper champs that perform the expensive champs roles well also, sometimes even better.

there needs to be more off-tanks and assassin/carry players. there aren't enough of those.

Also Tanks and Support are useless NEVER play them. EVER.

Cho is a good character, your on the right path. But always try new characters, you may find that someone does something better for you than another.

Always play against the bots your first time using a new character also.

MObafire is a big key to success also, finding builds that work for you is the biggest step needed in that game.

There are very few tips that can be taught. Most of the things come from experience.
However if you want a solid piece of advice, learn how to last hit creeps. It can make all the difference in the world whether you're farmed or not.
